In 1971 an unlikely pairing of a black community organizer and a member of the Ku Klux Klan were asked to co-chair a “charrette” - a 10-day meeting – to address school desegregation in Durham, North Carolina. #velshi
4/14
Ann Atwater and C.P. Ellis were that unlikely pairing, each chosen for the same reason - because their connection to the matter made them prominent and relevant voices for each side of the contentious issue. #velshi
5/14
Both were invested in the outcome, as both also had children in Durham schools. Ann Atwater was said to be a no-nonsense black activist who distrusted all white people and wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. C.P. Ellis was a leader in the local chapter of the Klan. #velshi
6/14
They didn’t really like each other. But they had a job to do & a future to embrace, and their initial anger toward one another morphed into a sort of understanding. On the final day of the 10-day “charrette”, Ellis addressed a crowd that included other Klan members. #velshi
7/14
Ellis announced that he thought it was better to desegregate the schools. He then ripped up his KKK membership card. That was a Hollywood ending. In fact, those real-life events were portrayed in a recent Hollywood movie called “The Best of Enemies”. #velshi
8/14
The quaint idea of a “charrette” 50 years ago – putting people with opposing ideas in a room for ten days to work it all out. Except it’s actually what our democracy is based upon, and we are doing a terrible job with it right now. #velshi
9/14
Our ability to have constructive discussions about real issues slips away daily as anxiety and fear seep in. There’s less common ground and less common wisdom. Discourse has been replaced by gaslighting, trolling and zero-sum thinking. #velshi
10/14
Anti-trans bills, new voting laws, radical politicians - everything is a cultural wedge. We are wired to defend our values and principles and personal beliefs from anyone or anything we feel is attacking them. #velshi
11/14
That’s the ONLY common theme left - everyone feels like everyone is attacking them. Where there are gaps, there are no longer bridges. Where there were once sides that tried to work together there are now infinite corners into which like-minded thinkers escape. #velshi
12/14
We don’t even agree that there are – or should be – two or more sides to an issue. There’s your side, and there’s the wrong side. Ann Atwater and C.P. Ellis could have gone that way but didn’t. #velshi
13/14
It’s true the Klansman Ellis’s view evolved, but Atwater made the choice not to disengage, isolate or dispose of him, despite views he held that were abhorrent to her. In fact, they remained friends until the day he died. She delivered a eulogy at his funeral. #velshi
14/14
For those of us whose goal is a more inclusive society – we will not get there by leaving people with whom we disagree out of the cart. As distasteful as it feels, working “en charrette” may be the only way to create durable change. #velshi

One thing many of us have learned in the last year is how productive we can be when we aren’t spending an hour or two commuting to and from work. The pandemic has made us efficient, if nothing else. #velshi
2/12
All this working from home didn’t break the internet so, with a laptop & a phone or 2, we sure get a lot done. In fact, even before Covid, the American worker was about as productive as we have ever been. #velshi
3/12
As business picks up & unemployment falls, all that productivity is going to be a problem. It’s an economic concept but it’s Sunday so I won’t give you equations and stuff. #velshi

53 years ago today Martin Luther King Jr. was shot by a white racist as he stood on the second floor balcony outside his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee. #velshi
2/13
King’s dream, that all people be judged by the content of their character, and not by the color of their skin, is a fight that continues today and was the reason King received a Nobel Peace Prize just three years earlier. He was celebrated with high honors in NYC. #velshi
3/13
The reception in his hometown, Atlanta, however, was a different story. It was 1964 Atlanta was still a self-segregated city - so plans for an interracial dinner honoring King were not well supported by the city's top business leaders. Tickets weren’t selling. #velshi

During an interview on Fox, the now Senate minority leader said: "I don't believe I have spoken with him [President Biden] since he was sworn in.” #velshi

Mitch McConnell’s office later confirmed that wasn’t accurate since McConnell himself told reporters just last month that he and Biden had spoken about issues in Myanmar, the budget process and the coronavirus relief bill. #velshi

McConnell, seeming to want to score some points said: “there has been no effort whatsoever by the president or the administration to do anything in the political center." #velshi

While we await more information about the recent fatal shootings of 8 people, 6 of whom were Asian women, in GA, we know enough about the chilling effect the killings have had on Asians in American, especially in light of the recent surge in violence against them. #velshi
2/12
None of this is new. Anti-Asian racism has a long and troubling history, including the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 - a law specifically designed to prevent Chinese American laborers from entering the country. #velshi
3/12
To this day it’s the only law ever passed to prevent all members of a specific ethnic or national group from immigrating here. Scapegoating Asian Americans for public health issues is not new, either. #velshi

There’s a special relationship between a shark and a pilot fish. On the surface it appears friendly, but it’s better described as “mutualistic,” where each species benefits from the relationship. #velshi
2/11
In this case, the pilot fish gets protection against predators while feeding off fragments of food in the shark’s teeth which, in turn, helps the shark avoid potentially deadly parasites. An unlikely pairing - a Pilot Fish and a shark - but together they work. #velshi
3/11
That seems to be the best analogy for the relationship between Lindsey Graham and Donald Trump. And if it wasn’t already clear - Trump is the shark and Graham is the pilot fish in this scenario. #velshi

Let me tell you a story, that is based in the truth.
They say they’re cancelling a doctor. Cancelling Dr. Seuss!

How these rumors began should not fill you with shocks.
As you can probably imagine, many started on Fox.

#velshi

The REAL story is this, so gather round and take note:
Dr. Seuss wasn’t cancelled for something he wrote.

Theodore Geisel was Seuss’ real name.
But since creating his works, the world sure has changed.

Those who manage his legacy have taken a look.
And to preserve his integrity, they’ve deleted some books.

You see, in the 30’s and 40’s, and for decades thereafter,
Stereotypes were common, and often brought laughter.
