1/ Documents coming out of Netherlands shows they pursued natural herd immunity by stealth, making decisions that would allow infections to spread whilst telling the media their strategy was "maximum control"

Some of this reminds me of the UK
3/ Good thread here from March 2020 comparing Netherlands to UK policy when UK was pursuing herd immunity.

Lots of similarities
4/ There are concerns that Netherlands are coming out of their locldown with 300/100k cases

Like we did in UK in November, was worse in many areas here and their lockdown was tighter than ours
5/ Concerns in Netherlands that talk of return to normality soon will encourage risky behaviour.

Concerns over trials for major events, crowds of 500 in February
6/ Experts worried about the Dutch governments reliance on lateral flow events to open up mass gathering events.

Also lack of tendering process for over a billion euros spent on the tests because "it had to be done quickly"
7/ The use of language around strategy is familiar.

Still can't help feeling that UK government felt fasted route to herd immunity would be to allow the virus to circulate in schools.

April 28th a bumper day for BS

1. Tory MPs writing to constituents to smear a group representing 10k NHS workers.
2. GBD skeptics trying to downplay covid deaths in India.

3. Man who downplayed long covid in children and never wanted masks in school because of "balance of harms" calls for masks to be banned in schools

No suprise Robert Dingwall signed the latest GBD letter, what is shocking is that he's on NERVETAG.

This are some of his zinger insights from spring last year. He's always been very keen on natural herd immunity.
2/ If you thought the last comment sounds a bit like suggesting a "humane cull" here's the full section where he describes a cull but then says its not a cull, but that government should encourage families to volunteer to cull elderly family members.
3/ Here he is claiming masks in Scottish schools is just a political stunt while claiming masks do nothing along with other typical skeptic lines.

1/🧵So we enter another cycle of the covid news narrative.

GBD group put out another letter
Typical RW outlets amplify it to top of the news agenda
GBD representatives cover the broadcast media with interviews
Much of the scientific community calls it out
2/ Worth considering how the organised well funded and well connected GBD and the skeptic network uses the techniques of science denial. See how many you can spot in the various threads ill link into this
3/The false binary argument they make between remove all measures and permanent lockdown misrepresents their critics and allows Johnson to claim he's the sensible middle ground no matter how much of a gamble he takes.

Where are all those who wanted students back in covid unsecure schools because they said they cared about vulnerable and disadvantaged students.

Where are you now?

They never cared.
#edutwitter
@halfon4harlowMP You're chair of the education select committee you're supposed to hold the government to account. Nothing on your TL about this!

But you did find time to talk about a Mail article that proved to be false!
@UsforThemUK and @lensiseethrough we may disagree on what safety measures are needed in education, but surely your horrified at the government failing to provide funding for the most disadvantaged students in society?

Trial experiments in schools to replace isolation with 7 days of LFDs

Prior trials and DfEs scientific basis for continuing.

Still feels like playing guinea pigs to me
2/ A small number of trials went ahead.
Heads opted in, only identified close contacts who chose to replace isolation with DCT had to give consent.

NHS letter to a head setting out the details
3/ I have queried if the data for the November trials has been made available and how these results informed this new round of trials.

Awaiting answers, will share when I get them

Also hoping to find out who makes up the Independent ethics committee that signed this off

1/🧵"This is crazy, how is this ethical?"

Pilots for Daily Testing to replace isolation are starting.

Finally got a copy of the operational handbook and official FAQs

Government isn't following the science
2/ Basics: Close contacts take a LFD at the start of school for 7 days to avoid isolation.
All the experts I know say these tests aren't reliable enough for this purpose.

Book says LFDs will catch the majority of cases, this is a bit of an assumption, but it will miss cases
3/ Close contacts doing DCT can only go to school, they must isolate when not in school. This is because they know this does carry a risk. So why are they doing this, seems like the DfE are balancing risk of higher transmission with reducing isolation. They'e trying to be clever🤦‍♂️
