I often wonder, in the immediate aftermath of yet another mass shooting, if we in "the media" place too much emphasis on the types of weapons that are used in less than 5% of all gun homicides in this country...

this is NOT to diminish the loss of life in these events.
...but the ensuing coverage, with its emphasis on "assault weapons" pushes out critical coverage of the actual toll of overall gun violence in this country...

...which, as of late, has gotten worse.

time.com/5922082/2020-g…
Take 2020, for example.

Last year, according to gunviolencearchive.org, around 53 people died EVERY DAY in the US due to gun violence.

Think of it this way, if ten people died at 2:30pm in Boulder, it might haven taken another 4-5 hours for another TEN to die in the US.
That means by 7:30pm Monday... another ten families had to experience their own version of the Boulder mass shooting.

I don't know what the solution here is. What happened in Boulder on Monday has shaken me and this newsroom to its core... once again.
But if we fail to contextualize this national problem... we do a disservice, IMHO, to the massive number of its victims.

This is NOT a gun control thread.

But I wouldn't be doing my job -- a job where perspective and context is critical -- if I didn't put it out there.
This is a story @katieawilcox and I did following the mass murder of 58 in Las Vegas in 2017.

We found our precisely how long it took for another 58 people to die in the US.

(49 hours and 38 minutes)

I hope that this doesn't get lost in the immediate aftermath of yet another mass shooting

And as legislators debate ways to try to reduce mass shootings, they must know that mass shootings only tell a chapter of a much larger story detailing this country's violent proclivities
This story is not an simple one to tell. And I feel sick for the families of the ten souls lost in Boulder

But we would be mistaken if we ended the story there.

And proper solutions are only possible when those who author them understand the depth of the actual problem.
