So, I got admitted into the UofS for a PhD in biomedical engineering with focus on synchrotron X-ray imaging and biomechanics in 2012. This was at the start of the 4th Industrial Revolution (began in 2011). And 9 months into the PhD program, I evaluated and couldn’t fit my
biomechanics major into any of the Industry 4.0 technologies & synchrotron x-rays seem to be a technology for the distant future. I was so worried and started looking at what else I could do (based on my background) that fits into any of the 140 technology swimlanes.
Then, I found 3D-printing and with my background in physics, I was vast in Material Science and took a minor in this during my MSc. So, I decided to approach the head of #3Dprinting lab at the UofS in an email with all my transcripts and detailed out my value. He said yes but you
won’t be funded for 3 months (evaluation period) and this is contingent upon my current supervisor supporting the move. Well, my current supervisor then cancelled my funding and gave a fight. I left to join the 3D-printing lab with no funding for 3 months! This was the lowest
point of my PhD. The funding was reinstated as agreed, it was 30% smaller than my initial one. I picked up a job at Sephora as a sales girl to augment. But every day in that 3Dprinting lab, I planned this future! I strategically obtained all the tools I needed to work in the
industry while also doing my lab work. I took 8 classes instead of 2 recommended for PhD students. I networked, I travelled to the US and across Canada to job fairs to understand the market needs. In the end, I applied to 3000 jobs in the last 3 months of my PhD. I got my first
job and it was an entry level job 😁👏🏾. I made it into the #3Dprinting industry.
What if I didn’t decide to drop the previous focus of my PhD (comfort zone)? What if I didn’t evaluate what I would do post-PhD 6 months in?
When to evaluate your long term goals is not when you are 2 months away from it. What are the What are you doing now to guarantee the future you want? What are the 3 things you need to change this second quarter to get to where you want to be by the end of the year?
It’s the end of the Quarter, are you evaluating?
On #TheMakingOfAModernDayDeborah, Deborah was a tough negotiator and a warrior. I got that from her 😃. How are you negotiating and strategically fighting for your future? Do you know what you need to get to where you want to be?

I was singularly single for a while. I had bad relationships. I was a fixer. I went about just getting attracted to broken men and fixing them up. Then, they would dump me and go bring a lower girl and marry. I coordinated one’s thesis,
I housed a man and fed him 😂. I helped planned men’s careers. I was fixing them for other women 😓.
So, when I was in year 3 of my PhD, I got engaged to an emotionally abusive man. He told me my PhD was miniature and that I won’t amount to much. He asked me to quit and move
to Norway and be his full house wife. He told me I was ugly. He called my parents uneducated. Yet, he engaged me.
So, after all that this Pastor’s PA who went to church 3 times every week ended that relationship after continued emotional abuse and threats.
I used to live in Finland. If it is not better than I left it. Don’t go there! You deserve better!
I did cleaning job for 4.5 years and they won’t give us any other type of jobs! I could not collect samples from patients recruited for my study! Being black was my sin!
If anyone spill any jargons to cajole you to go to Finland, show them my tweet. Let them tell us it is not true.
I picked race o. I left and never looked back. Please o, let our hustle shine eye o. One chance abroad dey o. Don’t go and enter one chance o. I did once.
Yes to Norway, you will get jobs in oil and gas. These days oil and gas is no longer booming. I need to check with my folks there for current info.
No to Finland. Sweden is in between.
I don’t want you to go Israelite waka like I did. I did 🇳🇬➡️🇫🇮 ➡️🇨🇦➡️🇺🇸. The hustle is real
Tips from Joel Lessem, CEO of Firmex from his talk for @STEMHub_ and @africa_hacks titled: Start up and scale up
- Buy a business plan software. It makes your proposition look professional and enable your planning
- Failure is not an option. If you fail, pick lessons, continue
Key factors for success
- Product/Market Fit: critical
- People / execution: important
- Capital: desired
Must go hand in hand
Commercial proof: Are there successful businesses emerging in this category? If there are no successes; the market is may be not ready or the product isn’t that useful
Market size & competition: size of target customers? Is the market fragmented or there is one dominant player?
Did you know that similar to the Canadian PR Programs, the US also have a merit-based immigration system to grant you a Green Card based on National Interest? If you possess Advanced Degrees (Masters and PhDs), you may be able to migrate to the US as a Greencard holder 💃!
And this time, no IELTS required 👏🏾🙌🏿! And age restrictions may not be a big problem (amen to this).
This Sunday, I am bringing Dr. Ozi to come and help us break down this process: requirements, how to get started, best practices for your green card application and so on.
You deserve to know there are multiple options for you and be able to go where you can have economic power.
Your degree is a power you hold and it’s your extraordinary ability. Information is power and I want to make sure you will get to milk the RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT.
I am so honored to be among the 100 Manufacturing Women Leaders getting celebrated tonight as #STEPAhead Honorees by @TheMfgInstitute!
I joined @Cummins 2 years ago to lead Additive Manufacturing and to be receiving this award has given my career a multi-level leap! #MFGWomen

This girl here, she was a child that her parents didn’t want that came accidentally (my head is strong 😂), she was a pepper-seller, she was a cleaner, she was a salesgirl, she had a couple of failed relationship / engagements, she has regular impostor syndrome moments.
she still think she doesn’t speak enough good English, and she didn’t get married until her mid-thirties.
But, she never stopped dreaming, planning, praying and fighting for what she believes in. She understands the power of positioning and clarity is her last name.
Every time she remembers who she is, she changes the game one more time. She is a nobody that is a somebody somewhere in her head so she continued to fight to be a somebody. In the process, she became a 3D-printing Queen and that changed her career and life-trajectory forever.
