BREAKING: In a huge blow to the NRA, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled that there is no right to carry firearms — either openly or concealed in public.

This is much-needed good news following recent high-profile gun massacres in Atlanta and Boulder.

🧵Thread
We at @bradybuzz were proud to submit an amicus in this case. Its 9th Circuit ruling dismisses the NRA's "more guns everywhere agenda."

It rejects the NRA's dangerous argument that the Second Amendment entitles virtually 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 to carry guns virtually 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚.
This we know: The majority of Americans — including gun owners — support common-sense gun reform measures.

More than 90% of Americans want sensible gun laws.

We understand that the Second Amendment does not mean unfettered access to guns beyond reason. npr.org/2019/10/20/771…
The NRA insists that the Second Amendment is unlimited. Why?

Because it helps them get rich by selling more guns.

The unfortunate truth is that today's NRA represents the gun industry, not gun owners. krisbrownbrady.medium.com/fat-cat-lobbyi…
But the 9th Circuit Court did their homework.

The opinion reads: "Our review of 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝟕𝟎𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬
of English and American legal history reveals a strong theme: government has the power to regulate arms in the public square." lawandcrime.com/second-amendme…
"[This] confirms that we have 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 assumed that individuals have an unfettered right to carry weapons in public spaces.

"Indeed, we can find 𝙣𝙤 𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 to carry arms into the public square for self-defense." latimes.com/california/sto…
The NRA is already spiraling.

They know a reasonable interpretation of the 2nd Amendment — as the 9th Circuit delivered today — is bad for their bottom line.

They know it will hurt the budget they set for Wayne LaPierre's yacht trips and luxury suits.
But Wayne LaPierre gaffes aside (and there are many), in all seriousness, I cannot underscore enough the importance of today's 9th Circuit ruling.

It reminds us: One of the most effective ways we reduce gun violence is through our nation’s courts. #EndGunViolence #EnoughIsEnough
Even when Congress is gridlocked, we can make reforms in the courts. We can use the courts to:

✔️ Force the gun industry to use safer practices
✔️ Hold bad actors accountable
✔️ Defend life-saving gun laws
✔️ Secure justice for victims of gun violence

#EndGunViolence @bradybuzz
Just look at all we've accomplished. In over 30 years, @bradybuzz has brought or assisted in more than 250 lawsuits around preventing gun violence. We've won +$30 million dollars in settlements and verdicts for victims and their families. #EndGunViolence bradyunited.org/our-work/brady…
There is no single solution to gun violence. It is an multifaceted epidemic, and we need multifacted solutions.

Our philosophy at @bradybuzz is that we need to work across Congress, courts, and our communities in order to address it holistically and save lives. #EndGunViolence
It's been a hard past week, and our nation is still reeling from tragic, senseless bloodshed. That bloodshed that happens every day, when another 300 people are shot.

But we can make change. And we are.

Thank you for supporting @bradybuzz and for being a part of the solution.
This thread is getting lots of eyes (thank you!), so I'll make a quick pitch to donate to @bradybuzz.

Your donation will go to our nonpartisan work across Congress, courts, and communities to end America's gun violence epidemic. We believe we can do it.

We're named after White House Press Sec Jim Brady. After Jim was shot in the Reagan assassination attempt, he dedicated the rest of his life to taking on the NRA and passing sensible gun laws. He won the Brady Bill, which continues to save lives today.

OK, let's talk about a "well-regulated militia."

The NRA used to have the text of just the second half of the Second Amendment emblazoned across their Virginia headquarters.

Hmm, I wonder why?

🧵Thread
I know because, as a Virginian, I have spent years passing by (and protesting at...) the NRA's Fairfax headquarters — which they're getting kicked out of, but that's another thread for another time 🤣virginiamercury.com/blog-va/declar…
So why this Second Amendment erasure?

For decades, the NRA has tried to mislead people into thinking the Second Amendment has nothing to do with a "well-regulated militia."

...But that's why the Framers added the 2A to the Constitution.

In ratifying the Second Amendment, the Founding Fathers never intended to design an America where a right to shoot and kill overcomes the right to live. #GunReformNow
Guns don’t help further any aspect of public life.

They don't belong in grocery stores
They don't belong at state capitols
They don't belong at pollings places
They don't belong in places of worship
They don't belong in schools

#GunReformNow
What we're seeing in America is the gun lobby vision of the Second Amendment. They misinterpret the Constitution to entitle (white) civilians to walk the streets with AR-15s. In their view, the right to firearms trumps the right to live. #GunReformNow #GunControlNow @bradybuzz

ICYMI - here’s the video of @jrpsaki speaking about my hero, Jim Brady during today’s briefing. Honored to be carrying on his legacy w/ @bradybuzz. #EndGunViolence Thread 👇🏼
It was 21 years ago today that Pres. @BillClinton dedicated the @WhiteHouse Press Room for Jim — who honored his country both as a Press Secretary and as an advocate for gun violence prevention.
Even after being shot and nearly killed, Jim was relentless in his quest to save others from gun violence. He and Sarah wouldn’t stop until action was taken.
