Adam Larkman, 33, is here more as an observer than a protester, he tells @ConorGogarty. He says the Police and Crime Bill reminds him of 1994’s controversial Criminal Justice Act #BristolProtest#KillTheBill
This is the scene on College Green right now, as the protest is due to get underway. People are arriving with placards and the police are chatting to them
For latest updates - here bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…
Several hundred people are now on College Green, Bristol #BristolProtest#KillTheBill
here's the latest scenes.... all quite low key.
Shouts of 'Whose streets? Our streets' go up as people gather around the police talking to someone. People are gathering together now having been spread out a bit before.
"Rise, like lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number!
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you:
Ye are many—they are few!"
Andy here, reading Shelley's The Mask of Anarchy, written after Peterloo

Meanwhile, back at Bridewell St police station, a number of police vans just set off #KillTheBill#BristolProtest
latest here: bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…
Back at the Haymarket, there's a sit-in.
A breakaway from the main march has remained facing that line of riot police protecting Bristol's Bridewell city centre police station @imogen_mcguckin says 50 or so are sitting, another 250 standing #KillTheBill#BristolProtest
The main march has made it back to College Green in Bristol.
I'm hoping for some more poetry. #KillTheBill#BristolProtest
Back at the Haymarket, Bristol.
Some are waving daffodils and singing Three Little Birds by Robert Nesta Marley. Or at least the chorus.
The sit-in continues near Bridewell Police Station #KillTheBill#BristolProtest
Back at College Green and the people from the main march didn't stop long.
Now moving back UP Park Street this time towards Bristol famous Clifton Triangle.
Where's Ben Stokes? #KillTheBill#BristolProtest
Perhaps with the idea of recreating the Storming of the Great Reform Dinner in 1832 - bit of niche #BristolProtest history there for you - the protest march has turned left & is heading to Brandon Hill, Bristol #KillTheBill
Oh no, they got to the top, realised it was just Brandon Hill park and have turned around again & heading back down.
Good spot to watch the Bristol Balloon Fiesta, Brandon Hill if you're ever in Bristol for that, by the way #BristolProtest#KillTheBill
Back at Bridewell Police Station and a double line of police face a few hundred protesters who didn't go on that tour of historic Bristol, and just stayed in the Haymarket.
The scene at the Haymarket, near Bridewell Police Station, Bristol city centre
Protesters dance to a tiny tiny little speaker thing. #KillTheBill#BristolProtest
And our lost protest march from earlier has now found the Haymarket sit in protest. All still party mood, a few chants. #Bristol #BristolProtest#KillTheBill
PC Rain, the police officer's faithful meteorological friend, has come to help the lines of police.
Heavy rain now drenching everyone in the Haymarket.
Bit of Sgt Wind, & Det Supt Hailstones too.
Message from @ASPolice to the protesters. If you read between the lines, it says something like... come on, we're all getting wet here.... #KillTheBill#BristolProtest
Roads are closed, buses stopped & traffic backing up everywhere in Bristol city centre.
So the great 7.30-8pm shift change handover at the BRI, Children's Hospital & St Michael's maternity, is disrupted.
Staff can't leave if night shift hasn't arrived #KillTheBill#BristolProtest
I swear to God a kiddie just shouted into Imogen's phone as she filmed the FB Live at the #KillTheBill#BristolProtest "What do you think of Tottenham?"

"If peaceful protest is criminalised, every protest will end in a riot", she said.
Meet Greg Dring, 71. He's a retired clinical psychologist from Bath.
With a placard that says 'everything is annoying', Greg fears the new bill will see people imprisoned because they are deemed ”annoying”, so he has come to Bristol to join the #KillTheBill#BristolProtests
Things getting a bit tense again. Some protesters started chucking eggs at police.
Protesters urge each other to sit down in the face of lines of riot police like this at the head of Rupert Street, Bristol #BristolProtests#KillTheBill
What @ConorGogarty can see: "Protesters urging those in front to sit down because they fear police are going to move in. A woman turns round and says: 'They don’t want to sit down because they’ve been stepped on'." #KillTheBill#BristolProtests#Bristol
The man who erected the tent, a 50-year-old from Wales who declined to tell @ConorGogarty his name, confirms he will remain at Haymarket Bristol, until police move him on.
(Have a feeling they'll do more than just move him on) #BristolProtests#KillTheBill
Police have begun to move forward to kettle the protesters, with side roads also blocked.
Many of the protesters don't appear to realise this #BristolProtests#KillTheBill#BristolProtest
Police are amassing behind the main original line of police, preparing to move forward from Rupert Street.
Protesters look set to be dispersed towards Broadmead and the Bearpit, imminently.

Large numbers of police involved. Protesters have reached the Bearpit on one side, and outside Debenhams on the other. #BristolProtest#KillTheBill
The police are holding a new front line at the junction of Haymarket and the Bearpit roundabout, and across Marlborough Street.
Protesters remain in the Bearpit. #BristolProtest#KillTheBill
Scenes soon after the new frontline was established at the Bearpit. Dispersed a bit since then, five or ten minues ago, but maybe 100 protesters remain, maybe more. #BristolProtest#KillTheBill
Chaotic scenes in Bristol city centre now.
Streets are full of riot police, protesters dispersed all over the city centre: around the Bearpit, Castle Park. Roads into Broadmead blocked by police.
Police just left at speed from Bond St/Bearpit #BristolProtests#KillTheBill
Police are advancing into the Bearpit.
Mounted police, vans and officers are edging forward onto the roundabout in Bristol #BristolProtests#KillTheBill

