Since I can't help myself:

Photo 1: 49 Plymouth, Rudy Rodriguez-style hot rod truck w/ chopped 38-39 Chevy cab, 51-52 Chevy, 95ish Buick Park Avenue to left

Photo 2: 73-76 Chevy Impala 2 door

Photo 3: 39-41 Chevy, though not 100% sure

And for Steve Adler and Greg Casar: anybody who pushes high density housing and getting rid of cars should probably sit this one the fuck out

2001: working class guy buys modest $100k bungalow in East Austin

2011: city approves a kazillion $400k condo projects around him

2021: working class guy's property tax is now 2x his mortgage payments

This is known as "affordable housing"

And now the Kondo Karens call the cops on him for working on his lowrider in his driveway.

Did I mention his favorite bodega is now a cat cafe and his car part outlet was bulldozed to make a WeWork space for an app startup?

Kinda personal for me. I am in the Loyal Order of Moose, and the Moose Lodge in East Austin was "revitalized" into twee tech offices in 2018.

The ATX Moose were most all Latino, lifelong Austinites, US military vets, and fantastic car guys. Just couldn't afford the tax bill.

The ATX Moose Lodge used to host hot rod and lowrider shows a few times a year. Hell of a great time, but now "revitalized" out of existence.

Don't know if that's good career advice, but I think we can all agree that whatever passes as opinion writing (left or right) is now so interchangeably conformist and boilerplate it might as well have been churned out by 3 algorithms

with a handful of exceptions, I can barely name any journo who is saying anything remotely interesting, or memorable, or who couldn't be replaced by 100 twitter randos without anybody noticing

I kinda have a 4-part writer test:

1. do they write about interesting topics nobody else is covering?

2. do they write in a unique, entertaining, or surprising style?

3. do they seem to know what they're talking about?

4. am I learning anything from reading them?

*Ed "Big Daddy" Roth was the king of adolescent t-shirt hot rod monsters in the 60s (and the greatest artist of the 20th Century IMO), but he had competitors. Stanley Mouse for one, and Bill Campbell who designed the "Weird-Ohs" plastic model line for Hawk.
