Live for something greater than yourself

‘Unless a kernel of wheat is planted…it remains alone.’
John 12:24 NLT
1. Jesus said, ‘Unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil & dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels.’ Someone has estimated that 1 kernel of wheat will produce a stalk bearing 3 heads of wheat. In each head there are 15 - 35 kernels, altogether..
2...producing close to a 100 kernels from a stalk. After they're planted, these kernels will produce 10,000 kernels. When those are replanted, they'll produce 1m kernels. And if you keep going, you'll cover the whole earth with wheat! It's amazing what 1 person can do when they..
3..commit their life to Christ & start where they are. D.L. Moody once said, ‘The world has yet to see what God can do through a man who is yielded to him.’ He decided to be that person & ended up impacting the world for Christ. When Peter, James & John met Jesus, their goal in..
4...life was to make a living. Then Jesus invited them to follow Him and make a difference. And today He’s inviting you to do the same thing. He’s inviting you to find a need that no one is meeting & give yourself to it. He’s asking you to find a cause greater than self-interest,
5...namely His cause & pour your life into it. When Jesus asked the disciples to leave their jobs & security, He was turning their world upside down. But when they said yes to Him, they became so successful their enemies accused them of ‘turning the world upside down’ (Acts 17:6)

The Naija Mindset

I recall when I came to London in 2009. My dad was at Heathrow to welcome me. He bought an Oyster card for me. The card is your ticket to ride on all London buses and trains. You can buy a weekly, monthly, daily or ‘Pay As You Go’ pass.
The Oyster card opens the barriers before you board the train or exit the train station. So, as my dad used his ticket, the barriers opened, he went through and just before it would close, I quickly followed him behind and passed through.

I don’t know why I did that.
But my first guess would be, it was the Naija sharp guy thinking that made me pass quickly without paying. My dad was terribly upset and asked me to return and pay.

A few months later, I got on a bus and with the same mindset of a ‘sharp guy’, I didn’t pay. Normally, there are..

Ours is a largely dyfunctional society. A friend who relocated back from Canada called it "organised chaos". But don't be deceived, we like our dyfunction the way it is. Because it allows us to rile against the system while at the same time take advantage of it when it suits us.
A Nigerian driving one way will still wail against the problem of traffic congestion in Lagos. A Nigerian will create a third lane on the curb from a two lane road while still complaining about the quality of the road. He hates dyfunction but will not hesitate to be dyfunctional.
A Nigerian will complain about the dyfunction of govt officials not respecting Covid19 guidelines they set themselves while he is arranging for a fake Covid test result to enable him travel out without testing. You see, he hates dyfunction, but has no qualms in being dyfunctional

Dealing with our sin

‘Against You, You only, have I sinned.’
Psalm 51:4 NKJV
1. We need a new way of looking at sin; a fresh understanding of it. John Ortberg writes: ‘All sin involves denial. It carries with it a certain moral myopia – near-sightedness.’ And the only way to see it clearly is through the eyes of the One we’ve sinned against.
2. The psalmist prayed, ‘Against You, You only, have I sinned.’ A Christian college professor put it like this: ‘I’m nice to my students; respectful to my colleagues; love my family; don’t steal, commit adultery, use drugs or swear & I floss regularly. But when I look at myself..

As a young teenage Christian, I used to go with a crew on preaching runs from Mile 2 to CMS. We'll take turns to stand in Molue Buses to preach the gospel of Christ. Not once did we think what we were doing was violating the rights of other passengers. We felt entitled to do it.
We felt the gospel of Jesus was too important that it was worth interrupting the lives of others to save them. It didn't matter whether they wanted to hear what we had to say or agreed it with it, we felt a force bigger than them had granted us permission to assault their day.
Never did it occur to us that we can preach the gospel and at the same time respect the rights of others not to be disturbed by it. It's the same mindset that makes some believe they can invade a community with megaphones to preach early in the morning or place speakers outdoors.

The Power to Change

‘I will strengthen you and help you.’
Isaiah 41:10 NIV
1. We go to seminars and conferences looking for a painless cure by which our lives can be zapped & changed. We go on diets. We join health clubs and our enthusiasm runs strong for about two weeks. Then we fall back into the same old rut. We don’t change. We read self-help books,
2...but the problem with self-help books is that they tell us what to do but can’t give us the power to do it. We are told things like: ‘Get rid of all your bad habits. Be positive; don’t be negative.’ But how? Where do we get the power to change? The word ‘power’ occurs 57 times
