We are LIVE tweeting the discussion – “Waters of Growth: Towards an Arabian Sea Community” with @AakankshaT, @AUThackeray, @IEAKwame, Harsh V. Pant and Majed Al Ansari

Participate with #Raisina2021
Harsh V. Pant: It is often forgotten that in India’s conception of the Indo-Pacific, the Arabian sea is the critical anchor. #Raisina2021
Majed Al Ansari: Since 2010, the US in the Arabian Sea & Middle East have started pulling out of major conflicts in the region. This means that local powers and regional powers must play a different role which is expected of them. #Raisina2021
Majed Al Ansari: Since the inception of statehood in this part of the world, the states have been either dependent on external powers or uncooperative with its direct surroundings.
Majed Al Ansari: We must start talking about community in this part of the world that better reflect the interests of the countries in this region without looking at global super powers as policemen of the region. #Raisina2021
.@IEAKwame: The Arabian Sea’s role in Africa’s growth is becoming more pronounced. Most of Africa’s development is predicated on exports and connecting to global supply chains. The importance of shipping lines and maritime trade speaks for itself. #Raisina2021
.@IEAKwame: The countries on the eastern coast of Africa tend to have a long coastline and are building ports to expand their maritime trade. Most of that security on that side is governed by China, British, French and American. #Raisina2021
.@IEAKwame: For Eastern African countries, the connection to the Arabian Sea is important for their own energy security, trade and commerce. This sea board will have a great expansion in coming years. #Raisina2021
.@AakankshaT: Many gulf countries attract students for high education, not only for its accessible geography and career opportunities but because of many international universities present there. #Raisina2021
.@AakankshaT: In the pandemic, the marriage of key industries with creative industries have thrived. This part of the world has largest youth population & they want access to opportunities. They want leaders to give them opportunities to capital & access to education #Raisina2021
.@AUThackeray: The Arabian Sea community is the most complex & ambitious community that we can start building. India’s western coastline has always been a part of Arabian Sea community. Mumbai has always been major port that has had people, cargo & goods coming in. #Raisina2021
.@AUThackeray: We need to find out common thread within the community, and build an institution for the Arabian Sea community. We need to build on our past history that united us, common empires, religions and cultures. #Raisina2021
Majed Al Ansari: Almost all countries surrounding the Arabian Sea are somewhat dependent on maritime trade. There is therefore a need to protect maritime trade so as to help us in developing our states together. No one state can tackle these issues on the own. #Raisina2021
.@IEAKwame: The developmental imperative for African countries require expansion in global connections. Whether they will do this depends on their domestic politics. For Africa to determine the global economic order, there needs to be a change in posture & thinking. #Raisina2021
.@AakankshaT: The urban youth in the Arabian Sea community are more similar than they are different and there remains plenty that states can do to realise the full potential of the relationship. #Raisina2021
.@AUThackeray: The Arabian Sea region can be self-sufficient. As different as we may be, our needs and requirements for the current times and the future are the same. #Raisina2021

.@NagmaSahar: The pandemic struck at the roots of global order which many believe was already falling. Pre-pandemic global trends seemed redundant. #Raisina2021
.@NagmaSahar: The withering of the pre-pandemic global order is epitomised by the failure of the WHO to play a global leadership role during the pandemic. Other than the WHO, the UN and organisations like the WTO are also struggling for contemporary relevance. #Raisina2021

.@teddyboylocsin: The future will be determined by the dynamics of the Indo-Pacific. The Indo-Pacific is undoubtedly the arena for the contemporary version of the Great Game, where multiple players with diverse ambitions display their strategic skills.
#Raisina2021
.@teddyboylocsin: Southeast Asian nations remain skeptical of Great Power schemes that seek to drag in ASEAN nations to larger quarrels and far bigger ambitions that Southeast Asia as a region of peace do not share.
