On the apparent @NigAirForce NAF475 Alphajet loss: 1) There is no evidence the aircraft was actually shot down
2) The editing with the photoshopped explosions leads one to assume that even if #BokoHaram managed to score a hit on the plane, it did not explode in the air because
3) The wreckage appears concentrated in one spot, making an mid air explosion unlikely as that would have dispersed wreckage over quite distant
4)The video shows a burning aircraft descending at speed almost vertically towards the ground
5) Yet one of the deceased pilots appears to be in an ejector seat with a partially deployed.
6) It would be useful for people to understand the difference between missiles, heavy machine guns, RPG & air defence artillery.
So What?
7) Considering the tempo of air ops, the number of aircraft lost in 10 years is within reasonable boundaries.
8) Even if this was a successfully shootdown, unless it was a deliberate air ambush, it does not indicate a massive step change in capability.
9)The NAF however should review its tactics to identify vulnerabilities such as multiple passes from the same direction over a target
10) The enemy’s ability to dominate the information space is impressive, they have produced a high quality combat video on 48 hours
11) They have taken control of the narrative and message, despite being in the bush. How come their propaganda is better than that of a wealthy nation state?
12) Hopefully lessons on close air support, tactics, search and rescue, information warfare etc, will be learnt from this
13) But it is hoped that in the interim the bodies of Flt Lt John Abolarinwa and Flt Lt Ebiakpo Chapele may be recovered and their sacrifice honoured by all Nigerians.

May the Labours of our Heroes past and present never be in vein

1)This depressing statement says everything about the dearth of strategic thinking in Nigeria. When Nigeria hired PMCs in 2015 they came with well trained, well led, well equipped soldiers, air support & a logistics chain. This is what led to their successes.
2) So the question is why has Nigeria failed to develop a well trained, well equipped, supplied and led Army after 10 years of counter insurgency? South Africa’s Parabats were formed after SADF personnel attended a single course in the UK in 1961.
3)Portugal reformed its entire army in order to fight the colonial wars in Africa, Azerbaijan reformed its entire army to deliver victory in its recent war. Russia began reforms of its huge military after the terrible conflict in Chechnya.

Whilst it is understandable that people wish to replace the Nigerian military service chiefs, it is akin to treating a headache when you have malaria. The issues are much wider than the individuals in post at the moment. In fact a personality based system is part of the problem
Complete security sector reform is needed. All of Nigeria's problems are internal, thus within the purview of the @NigeriaPolice, the deployment of the military is indicative of its failure. The Army is not fit for this purpose & is incapable of reforming to respond to reality
Priorities (1) A Strategic Defence Review is needed (2) The political leadership must accept that the primary role of the Security Forces is not regime/ elite protection but defence of the land & people (2) Civilian control of the military must be by competent & empowered people
