We are now live tweeting the panel on ‘Trojan Manoeuvre: Capture and Fall of Global Institutions’ with @HonTonyAbbott, @HelenClarkNZ, @VikasSwarup, Asle Toje, @HelloKetty1998
Moderated by @NaghmaSahar. Participate in the conversation with #Raisina2021 #RaisinaDialogue
.@NagmaSahar: The pandemic struck at the roots of global order which many believe was already falling. Pre-pandemic global trends seemed redundant. #Raisina2021
.@NagmaSahar: The withering of the pre-pandemic global order is epitomised by the failure of the WHO to play a global leadership role during the pandemic. Other than the WHO, the UN and organisations like the WTO are also struggling for contemporary relevance. #Raisina2021
.@NagmaSahar: Are global bodies independent to function, to serve humanity as they are expected or have they been captured to serve national agendas? #Raisina2021
.@NagmaSahar: Will existing institutions be replaced by a coalition of the willing? #Raisina2021
.@HonTonyAbbott: Global institutions do not work when the pressure is really on, it becomes every country for itself or it tends to be a coalition of the like-minded. The pandemic has made clear the emergence of a new global competition. #Raisina2021
.@HonTonyAbbott: The Quad which brings together the democracies of the Indo-Pacific region is absolutely critically important and yet it is under-developed. There also needs to be an economic angle to the Quad. #Raisina2021
.@HonTonyAbbott: The US should reconsider joining the TPP, and make India interested in it as well and then make it an Indo-Pacific Partnership. #Raisina2021
.@HonTonyAbbott: The Quad needs to be expanded and countries like South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom should be brought in. #Raisina2021
.@HelenClarkNZ: Global organisations are strong as long as they get the support from all the member states. #Raisina2021
.@HelenClarkNZ: APEC could have stepped up more at the time of the ongoing pandemic. #Raisina2021
.@HelenClarkNZ: The member states have not given the WHO enough support, authority it needs to function more efficiently once an emergency is declared. #Raisina2021
@HelloKetty1998: Taiwan is more than willing and capable to assist when it comes to the pandemic if there is another wave. A non-member country like Taiwan would be an important addition to an international organisation like the WHO. #Raisina2021
@HelloKetty1998: International organisations should not be a conduit to a regime’s political aspiration to advance global influence. #Raisina2021
Asle Toje: Institutions that were built after the World War 2 are struggling to various degrees ranging from UN, EU, WHO and this is for the changing power dynamics in the world. #Raisina2021
Asle Toje: The world is now witness to a multipolarity that very much resembles a bipolar system with China and the US being the moving powers. #Raisina2021
Asle Toje: The critique of the WHO is unfair as the WHO has been trying to chart a path between the power interests of the various countries. #Raisina2021
Asle Toje: The power dynamics between the key actors in the international system is making it difficult for international organisations to work in the way it is intended to. #Raisina2021
.@NagmaSahar : What kind of reforms will be helpful for international institutions to get rescued from great power competition? #Raisina2021
.@VikasSwarup: Reformed multilateralism is the need of the hour and for this multilateral institutions need to be made more inclusive, more representative, more democratic and more legitimate. #Raisina2021
.@VikasSwarup: India has been at the forefront for a call to reform multilateral institutions like the UNSC fit for purpose and this is possible only by making developing countries participants and genuine stakeholders in global governance and decision making. #Raisina2021
.@HelenClarkNZ : The longer the reform is delayed, the longer the UNSC will wither as it is not seen as representative of today’s geo-politics. #Raisina2021
Aske Toje: Building coalitions within these established multilateral institutions is the way ahead. #Raisina2021
.@HelloKetty1998 : Member states need to come together to figure out a way to deal effectively with another member state who refuses to adhere to the rules based order. #Raisina2021
.@HonTonyAbbott : The problem is vaccine production. A degree of vaccine favouritism is being noticed and China is using this to take ahead its geo-political interests. #Raisina2021
.@VikasSwarup : The way ahead is the harmonious interface and collaboration between the government and the private sector to speed up vaccine production so that the need of vaccine nationalism does not arise. #Raisina2021

.@teddyboylocsin: The future will be determined by the dynamics of the Indo-Pacific. The Indo-Pacific is undoubtedly the arena for the contemporary version of the Great Game, where multiple players with diverse ambitions display their strategic skills.
#Raisina2021
.@teddyboylocsin: Southeast Asian nations remain skeptical of Great Power schemes that seek to drag in ASEAN nations to larger quarrels and far bigger ambitions that Southeast Asia as a region of peace do not share.
