My fam had a beautiful spring break wkd in LA. Full bellies, sun tans, and lots of bball. It was joyous seeing Black boys live fully. I was ready to ride this high - but it ended so abruptly after hearing that another BM was killed by the police.

#thread on spillover effects:
Losing one life to the police is more than enough, because #DanteWright mattered to many. It sets off a ripple effect in his community. & it becomes overbearing because we know that it is never just one. It is a pervasive systematic horror that ravages communities far and near.
Losing Black live to the police represents #StolenBreaths of those who are killed as @RRHDr , Medina, and @RheaBoydMD told us. But it also represents #StolenLivelihoods from those who are left behind…
"Spillover" here is vicarious trauma of being exposed to police murder & can impact our health. @JacobBor et al found that reports of a police killing of unarmed Black person in your state is associated with up to 14 additional poor mental health days…
The spillover increases stress and is linked to worse physical health too. @aasewell @hedwig_lee & colleagues found that "living in lethally surveilled areas is linked to a greater risk of high blood pressure and obesity for all neighborhood residents"…
The police murders are the tip of the ice burg. Policing is terror simply because the threat that it could be our last encounter. @aasewell's & colleagues work is fundamental is showing "collateral damage" of invasive policing…
This spillover stress can even be felt by those unborn. My former student @At_Kathryn found in her dissertation that BW who lived in the counties surrounding Ferguson has worse maternal health outcomes in the 9 mos after #MikeBrown was murdered.
When we say we are sick and tired we are literally sick and tired. Stolen joy, stolen peace, stolen sleep, stolen brothers, stolen sisters, stolen parents, stolen breaths. #StopKillingUs
I am seeing sources report #DanteWright and #DaunteWright and this is so frustrating we can't get get the name write. Sorry.
B4 this news, while at a street market I reminded youngest that we do not buy guns that look real. Sons friend quietly asked “why?” & oldest went to explain that cops have killed Black kids for carrying toy guns. only 10 - so young to carry this weight - but his survival matters

A lot of #Krug convos are bringing up issues related to racial identity, racial ambiguity, & colorism and I just want to say that all of these concepts are related but also very *different*

I want to share some relevant (mainly sociological) works in this #Thread
First, Nikki Kanna's work has explored passing and reflected appraisals for mixed race folks. Here w/ Cathryn Johnson on Black mixture "Passing as Black: Racial Identity Work among Biracial Americans"… and also Asian Ams too…
I love Jenn Sims' (@RavenclawSoc23) @SREJournal article on how questioning race impacts ID choice: "Reevaluation of the Influence of Appearance and Reflected Appraisals for Mixed-Race Identity: The Role of Consistent Inconsistent Racial Perception"…
