(1) There was an officer involved shooting (OIS) in Columbus, Ohio today. The deceased was a 15 year old black girl, identified by family members - Police have yet to provide her name to the public.

My comments on this statement from the local Mayor:
(2) As you would expect, people who support the #BlackLivesMatter movement are criticizing Columus, Ohio Mayor Andrew Ginther for aspects of his statement. I took screenshots of it:
(3) Let's go through each point:

"a young woman tragically lost her life"

She's 15, so he should have said girl, female, or person.

For now, the audience holds the Mayor's PD responsible, so he should not have said "lost her life." He should be more neutral at this point.
(4) "BCI is on the scene conducting"

I assume this is Bureau of Criminal Investigations or something. His audience is nationwide, so he shd avoid acronyms. In fact, he should have tweeted out an image of the statement, then he can use more characters and it's not split in half.
(5) "an independent investigation"

A potentially loaded term at this time. There's a ton of ways this message could have been drafted better. All a Mayor can guarantee is that such an investigation is intended to be independent. The judge of that is the public, later on.
(6) Some of the Mayor's critics complain about the use of the term "[officer] involved shooting."

Early on, it is the most appropriate term, in my opinion. It's neutral, especially when all we know for sure is that there was a shooting and an officer was involved in it.
(7) "We will share information that we can as soon as it becomes available."

Who's "we," Mr Mayor? You personally? Your staff? Your PD, which was involved?

Better to be precise about who will speak on your behalf next. And, it should be the investigating department.
(8) He qualified the promise with "that we can." He can use this to justify not releasing certain info.

Which is fine, except that he tries to score brownie points by saying "as soon as it becomes available."

A garbled sentence, probably drafted by an incompetent PR adviser.
(9) But it's the final sentence that really does the damage:

"I’m asking for residents to remain calm and allow BCI to gather the facts."

20 minutes before the Chauvin verdict was read to the court. On a day of already heightened tensions around the country.
(10) There's no link between remaining "calm" & allowing investigators to "gather the facts" either.

They can gather them regardless They already started, as the Mayor himself admits, with the video footage.

I don't expect "calm." I expect non violence, bc it makes it worse.
(11) Elected officials like @MayorGinther should use pre-drafted statements that have been well thought-through. It's not impossible for us PR advisers to have a number of options ready for emergencies.

Here's what I would have recommended instead:
(12) "Police have informed me that an individual has died following an officer-involved shooting (OIS).

I have directed officials to update me on this case as much as possible. As per city policy, the [name of independent body] is responsible for investigating any OIS here.
(13) "Like all of you, I want this case properly and fully investigated and anyone found at fault to be held accountable under the law. I am informed that bodycam footage was recorded, and I expect that to be made public as soon as possible...
(14) "I will leave no stone unturned as the facts of this case are uncovered and, as always, will make any recommendations for change a priority. I encourage peaceful protest and I intend to join in a public vigil later tonight. I ask everyone to gather peacefully and...
(15) " ... to remember that while protest is necessary and is protected, there is no justification for violence. I have reminded officials of the need to protect peaceful protesters and enforce the law fairly."

Or, words to that effect. I wrote that off the top of my head.
(16) As someone who has worked in government, it's painful watching people get it so wrong these days, whether it's pandemic response, police shooting aftermath, or whatever else.

The least they can do is draft better statements than this one was.
(17) OK the bodycam footage of the shooting of #makhiabryant is out. I comment on it in this thread:

(1) Thread: Russian & Chinese involvement in US politics.

When Democrat and Never Trump politicians, activists, and commentators claimed the Trump campaign had "colluded with" the government of Russia, that framing of the issue made their efforts less likely to succeed. Image
(2) Whether or not credible evidence of Trump-Russia collusion would ever be presented to the public, using this word in the investigation was a mistake. Trump & co needed only to persuade supporters that Trump had not actively taken up Russian offers of assistance.
(3) Because the claim of active Trump-Russia collusion was brought up in nearly every circumstance during the Trump term of office, his supporters switched off and turned the weapon around to point it at Democrats and Never Trump folk.

Then they increasingly focused on China.

(1) Columbus, Ohio: Officer-involved shooting death of 15 year old Ms #MakhiaBryant, 4/20/2021.

(2) Yes, the suspect appeared to hold a knife, while fighting with another girl. (The residence is a foster home and fighting had broken out.)

However, you can hear the same level of screaming/fighting noise after she is shot, so I wonder if other cops were covering that?
(3) Like, usually when people hear shots they stop and seek a place of safety. I want to know how many cops were there and if some were focusing on the other people still fighting. What if one of them turned a gun on the cops? They should have been ready for that possibility.

What a gorgeous, special picture of the most photographed couple in the world, having (probably) climbed a 1607ft hill near Balmoral at the age of 82 and 77, respectively.

Good morning, UK brothers and sisters. Today our national grandpa is laid to rest. #ThankYouPhilip🇬🇧🇳🇿
The above pic would've been taken around August 2003 (the annual visit to Balmoral.)

Behind the cam was their favorite daughter-in-law Sophie Wessex, who would give birth to Louise on 8 November that year. Do you remember? Mum & baby could have died. Eternally thankful.🙏
Now Louise is all grown up and viewing the floral tributes displayed inside the castle grounds. Staff moved them each night from the gates, to try to discourage people from gathering during the pandemic.

(1) Thread 2: FedEx Indy mass shooting April 15, 2021

I use threading to keep track of my tweets on a subject. My threads about this incident include breaking news about what happened, and my thoughts on wider policy issues.

Thread 1:
(2) Of course, gun laws ARE relevant when discussing a mass shooting incident. It's just that most of what is said is factually inaccurate and/or irrelevant concerning why the shooting occurred, and how best to reduce the risk of future harm.
(3) Examples of typical factual inaccuracies:

Automatic or "machine" guns are illegal outside the military. If you think you heard one, it was probably a SEMI-automatic gun.

"Assault rifles" don't exist. Use other terms for them.

(1) FedEx shooting, Indianapolis, 4/15/2021.

Police say at least 8 people are dead in a mass shooting at a FedEx facility near the airport. At least 8 others were transported to area hospitals, while multiple others went to other hospitals. The alleged shooter is now dead.
(3) Some recent words of mine concerning the prevention and reduction of mass shooting related harm:

(1) Video released in the last hour. Lori Lightfoot "calling for peace" in this way will lead to the opposite result. Actions speak louder than words. Will the police be properly equipped & supported tonight?

RIP Adam Toledo. IMO the case that said it all was Elijah McClain...
(2) Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying one tragedy is more important than another. Whichever side of this issue you're on, it's advisable to learn about as many recent cases as you can. The details might surprise you.

IMO we all want to see less violence in the aftermath.
(3) The far left want to "burn it all down" & in some cities they partly achieve that, at least figuratively. The far right also want to figuratively burn it all down, in terms of the country's institutions like the DOJ, FBI.

The more violent you are, the less support you get. ImageImage
