When an author breaks his reader!

This is where we left off, yesterday, after just 8 tweets in my thread, on page 33 of From Dictatorship To Democracy by Gene Sharp, book number 4 on my list.
2) There's a small story from yesterday morning I've decided to share today. Re-reading the list from the section: Centers of democratic power, broke me. Not as in completely! But analytically. The reality of Sharp's point was larger than my mind could handle.
3) No, it didn't help that I had a huge coaching day encroaching, but time limits was not the problem. Mind limits was. Two passages from the New Testament exploded in my mind, and exploded my mind itself. There were Luke 14 and John 6.
4) So there I was, innocently attempting to imbibe Sharp's guidance, and these 2 chapters impinge, inescapably on my mind. It's one of the great problems of reading the bible. We so often discover we need one passage in order to interpret another.
5) On his page 33, you see above that Sharp lists out 13 different parts of society, all of whom empower the government. Often, these parts of society empower dictators. That, in fact, is where America is today. Our entire society empowers the Biden tyranny.
6) All would likely have been well even still, but I got confused between John Chapter 6, and John Chapter 14. So, what's really going on is I have 3 different chapters of the New Testament in mind, not 2, and that is a confusing moment for anyone!
7) Let's break all that apart, slowly, now. The first passage I needed was actually John 14:6. "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
8) This passage ties directly to the passage about hating one's family members and such in a straightforward way. Christ teaches that in order to find one's path to the Father through him, one must abandon everything that might be of greater worth.
9) Luke 14: 26 states, "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple."
10) In order to protect my mind from being broken again, we're going leave John 6 alone, now. If you enjoy having your mind broken, go read it, slowly, and try to master every idea there. Then try to tie them to John 14 and Luke 14, and then FDTD page 33. Whew...
11) Letting completely go of John 6, turn with me to how one must hate his mother and father if he is to be a disciple of Christ's. As Christ is the one and only way to the Father, one must hate one's father to let go the grasp of the world and claim one's path to redemption.
12) We have to admit a problem. The word hate is a problem. Regardless of how we analyze or explain the word, there it is, right there in the bible, and in Christ's own voice. Wanna be redeemed? Hate your parents. This is not an easy teaching. It must be admitted.
13) Upon a couple of day's worth of meditation, I think we can square this circle. As your earthly father is imperfect, he will at times misdirect you away from the path of truth and light. As your Heavenly Father is perfect, you must obliterate all such obstacles.
14) My analysis tells me this. Here in the 21st century, we use words with a type of brittle absolute. He who hates his father cannot and does not love his father. I suspect that in 1st century Palestine or 17th century England, words were not quite so brittle.
15) Had Christ had the patience and been in the mood, He might have said, hate what your father does wrong, and when he leads you astray, while you love all that your father does right and of course love his person even when you most hate his deeds.
16) We have always been told you love the sinner while you hate the sin. It is this that I believe we require to comprehend these passages and bring them back to our study of Sharp's guidance.
17) Let's take a single example from Sharp's list of 13 types of organizations that a dictator requires for his security in power. I chose musical groups. There is a rap song you should look up: Let's Take Down The CCP. I won't post the link for this reason...
18) When I posted it some many months ago, Twitter put me into a 12-hour penalty box. I tried twice more in various ways, for a total of 36 hours' time out. I finally discovered what Twitter had done. They had deceitfully labeled my post as, get this, revenge porn.
19) But you can easily find it, just put it into your favorite search engine. It is an awesome music video. But as you can tell, there are vast powers in this nation that will suppress music's right of free speech by many various and devious means.
20) Now leap back with me to the 1960s and early 70s. What was the power of music in attacking our nation over the Vietnam War? How far reaching was that impact? Now leap again right back to today. What if Biden is a Tyrant were a musical theme, now?
21) You of course realize that music radio, like all the ancient newspapers, has been taken over by the great corporate vested interests of the Swamp. We have allowed all of our media to fall under their evil sway. We have failed to hate our media fathers. Stick with me.
22) Trump, and his Fake News attack, is our leader and thank goodness for that. We knew that the MSM was terrible. But we did not mount up a successful attack against them. Trump did, as far as he could, which was pretty amazing.
23) So let's look at real hatred. Why don't we fund and lead protesters to camp outside the doors of the MSM? Why don't we flood local music radio stations with Biden Is A Tyrant songs and clamor until they're played on air? We don't hate our media fathers enough.
Musical interlude. I'll be back shortly...I promise!
24) Well gang, here you go! I decided to write a smash hit, 15-second, 3-chord, 1-line music video for you called, obviously, Biden Is A Tyrant. For you musical and political enjoyment I offer...
25) Now seriously, let me ask. Do you know your church pastor, personally? Do you know if he or she supports Biden, and fails to realize that a massive landslide election has been stolen? Now, let's assume your pastor knows perfectly well. Yes?
26) Dropping down a level. Does your pastor believe in the statement: God bless America? Let's assume yes again. Now then, would your pastor allow mine, or of course a vastly superior song to be performed in your church? If not, do you see the problem?
27) This is the real point of Sharp's Chapter 3. At every level of society, power is siphoned into the government. Obedience is either supported or opposed. Dictators thrive on silent support, on the passive acceptance of a cowardly population, ignorant of its power.
28) Another quick example. Let's picture you as a pillar of your community and an avid golfer. Can you picture yourself sitting there in your posh place, saying, what do you think about Biden stealing the election? Or what do you think we should do about the stolen election?
29) Any place where we might fear to be censured for such simple declarations and questions is a literal space in which the tyranny of Joe Biden is supported, either passively or directly.
30) We're not done with Chapter 3 yet, but at least, we will be released from the brain-breaking page 33 tomorrow.