Police moving at speed through the Bearpit to clear protesters #BristolProtest#KillTheBill
Waves of mounted police charges to force people down Bond Street from the Bearpit, Bristol, and (not on this video) someone chucked a firework at the horses.
More video of the charge down Bond Street of police, vans, dogs, and horses. Protesters backed up now to Newfoundland Street. And the advances continue.
video by @ConorGogarty #BristolProtest#KillTheBill.
Meanwhile, over on the 2nd front, police officers and dogs push protesters out of Cabot Circus, to Lower Castle Street and Castle Park
Video by @imogen_mcguckin #KillTheBill#BristolProtests
Police are formed in lines at various locations around the city centre, at the bottom of Newfoundland Street, into St Paul's Street, and into Castle Park, trying to disperse any large groups of protesters that are lingering.
This is the police line advancing, and soon withdrawing, into St Pauls Street, Bristol. #BristolProtests#KillTheBill
There's a big police presence in Bristol city centre still.
Police with dogs are pushing through the Castle Park area, lots of police with horses back at the Haymarket and around the Bridewell Police Station, and... #BristolProtests#KillTheBill
... at the bottom of the M32, at Newfoundland Street, a number of protesters are throwing bottles & other missiles at police vans & officers.
Protesters are gathered up St Paul Street and the Portland Square area, and police are trying to withdraw #KillTheBill#BristolProtests
Other missiles = a bike pedal,
thrown at police as they retreated back into their vans after deciding not to pursue a group of around 40 protesters at the other end of St Paul St, Bristol.
The pedal & bottles hit police vans #BristolProtest#KillTheBill
Very ominous big rumble of thunder over Bristol just now.
lots of rain too.
This looks like it's petering out as protesters head home and police continue to patrol the city from riot vans #BristolProtests#KillTheBill
ANNND I'm done. Almost 12 hours since the first protesters began arriving at College Green.
For the as-it-happened look back on another extraordinary, sickening, horrible night for Bristol, go here.
The full write up will be published at dawn on Saturday. bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…
One more
Here's @Urban_Pictures capturing the moment a man with arms crossed for protection tells police he is 'disabled and vulnerable' with I think Aspergers or autism (?) gets told he's a 'f***ing idiot' by police then whacked with shields a few times
I'm wincing at that. My nephew is ext. neuro-atypical and if that were him, I'd be pleading with him to get back away from the police there. Hope that man is ok.
A full account of the sickening scenes on the streets of Bristol last night.
Police used dogs, horses, batons and shields to break up an overwhelmingly peaceful sit-down demonstration in the Haymarket. bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…

Police in Bristol today confirmed the officer who they said suffered a broken arm in Sunday’s riots, didn’t have a broken arm, & the officer who they said had broken ribs didn’t suffer broken ribs.
Police said 40 officers were injured, however. bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…
Chief Constable Andy Marsh earlier today told @adam_ldr “Very thankfully following medical reassessment there are no broken bones.”
2/3
“The officer who we thought had broken an arm has been reassessed has not broken a bone, and the officer with chest injuries has not punctured his lung and is recovering at home.
“They were both serious (injuries) but that is good news.”

Scenes on College Green Bristol about 15 mins ago for another protest against the Police & Crime Bill.
This time by van-dwellers, travellers & Gypsies, who say their way of life would effectively be criminalised by changes to law included in the bill #KillTheBill#BristolProtest

Live updates - Kill the Bill protesters gather in Bristol city centre despite police warning bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…
2.30pm & the first person with a sign was told to move on
THREAD: Three areas of South Bristol have the highest coronavirus case rates in the Bristol area
Hengrove 950 (cases per 100,000 pop.)
Knowle West 942
Bishopsworth 859
according to today's latest case number figures.
Number of actual people who tested positive for covid between Mon Dec 28 & Sun Jan 3:
Hengrove 86 (it was 23 the week before)
Knowle West 71 (12)
Bishopsworth 51 (14)
Total from just those 3 areas: 208.
Some of those 208 people will be fine
Many will be ill ('a week-long worst flu of my life' a friend of mine described it as)
Maybe 10 or 20 will need a hospital
But statistically, maybe 2 or 3 will die
Could be more? 3, 4, 5? Could be 1 or we'll be lucky & say none.
But avg is 2
BREAKING: The number of people who tested positive for covid-19 in Knowle West, Bristol, has jumped by 1067% in a week. That's not a typo...
Throughout December, 6 people a week tested positive in Knowle West, roughly. Pretty low.
In the 7 days to Sat Jan 2, 70 (SEVENTY) did
I don't know if track & trace & @C_A_Gray will be able to tell us why cases have increased tenfold in the week after Christmas.
If track & trace worked at all, it would do.
But it doesn't.
Anyone in Knowle West any ideas? Massive Christmas party? A nursing home outbreak?
These are last week's cases.
The effects on hospital numbers will be felt in the coming days. Already, we're at record levels of people hospitalised & fighting to breathe in Bristol's hospitals.
This is not a hoax bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…
THREAD:
BREAKING: @aspolice have launched a major appeal, with CCTV pics, to find the 18 people responsible for how the Edward #ColstonStatue into the docks
Full story here - please read first - but this thread will examine how we got here... #Bristol bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…
It took 83 mins from toppling to dunking & the police didn’t intervene once
Afterwards, the mayor & others praised police for their restraint - no one was injured & nothing else was damaged- compare that to scenes elsewhere #Colston#Bristol#ColstonStatue bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-n…
The question soon arose tho - should those responsible face a police investigation/poss prosecution?
The morning after, it was a Q the mayor said was not for him - he said he was not going to be a ‘cheerleader’ for a prosecution, & it was for the criminal justice system, not him
