1. Bangladesh is in lockdown again from Monday. It looks sadly essential - & in fact overdue #Bangladesh #bangladeshlockdown 🇧🇩
2. But will anyone comply? CAN people stay home when so many live on what they can earn day to day?
3. A year ago, @BIGD_BRACU & @AcctResearchCtr @Georgetown researchers asked this question - about the last lockdown. You can read what we learned here: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
4. People were scared in 2020 & wanted to be safe at home. But they also knew most Bangladeshis couldn’t afford to do so for long.
5. Government also knew that people faced a choice of hunger or disease. They did not enforce lockdown strictly, but quietly let it drop.
6. What can #Bangladesh government do this time to make it work? @albd1971

- communicate clearly
- provide relief fast, fairly & for all
- don’t let political agendas interfere with public health priorities
7. #Bangladesh is good at managing disasters & crises. #Covid should not be an exception. Anniversary or no anniversary.

50 years ago today was the Bhola cyclone, one of the deadliest tropical storms in world history. It killed up to half a million people in what was then East #Pakistan, and triggered the #Bangladesh liberation war
The Pakistani authorities were negligent & frankly unconcerned about the devastation in their eastern wing. (A bit like President Trump's response to #hurricane Maria in #PuertoRico). Weeks later they held the first democratic election in #Pakistan's history
East Bengali nationalists Awami League @albd1971 campaigned against the failures of the Pakistani state & won one of the most stunning democratic victories ever.