I say "whew" again. And #BidenIsATyrant.

FDTD – Chapter 3: Whence Comes the Power – Part 3

We won't have time to get today's analysis done in the morning. I hate that, but I will get it done later today. Diving in, we have two of the hardest passages of the New Testament to contemplate.
2) Here's a single verse to capture the horrendous point:

Luke 14: 26

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
3) If I have the time, later today, I'll look up this verse in Strong's Concordance and find the Greek or Aramaic word translated into the term "hate." Turning to the original language always helps. But, simply hearing it in King James English matters, also.

FDTD – Chapter 3: Whence Comes the Power – Part 2

Although I knew it before, I learned all over again this morning why authors so often write their books sitting inside a fabulous library somewhere. I spend a lot of money on books but NOT this much!
2) Today's essay is constructed around Sharp's footnote numbers 8, 9, & 10. The bad news is that I was unable to find either free online PDFs or inexpensive copies of Deutsch or Machiavelli. The good news is I found a $1.20 version of Austin!
3) Sometimes, just having the paragraph before and the paragraph following a given quote transforms your understanding of the quote itself. It's more than just context, it's also momentum. What is the author's real goal, his destination? What are his values and assumptions?

FDTD – Chapter 3: Whence Comes the Power?

Once again, I'd change the Chapter title. I'd put "cometh" in place of "comes." For those who believe in Divine Law, power cometh from God. Nice King James feel, right? And what a question! ImageImageImageImage
2) I haven't decided yet if I can get away with just one essay on this chapter, or if more may be needed. I can tell you this, you WANT to read along with me. Sharp is a strategic writer, and this chapter is a strategic turning point in the book.
3) While I read this chapter the 1st time some weeks back, I wasn't surprised but I was pleased that Sharp quotes my man Machiavelli. This is positively (maybe even dispositively) Sharp's true Machiavellian chapter. Had to look that up. Dispositive means settled, not in dispute.

FDTD – Chapter 2: The Dangers of Negotiations

I'd have named this chapter differently. I'd have called it:

The Strengths, Weaknesses, & Power of Negotiation

Names aside, this chapter is one of the finest presentations on negotiation I've read. ImageImageImageImage
2) I can, however, make his case for the title he chose. Let me put the danger like so:

When Negotiation = Capitulation...DON'T DO IT!

For Sharp, political freedom is the greatest treasure in this world. It demands fierce commitment and readiness to make sacrifice.
3) My own case is this. Every form of combat or cooperation entails negotiations, whether we call them that or not. I say that if we're bold enough to embrace non-violent, legal, political resistance, then we can trust ourselves to negotiate without capitulation.

FDTD – Chapter 12: Facing Dictatorships Realistically

I was able to get my study in last night and identified 4 key thoughts to underline. Here are the shots of all 4. We'll walk through them below.
2) Dictatorships collapse when subjects confront them with adequate force. While they're often thought of as impregnable, they can't withstand concerted political, economic, and social defiance. Let's add, by non-violent legal means.
3) In the light of the Election Steal of 2020, it was hard for me to read this chapter focusing on my own county. The DC Swamp is 100% dependent upon our silent complicity, our complete complacency, that I just couldn't read this without my nation as a whole in mind.

FDTD – The Preface Can Be The Most Personal Part

Prefaces and Forewords are almost always written after the book has been completed. How do you know what you're going to say before you've said it? These two quotes are from Sharp's Preface.
2) Points:

* The prevention of tyranny might be possible
* Successful struggles against dictatorships could be waged
* And waged without mutual slaughter
* Dictatorships could be destroyed
* New dictatorships could be prevented from rising out of the ashes of the old
3) Points:

* The fall of one regime does not bring a utopia
* Hard work and long efforts follow
* The goal is more just social, economic, and political relationships
* The goal is the eradication of other forms of injustices and oppression
