This will seem like a very odd decision for anyone familiar with LGB Alliance's social media profile. Taking a first glance at @ChtyCommission's reasoning here's what strikes me as key. Others may have more insight...
Firstly, it seems that much of LGB Alliance's historic social media output runs directly contrary to some their started charitable aims, notably the fact that they spend a lot of time denying and denigrating #bisexuality. Thread:
This ought to have been a red flag for the @ChtyCommission as in section 41, they specifically commented on whether or not the LGB Alliance was a "sham" and, in section 42, concluded that there was "no evidence".
This begs the question: what evidence do they need, exactly?
I know a large part of the concerns raised about LGB Alliance related to their #transphobia; the reason I'm picking on their problematic position on #bisexuality is to demonstrate that they are failing, even on their own terms. This had not previously been raised as an objection!
Apparently (although seemingly in relation to trans concerns), the @ChtyCommission did express concerns but LGB Alliance promised to pay nicely in future.
So, where next?
Painful as it sounds, I'm not sure reporting them for #transphobia, while still important, will be very fruitful as we can see how it was dealt with in this reasoning document.
LGB Alliance are logically correct (even if it's not what happens in practice) to say LGB support is not anti-trans per se. This then allows them to campaign on trans-unfriendly issues "on behalf of LGB", which gives them legal cover because it pits one minority against another.
Therefore, the bar for success then raising issues of #transphobia is significantly higher.
Of course it's important to continue raising any issues of #transphobia but we need to be realistic about how likely those complaints are to make any impact.
Where LGB Alliance is on much weaker ground is on issues of #biphobia, precisely because they purport to stand in support of the #bisexual community and yet have a comms history of doing the exact opposite.
If they can be shown to be continuing to display #biphobia as a charity, ostensibly created to promote the rights of the #bisexual community (among others), then that adds a lot of weight to the argument that the purported aims of the charity are indeed a "sham".
In summary, the way to protect #trans, #queer, and others from the malign influence of LGB Alliance is to make especially sure we are reporting them where they fail on their *own* terms, specifically, on #biphobia. 🏳️🌈 🏳️⚧️
Adding this link for exactly the same reasoning: the way to protect #Trans & #Queer, etc, is to be especially conscientious in reporting LGB Alliance where they attack the very communities they claim to support, whether that's #Lesbian, #Gay, or #Bisexual.
