It’s well known that our society is infected by concepts which make us unhappy, damage our communities and endanger the biological world. These concepts infect us, we become contagious, then we infect those around us.

We know the sort of concepts they are. They look like this:
–You need more
–Take, don’t give
–Winner takes all
–Greed is good
–Appearances matter
–Those in power deserve their power
–Those with wealth deserve their wealth
–It’s your fault you’re poor

Some of these concepts simply misinterpret Darwinism. Some are demographic falsehoods. Some are empirically false. All lead us to a dangerous outcome for our species.
I consider them viruses–contagious & malign concepts which are part of a mind plague that’s harming us all.

SASAC's Hindutva Harassment Field Manual offers a section specifically for students -- whether they are witnessing a Hindutva attack, concerned about hate on campus, or just curious.

#THREAD #Hindutva #students #diversity #inclusion #campus
This section opens with a brief definition of Hindutva (for a fuller definition:…)

Hindutva is a far right political ideology. It can seem far away when you're attending college in the US, but Hindutva places pressure on students' self-expression.
The section offers a series of questions that can help interested students identify Hindutva influences on their campus and the harms posed to the diversity and inclusivity we all seek to cultivate on college campuses.

A #government out of control
The commitment that the #UK government gives 0.7% of its GDP as overseas aid is enshrined in law. #Johnson’s government decided to cut this to 0.5%, but didn’t need to put this to parliament because the cut was supposed to be temporary.
A large number of Conservative MPs were unhappy with this, and wanted to use parliament to reverse this cut. The parliament’s #speaker ruled their attempt invalid, but requested the #government to allow a vote on the issue. The government refused.

“The battle for Britain has begun”, #Tory MPs declare war on woke
A group of #Tory MPs has declared war on woke forces seeking to upend “British values” and society.
Forty-odd lawmakers have published a pamphlet warning wile ideology, symbolised by movements
like Black Lives Matter and Extinction Rebellion “represent a profound threat” to our social order.
The pamphlet, entitled, #Conservative Thinking for a Post-Liberal Age also takes aim at Gordon Brown’s Equality Act, which the MPs argue goes too far
in trying to clamp down on discrimination at work.Bacon let rip in an eviscerating attack against woke warriors, whose ideology he described as “destructive, totalitarian, divisive, negative and antidemocratic,” adding that it can be defeated so long as we

Proud to share our guidance for supporting #transgender #students created as part of our Student Health Advisory Council's #LGBT subcommittee. (Highlights in this thread, but make sure to read the entire doc!)

1.) Educate Yourself - Make sure you personally are aware of the false rhetoric and fear driving this legislation. @GBPFLAG's article below is a good starting point.

2.) Amplify Accurate Information
Share publications and influencers who are speaking out against these attacks. @chasestrangio often shares good information.

1/ This week, a video of five female students of Oreyo Senior Grammar School, Igbogbo Ikorodu, Lagos State, smoking shisha in what is presumably a private home went viral.
2/ In the video, the students are in school uniform, so they either sneaked out of school or they are day students who detoured after school to someone’s place for a hookah smoking session rather than return home.
3/ I read somewhere that the girls have been suspended. I've never been in favour of removing students from the classroom unless they are violent (and/or disruptive). Suspensions (and expulsions) are often not effective forms of punishment (a discussion for another day).

Announcement from @fordnation sank my heart today. As an ER doctor, person of color and #Scarborough native, I feel defeated 😢. The measures are not going to get wave 3 under control. #BIPOC #ERdoc @SHNcares @torontolife @JustinTrudeau @SCMirror 1/
When I landed as an #immigrant in #Canada, my life started in #Scarborough. My parents (#heros) struggled to find jobs that matched their education. That didn't stop them from working hard / hustling even if it meant 2 jobs at times to keep bills paid and food on the table. 2/
My family lived in an apt building that had mostly racialized/middle-low income families (#affordability). Not much social distancing when large crowds wait for elevators (#EssentialWorkers) or use the shared laundry facilities. This pandemic brings back those vivid memories 3/

The most menacing aspect of #StandardizedTesting is the way it trains kids to fear making mistakes by labeling & shaming. Misunderstandings should be opportunities for breakthroughs in comprehension, but the tests teach that miscalculations are perverse transgressions.
Playwright Oscar Wilde made a magnificent observation in his novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" when he wrote, “Most people die of a sort of creeping common sense, and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one’s mistakes.”
Oscar Wilde understood that creativity cannot exist without mistakes, & without creativity life lacks meaning. Kids live in fear of getting low test scores because they are used to label & shame at best—& sometimes carry extreme high stakes (closing schools, denying graduation).

Someone I know will soon become a F1 parent! (F1=student visa in the US).

So I offered to share a few pointers I had put together year ago for students moving to the US for higher studies.

Figured why not share it here.

Before you leave:
1.Scan every single certificate (mark sheet degree cert, birth, aadhar, Pan etc) and save in a secure place. Easiest is to open an email address only for documents. Make 4 sets of copies, 2 with your parents 2 with you.
2.Spend AS MUCH time with your parents as possible. It still will feel inadequate once you are there.
3.Buy multiple sweaters, jackets, scarves, wollen caps, gloves, wollen socks etc.
