Proud to share our guidance for supporting #transgender#students created as part of our Student Health Advisory Council's #LGBT subcommittee. (Highlights in this thread, but make sure to read the entire doc!)
1.) Educate Yourself - Make sure you personally are aware of the false rhetoric and fear driving this legislation. @GBPFLAG's article below is a good starting point.
2.) Amplify Accurate Information
Share publications and influencers who are speaking out against these attacks. @chasestrangio often shares good information.
3.) Monitor Oppression
Keep track of states where healthcare and/or athletic bans have passed or are currently being considered. At the moment, this includes 35 states.
5.) Reach Out Directly to #TransStudents
If #transgender#students have shared that aspect of their identity with you, reach out to them privately to let them know you are thinking of them and want to support them.
6.) Join a SHAC #LGBT Task Force Meeting
(Or find a comparable organization in your community if you aren't a #Lexington community member.) See our Year 3 report below to find out what we've been up to!
While it left very little time for personal processing, I'm proud that our leadership team worked for hours last night to prepare guidance for staff today. These are a few of the points. (LPS educators, your building teams have shared/will be sharing more specifics!)
Name what happened. The events of January 6, 2021 were violent and unlawful. This is not an opportunity for exploring "both sides."
Follow your students' lead. They will tell you how much or how little they want to process. Always make allowance for individuals who differ from their peers; make space for those who aren't ready to talk or those who want to continue talking.
