India is now a "chamber of horrors". I haven't experienced suffering so deep & paralyzing! In this @Lionsroar piece I share how to help India breathe, how to confront oppression in the long term, organizations to support and how to send loving-kindness buff.ly/3t5ogSZ 1/n
It has been absolutely brutal soaking in the collective trauma of my people. My family, friends & colleagues live in Delhi - epicenter of the current crisis.
It feels like everyone I know is on their knees begging for oxygen, medicines & places to bury/cremate the dead. 2/n
I have experienced anything like this before. I have gone through feeling utterly frozen and unable to act or grieve, to crying bitterly or being in fight and flight organizing fundraising campaigns.
Nights have been sleepless. Days have been surreal. 3/n
Indians are rising up to help each other in the spirit of mutual aid, we are also feeling collectively traumatized. I’m asking the wider community around the world to step up and help the India breathe and help Indians rest, grieve and heal. 4/n #IndiaNeedsOxygen
If you are inclined and are trained to do any kinds of loving kindness practices like metta or tonglen, please pass on your spiritual, psychic and energetic support to us. lionsroar.com/how-to-practic… 5/n
If you can contribute financially, here are three options I am trusting right now:

As a Buddhist, I know institutions and systems of our society co-arise with us. Institutions are not divine reality. 7/n
Decades of ecological plunder at the planetary level and international trade/patent laws haven't helped. The immediate cause, as in other parts of the world ruled by right wing governments, is India’s response and approach to the COVID crisis, including... 8/n
...neglecting science, allowing mass election rallies + Hindu religious festivals & usurping money donated for COVID relief. They have also suppressed journalists who are trying to speak the truth by demanding that social-media including @Twitter delete posts critical of the govt
We need to skillfully & compassionately confront the systems that have brought these crimes against humanity to India. I'm personally devoted to thinking about the long term resistance to the forces across the world that are at the root of climate crisis & racial injustices. 10/n
So donate, pray or send loving kindness. If you are inclined, check out “Dharma of Resistance” — a six-month long online course starting May 15 to resist in ways that are aligned with Kingian-Gandhian Nonviolence & Buddhism and are trauma-informed! n/n oneearthsangha.org/programs/dharm…
A thread on relieving anxiety on a day when I am recovering from covid-19, worried about my family in India (potential covid hotspot) & a champion for just transition + health care dropped out.
I can't speak about grief & emotional regulation practices without being .. 1/
...vulnerable about my own emotional landscape.
My spouse & I spent several days in the last 2 weeks considering if we needed to go to ER. Was pulse rate or oxygen bad enough? Was the chest pain indicative of enough inflammation of my heart that an ECG test was needed? 2/
One day, I was only half-joking when I asked my spouse, "Please take care of my mom, who lives by herself in India, if I don't get up in the morning"
He replied, also half-jokingly, "Yes, I will. What is widower called in Hindi?"

Thread: This photo is three days old. I don’t need oxygen anymore but my husband and I, two climate scientists, dearly wish that our community will learn from our experience. Try not to get exposed but also be ready to be visited by this virus. #coronasurvivor#Isurvivedcorona 1/
No, I don't know how I got exposed. I live in Boulder Colorado and my doctors think there are thousands of cases here but only 200 official cased.
And no, I wasn't tested but my symptoms spoke for themselves. Yes, my second week was hard - as usually is for non-mild cases. 2/
We got an oxygen concentrator at home because my blood oxygen levels dropped to 82-85 when I walked. We kept a bag ready to go to emergency room. We haven’t needed to go and we seem to have passed through the storm without “cytokine storm” that is caused by Covid-19. 3/
It is my 40th birthday this weekend. I wondered: What can a climate scientist, Zen meditation teacher, & social justice advocate gift herself in these times?
Guiding a grief, anger, fear and confusion sharing ritual.
Before you dismiss this as new agey, read on.. 1/n
Even if we have not faced outright trauma of growing in a turbulent or abusive family, our body gets used to entering fight, flight, freeze and fawn (FFFF) modes of operation since childhood. Evolution created these modes of operation to protect us from snakes/tigers 2/n
The problem is that without active ways to relax our body & mind, we get stuck in fight/flight/freeze modes. We respond to everything as if we are under attack. Ongoing ecological, social & political trauma doesn't help. Personal & ecological traumas interact with each other 3/n
