I've written a lot of weird stories, but this one with @bellingcat takes the cake. A loose thread turned into a tangled web, looping in Libyan money in Ghana, border-hopping in Montenegro, Russian lobbyists and some unexpected familiar faces bellingcat.com/news/2021/04/1…
This story started with one of the biggest double takes I've ever done. Scrolling through the site of a French human rights organisation, I came across 'Robert Comune', 'Pakolov Zbishik' and 'Wacław Kozakiewicz'. #Auspol Twitter users may also be double-taking right now.
In reality, 'Robert', 'Pakolov' and 'Wacław' are in fact current and former Australian politicians Scott Ludlam, Bob Brown and Adam Bandt.
I have no idea how they got away with this for so many years. I can only assume the Venn diagram overlap of people looking at French human rights organisations linked to Russian lobbyists and people who recognise minor party Australian politicians by sight is actually quite small
Other key members of CIPDH's team also turned out to be using stolen photographs. For example, their chief legal officer 'Anna Bozin' is actually the singer Lia Ices. After we contacted them, CIPDH removed a total of 16 profiles from their team page.
Obviously, this was super weird and I wasn't going to let it go. I had no idea at that point that I was just glimpsing the tip of a huge iceberg of weirdness.
CIPDH has used fantasy passports, imitation license plates, and for years has claimed to be associated with the United Nations. However, when we asked the UN told @bellingcat that it has no relationship with this organisation.
They may not have been working with the UN as they claimed, but they certainly have been busy.
CIPDH has been connected to a range of curious international incidents, from former Libyan intelligence officials allegedly moving Qaddafi's wealth out via Ghana, as reported by @shootingthemess and @ak_mack... foreignpolicy.com/2021/03/23/hum…
... to the organisation's Vice President, a Montenegrin businessman who in 2020 reportedly spirited himself across the Serbian border, despite being banned from the country, after allegedly committing a violent extortion attempt - a little odd for a VP of a 'human rights' group.
As if that wasn't enough, others linked to this group include individuals who have played key roles in supporting Russia's annexation of Crimea, and the Russian lobbyist who helped fundraise for the legal costs of convicted foreign agent Maria Butina. theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
Confused about how all this fits together? You should be. Investigating this story has been by turns bizarre, frustrating and comical. I've never had so many genuine laugh out loud moments with a story like this.
So if you like weird, winding stories full of 'interesting' characters, unexpected twists and some moments of hilarious absurdity, this one's worth your time bellingcat.com/news/2021/04/1…

For me, the striking thing about so many of these images of rioters in the Capitol is that what they're doing - all of them - is creating content for social media.

At least in their minds, the true seat of power is not actually in that building. It's online.
Politics is always performative, but the nature of the performance has changed dramatically in just a few years. What we saw today was the sudden, violent disruption of one performance, the certification of electoral college votes, for another, wilder show.
They could have done anything in that building today. What they did, by and large, was take selfies and create social media content. That was what really mattered to them. Whatever higher motives they might claim, their actions suggest that was the real motive for many of them.

I have been continuing to piece together the timeline behind this 'Typhoon Investigations' Biden-China report.

TLDR; a persona posing as a North Asia specialist which promoted the report before it was published by @BaldingsWorld appears to be fabricated.

There are now a number of Twitter accounts posing as 'Typhoon Investigations'. I was able to eliminate most of these as imposters or unlikely to be connected to the original source. One, however, stood out. Image
It does seem plausible that TyphoonInvesti1 AKA 'Martin Aspen' could be connected to the original source of the report (which you may recall gave its author as 'M A'). This account pre-dates the earliest known published version of the report on Sep 3.

I have been looking into the timeline of the "Typhoon Investigations" report which makes a number of allegations about links between the Bidens and the Chinese Communist Party. I've found a few interesting things.

Thread.
The earliest version of the report which I have found so far appears to have been posted on Sept 3 on a blog called 'Intelligence Quarterly.' The document shared is dated Aug 31st. PDF properties show that the file was authored by a user 'M A' on Sep 1st. archive.is/FTs2A ImageImage
Intelligence Quarterly is a blog 'dedicated to collecting important daily news on various topics into a clean, easy format.' It appears to have been running since 2010. It is currently using privacy protections, but was previously registered in 2016 to an Albert Marko (so, A M) ImageImage
