Thread [#SuperLeague]
What it is - 12 European clubs have come together to announce a new competition called the Super League governed by its founding clubs. Arsenal, Atletico, Chelsea, Barca, Inter, Juve, Liverpool, City, United, Madrid and Spurs are the 12 founders
Along with the current 12, 3 more clubs are set to join them as founders making it 15 in all.
How it's going to work - 20 teams (15 founders + qualifying mechanism for 5 teams to qualify annually). Midweek fixtures with clubs playing their domestic leagues
Which is "the heart of the club game". Competition starts in August, 2 groups of 10 each and both home and away fixtures. Top 3 from each group qualify with the 4th and 5th from both groups playing a playoff round for remaining QF positions.
Remaining knockouts are all 2 legged with the final being held as a one-off fixture in May.
Why ESL - The founders say it'll provide significant economic growth and support for European football and also higher quality matches and resources for the overall Football pyramid.
Why it's messed up:- 1) It kills the concept of open sport - Currently the UCL and UEL are solely merit based qualification systems meaning if your team has a wonder year like say Leicester (2016) you qualify for the #CL and added financial resources and whatnot
Every #Football fan positively loves it when a dark horse makes it to the UCL and this would kill that dream for both fans and clubs.
2)Kills concept of equal representation - Currently each country has a limited number of spots for #UCL and #UEL allowing the smaller nations
To participate in these comps via qualification as well as merit. #ESL kills that concept with their 15 founding clubs playing every year with only 5 rotating and furthermore there's an unequal division of clubs per country ( Eng - 6, Spain - 3 etc)
"Improving quality", "Top clubs" - #Arsenal sit in 10th in the PL, #Spurs are in 7th having been knocked out of the Europa League. Goes to show that rather than top clubs these are rich clubs selling out for money.
Clubs which have actually performed well would be denied the opportunity and financial resources of playing in the continental leagues as a result of this. There has not been a criteria for selecting Super League clubs and yet they say top club, best in the world but somehow-
#Bayern the team which won the sextuple last year and #PSG last year's UCL runners aren't a part of this as they have dignity and actually respect Football. Why is it that a mediocre team which drew with #Fulham yesterday gets access to 3.5 billion USD and participation
Whereas the world champions, UCL runners, Leicester who have consistently finished in the top 6 in the past years don't ? As a #ManUnited fan, I'm deeply disappointed and hurt by this.
The creation of this league would effectively kill football.
