I often wonder, in the immediate aftermath of yet another mass shooting, if we in "the media" place too much emphasis on the types of weapons that are used in less than 5% of all gun homicides in this country...
this is NOT to diminish the loss of life in these events.
...but the ensuing coverage, with its emphasis on "assault weapons" pushes out critical coverage of the actual toll of overall gun violence in this country...
I hope that this doesn't get lost in the immediate aftermath of yet another mass shooting
And as legislators debate ways to try to reduce mass shootings, they must know that mass shootings only tell a chapter of a much larger story detailing this country's violent proclivities
This story is not an simple one to tell. And I feel sick for the families of the ten souls lost in Boulder
But we would be mistaken if we ended the story there.
And proper solutions are only possible when those who author them understand the depth of the actual problem.
