We are in the midst of a highly charged public health campaign without precedent in modern history where measures are extreme and without scientific foundation. 1/
We are moving down a very dangerous path that deeply troubles me as a scientist. My tweets are designed to mitigate this trajectory, one pointing out the tragic history of public health in the dark times of the holocaust. 2/

I appreciate that some felt this parallel is too strong and I do apologize for that, particularly given the abbreviated format of twitter. 3/
But make no mistake, society is in very deep trouble and we desperately need to slow down and carefully think. This public health campaign is doing great damage to our open wonderful society. 4/
I'm always open to broader deeper discussion of data, theory and thoughts. I welcome all and block none in the spirit of serious academic engagement, as best achieved on twitter. 5/
I close by saying "Think of where we were a year ago and where we are today as a society." Would you have predicted that? End.

A kind thanks to everyone who reached out with support, especially those unable to speak publicly on C19 policy. I'm a bit surprised but clearly many sense something is deeply wrong in Canada. 1/
As an academic, I believe in owning my thoughts. I realize my comparators are sometimes too strong and need tempering. I apologize for that. But lets be clear, C19 has revealed that Canada is on a deeply troubled path and public health is driving that. 2/
I knew I would be targeted when speaking out. I'm not naive and I know how this game works. But C19 data is stunning clear and our policies are neither aligned with, nor effective for, the viral threat. It is draining this country of its richness day by day. 3/

A few weeks ago, we put forward the idea that short term issues were arising with vaccination as a correlation between vaccination, cases and hospitalization was observable (Canada). A similar trend can be seen around the world. A couple more examples. 1/
Here is one from the Seychelles, a island state with no previous sign of C19 spread. 2/ Image
Here is a more interesting one from Pakistan which shows traits similar to Canada. 3/ Image

A simple pointed question was asked of me yesterday. Does the C19 response end and when so? I'm not clairvoyant but I'm going with yes and relatively soon. Lets go through the reasoning. 1/
First, I'm not being glib when I say that Canada's C19 response is the largest social policy disaster in Canadian history. It's collosal in breath, damaging every aspect of society. Sit for 5 mins and ponder that fact. Let it really sink in. 2/
Now ponder why our response has been so disastrous. Is it the virus itself? The answer is a resounding no. Medical science knows respiratory viruses and while this strain was new and of some concern, it isn't unprecedented. 3/

For a year, many have publicly warned our blinkered public health officials not to mix politics, fear and vaccine development. Yet they did and now, that lack of critical thinking has left Canada with a Faustian bargain. 1/
That bargain involves deploying rushed vaccines, knowing to increase short term illness, hospitalization and death in a fraction of people, for attainment of longer term herd protection. 2/
You can see this bargain play out in Canadian data. First we have this beautiful graph showing the strong relationship between vaccination and cases. Fortuitously, the coupling to death is weaker. 3/

One positive aspect of Canada's bungled C19 response has been the number of academic, govt and private sector economists/analysts who have reach out. Steeped in rigorous quantitative analysis, many couldn't square the data with public health rhetoric...1/
In the early months, this conversation was one side, with me explaining biological concepts and placing them in context with data graphs. This relationship has flipped as its clear the C19 response is one of economics and politics.....2/
My education in economics was markedly enhanced yesterday as I listened to my new found colleagues dismantle the federal budget and make comparisons to the 1990s. One went so far as to contact a real estate agent, to put his house up for sale.....3/

Its another Monday and your weekly reminder you are living through the largest social policy blunder in Canadian history.

But good news, the political class now recognizes this and is actively working to shift the blame.

Lets consider the antics.... 1/
We have on the one hand, Doug Ford and his cabinet who are in full hibernation mode, hoping it all blows over. His caucus is counting the days till they can retire with full pension.....2/
On the other, we have the federal liberals, who initiated this debacle, and are surveying the landscape to see where the next load of virtue signaling can be dropped. The prime minister's hair is combed and Minister Freeland has bought new t-shirts and shoes to match....3/
