X : Why are you so bullish on serverless?
Me : AWS creates the future by industrialising the past, it concentrates on shifting product to utility. Amazon then migrates onto this once convinced ... the first "huge" cloud transformation project was Amazon moving onto AWS ...
... if you listened carefully at reInvent last year then you would have heard Jassy say that 50% of all new Amazon apps are built on serverless ... that's all the signal you need. AWS owns the underlying space, Amazon itself is building on top (including the practices) ...
... if you're fighting below the line i.e. in the containers / Kubernetes space then you're just building a future legacy ... it's the wrong space to own if your focus is the future but the right space to own if your focus is on short term extraction ...
... you need to think of this cloud space as a war, there's no point in winning a specific battle if the future position it gives you means you lose the war. I love Google but they have really played a poor game, out of their depth and I expect them out of cloud before 2025.
X : Why such a short time frame?
Me : I don't expect Google to displace Microsoft, let alone Amazon and as losses mount, I suspect we will be coming back to this. Google has form -crn.com/news/cloud/goo…
X : Where is conversational programming on that map?
Me : Sure, ftfy ... not relevant to the discussion at hand, that's more for future players.
X : Why is Google so poor in your view?
Me : They've got great engineers but it's the strategic play that concerns me. I had a good old rant at Google Next when I was invited to speak back in 2017 ... they focused on the wrong area of the stack IMHO. Time will tell.
X : Kubernetes is huge.
Me : You can ride the growth for a time but the game has already shifted, you just end up painting yourself into a new corner of legacy. Fine for a grow quick, sell to someone who doesn't know startup.
X : What should my strategy be?
Me : Depends upon who you are, your capabilities, what you want to do and your timeframe. The map is just a map ... it doesn't tell you what your strategy is, that requires thought ...
i.e. I could play an extract value game from legacy infrastructure or a grow quick and extract value from K8s or build a future position in serverless or focus on building SaaS apps or play a high risk gamble into conversational programming or a mix of the above ...
... never forget the long tail of value, the last punchcards systems in operation in the UK were in 2011.

The map isn't your strategy, however your strategy should be informed by the landscape (i.e. the map).
X : What about horizons?
Me : Depends upon who you are and where you are on the map and those horizons will change as the map evolves.
X : What about VMWare?
Me : They are very good at exploiting technology change to keep themselves going ... they'll make hay with K8s, same as they did OpenStack and they'll probably flog you a hybrid edge computing answer to everything ... as long as it has VMWare.
X : You seem to like VMWare?
Me : I respect a plucky fighter, they've got a good few decades of life in them ... more than enough time for friends to retire.
X : Alibaba?
Me : Oh, that's the real battle coming our way ... Amazon vs Alibaba.
X : Google joining forces with Alibaba?
Me : That would make life interesting but I just don't see it. More likely MSFT and Alibaba, they've got some real strategic wit about them these days.
As it currently stands Alibaba and Amazon both have space arms, MSFT is partnering with SpaceX but is missing that component without them ... still, it's going to get interesting as Moore's law goes into space. Poor old 5G masts, still there'll be value in the market for a time.
X : Satellites are new!
Me : Cubesat. It's all about industrialisation of components and more importantly industrialisation of network topology. Even copper / fibre networks are custom to the physical landscape, less so with masts (broadcast) and satellites is a numbers game ...
... so whilst the concept of a network is commodity / utility and many of the components are commodity / utility ... between these are the network topology itself. For copper that's custom to the geographic landscape, for 4G/5G masts less so, for satellites not at all.
X : Not sure I understand.
Me : Ok, hopefully this will help. The Achilles heel (which used to be the main value of the asset) is network topology tied to physical location i.e. geography. It's why satellite will win by numbers i.e. it's a volume game not tied to geography.
What will kill companies in the industry is the copper in the ground, or the fibre in the ground, or the installed masts at prime locations ... it's the source of inertia, the thing that was valued, the sign of past success. C'est la vie.
i.e. you don't lay satellite to the home, you broadcast. Masts ... well, you've got to be near a powerful mast. Copper and Fibre to the home ... that's your problem, the network topology is custom to the geography. No escaping that. It'll take time, see mobile vs fixed line.
Btw ... along with all my tech, I still have a fixed line ... people often think that's quaint. It's a throwback to the past but eventually it will go.

X : We're adopting a cloud first policy.
Me : Good on you.
X : Just good?
Me : You don't have a choice - punctuated equilibrium. You are being forced to adopt a cloud first policy, it's not a choice, it's a survival mechanism. Choice ended around 2012, you're waking up to this.
X : We think we can make a difference in the container space.
Me : Ah, so your grand plan is to wake up late, go to the fight almost a decade after it's over and say "we're ready to rumble" ... sounds like a reenactment society. Do you get dressed up in period costumes?
X : What do you suggest?
Me : Serverless is where the action is.
X : Build a serverless environment?
Me : No, that battle is almost over, you'll just get crushed by the big guns. There are places you can attack though. Time limited.

Create a futures market offsetting cabon emissions against future trees, I'll create collaterized carbon obligations and synthetic swaps on top. Run it all on blockchain and make us a fortune!

Saving the planet is not guaranteed, survivability make go up as well as down ->
Of course, I'm only saying this in jest.

In practice, this market will already exist.
In our current system the solutions to problems caused by transactions are always ... more transactions.

Inequality ... let's have philanthropy

Climate change ... let's have carbon offsets and a carbon market

At no point do we go ... maybe the transactions ARE the problem.

Freedom of the press? Oh dear ... whilst I'm supportive of the police and understand the difficulty of the work, this need investigation ...
... however, the use of shields as a weapons by striking with the edges ... they are supposed to protective measures of crowd control.
It's almost always a near impossible task for the Police to get the balance right, however the situation is not helped by a certain group of MPs jumping in and flaming the fires for their own political ends - bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

Well, I would in general agree ... though I use three different words. I would also note that in 15 years of building teams / companies with three different archetypes that there are some basic lessons to be learned ... /1
Firstly, it's a model, it's not new (Robert X. Cringely talked of this in the 1990s) and as a model it's also wrong. So, think of the three archectypes as a useful guide but be willing to adapt ... /2
Secondly, the characteristics of the archetypes are different but people adapt, people change - so let people self select and change. All are important and which archetype "leads" depends upon the state of the evolution of that industry ... /3

The flag debate in a nutshell -> "it is much easier to have a distracting row about flags than be held accountable for such 'patriotic' acts as cutting the army to its smallest size in 165 years or offering NHS staff a 1% pay rise" - mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/t…
I do love the wider discussion of little Englanders becoming tired of being called little Englanders ... I thought everyone was being very polite, very British by not using the word fascists to describe this subculture. Well, if they insist.
Oh, and the appeal to a sense of duty -there are many forms of duty. There is our duty of care to others, there is our duty to a set of rules that describe a behavioural norm (i.e. honour) and there is our duty to an authority and its symbols (i.e. subservience) ...

I love this line ... "But what is that space? We’ve had mathematical idealizations and abstractions of it for two thousand years. But what really is it? Is it made of something, and if so, what?" - writings.stephenwolfram.com/2020/04/finall… by @@stephen_wolfram (H/T @ajbouh) ... why? ... well ...
... a long time ago, I spent a decade of my life working on ... nothing - blog.gardeviance.org/2006/07/insane…
Whilst many ask "where did all the matter come from" ... the question that plagued me which led to the whole zero board stuff was "where did all the space come from, it's not nothing, it's space". That's the question we had to answer. That post by @stephen_wolfram is fascinating.
