Each day, 600+ kids arrive at the 🇺🇸 🇲🇽 border w/o their parents.

Make no mistake, families don't make decisions like this lightly.

But ultimately, however dangerous the trek north may be...staying behind is, many times an assurance of violence and/or poverty.

A thread 🧵👇🏾
Upon arriving, unaccompanied children are supposed to be held in CBP custody for a max of 72 hrs after which they're sent to an Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) temporary shelter.

There, they wait to be reunified with a family member/sponsor. But that’s not the full story...
Inside influx shelters like Carrizo, our staff provides Know Your Rights presentations for kids.

Bc we believe it's imperative every child know their rights & have access to legal rep, as their time detained is coupled w/the start of deportation proceedings in immigration court.
Yes, that's right.

While ORR searches for family sponsors, DHS is simultaneously putting kids into deportation proceedings.

This is just one of the reasons our work inside these shelters is so crucial.
Here’s what one of our Legal Assistants, Luz Varela has to say about her work inside:

"I make sure children know of their rights, such as access to food and medical care. I talk to them about what's to come for them in their legal case..." cont.
"I ask them what they feel and what they are looking for in this country. I encourage them & their dreams. I listen to them.

These are the kids that our country vilifies, but they are kind, resilient young people in search of hope for the future."
Despite a government failing to find humane solutions, a country playing ignorant to their pleas, and a system designed to fail them...

These children want to live a normal, safe, happy life with family.
That's why we fight for the legal protections of every immigrant -- especially the unaccompanied children arriving at the border & applying for asylum.
Our work is defined by the social, legal, physical, and emotional needs of kids & families arriving at the border.

Our legal advocates, social caseworkers & mental health providers know what it takes for these children to be here and to navigate the complexities of the process.
Together w/supporters, allies & advocates, we provide the necessary legal tools & support children & families alike need to defend themselves.

It's on us to create a safe, welcoming space to greet them.

Today our Director of Released Children’s Services is visiting the Carrizo Springs detention center along with members of Congress. We're currently providing the kids detained there with legal services.

As RAICES, we’ve been at the frontlines of this issue for many years.🧵👇🏽
Let us be clear: There is no “security crisis” or “surge” at the border. The situation we are facing is nothing new. Child migration and the numbers of kids we're seeing enter through the border is not unprecedented, unusual or surprising. Statistically this was very predictable.
The number of children coming into the US changes depending on the time of year.

This is normal. This is expected. This is something the government can prepare for.

🧵THREAD: TPS for Venezuelans

Any action to provide relief by the Biden admin is a welcome gesture that'll improve the lives of thousands of immigrants living in the U.S.

This shows us an admin willing to use Executive Action to provide relief to the immigrant community.
With this, we are aware that other countries are in dire need of TPS.

People from places such as Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala are unable to return, and require Executive relief as well.
And while TPS would be a huge boost to the lives of many immigrants, we must also seek permanent solutions for immigrants already in the U.S.

We demand that Congress take action immediately and provide permanent protection for TPS recipients.

To no surprise Operation Lone Star is Abbott's latest attack on the migrant community, an operation upholding racist rhetoric from the previous administration.

Abbott seems to be incapable of protecting Texans under a pandemic, yet highly skilled in criminalizing migrants. 🧵👇🏽
Under Operation Lone Star air, ground, marine and tactical border security units will be deployed to "high-threat areas for cartel activity and drug smuggling".

The data backing this increase of criminal activity seem to stem from Abbott claiming to know "cartel strategy".
Abbott's blatant hypocrisy of stalling efforts to approve federal funds for #COVID19 safety & lifting the mask mandate only supports the xenophobic characterization of immigrants as a risk to public health.

Which is what Title 42 is & what he's using to his political advantage.

A lot of folks may be celebrating the end of immigrant family detention centers.

We're here to tell you this simply isn't true.
.@ICEgov is saying these facilities will simply become “3 day processing centers” for those given Notices to Appear (a charging doc initiating removal proceedings).

But we've been representing families inside of Karnes for years & can pretty much call BS on this.
For the past 3 years we’ve observed up close countless & frequent policy changes directly impacting the lives of people seeking safety, imprisoned by our gov't.

ICE can resume expedited removal & prolonged detention at any moment.

This is a glaring PR stunt by ICE.

There's a lot of talk & uncertainty around "Emergency Reception Centers" for children like Carrizo Springs & Homestead opening up again under the Biden Administration.

So let's walk through what all of this actually means for immigrant children at our border.

A thread 🧵⤵️
This move represents a chilling continuity of Trump's attitudes towards immigrants & reinforces the notion that immigrants—including unaccompanied children—are less than human & should be warehoused away from the general population instead of being reunited w/relatives in the US.
FACT: The facilities run by @HHSGov & the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) ARE better than those run by ICE or CBP.

CAVEAT: The Trump Admin showed us that the HHS/ORR system could be weaponized against immigrants.

Think family separation under the Zero Tolerance policy.

What's happening in Texas is criminal:
Food shortages. Unsafe drinking water. Impassable roads. Flooded homes. A humanitarian crisis like we’ve not seen before.

This is what's going on in immigrant detention centers in the midst of the #TexasFreeze & what you can do to help🧵👇🏾
We have 10 offices across the state and most of our 250+ staff members have been without power for much of the week.

Luckily, we've now been able to communicate with many of our clients & community members both in and out of detention centers.

But things are looking bleak.
Immigrants in detention centers are freezing cold and not able to get the word out about what’s going on inside these prisons.

Take Ubaldo's situation for example 👇🏾
