Would this be the Daily Mail that opposed schools being included in lockdowns, argued against safety measures and ran a double page hit job on senior NEU leaders on the day I later recieved death threats by phone?
@toryboypierce?
#edutwitter
This was the day I spent talking to the police after an anonymous phone call that afternoon telling me they wanted me to die and that I would die soon.

It also included descriptions of some colleagues homes and the area they lived in. Image
Its become an injoke with @neupresident that we are still waiting for the Mails NEU through the key hole edition of his home, for some reason they missed out the respected head teacher of a top grammar school when they tried to label us all as dangerous left wing militants
I would like to point out this was when government was refusing to release the majority of SAGE's work. Refusing to simple trust the government we forced the first and I think only time SAGE had an official meeting with a non government organisation.
But this is what the papers do. They know that when they point the finger at trade unionists, NHS workers, Independent SAGE members etc they will be setting the trolls on us. They're directing the abuse, but they don't care, at best we're collateral damage in their politics
In the meeting with SAGE @GavinWilliamson didn't bother attending, or share any planning with unions for the next month while media accused us of refusing to engage as our requests for meaningful collaboration with government were ignored.
What were the results of the meeting?
SAGE documents started getting released regularly.

What did they show?
SAGE had produced 9 models for increasing student numbers, Johnsons didnt pick any of the proposals, he'd made up his own
At this point media were platforming people telling us there wasnt a single example of children infecting adults

They didnt back NEU or Greenwich in December. Media actually attacked us for saying dont send all the students back at the start of January, with masks banned!
And now they are going to start telling you how brilliant it is for live experiments to be conducted in schools without needing consent from all involved

And they'll stick the additional risks in the small print.
Trials beginning, next week there will be identified close contacts going into a school in Leicestershire and relying on LFD to keep everyone else in the school safe.
Although gov planned 5 week intervals for stages of unlocking and it seems to be going well, we might not have seen full impact of schools returning
Schools were only back for a few weeks then we had Easter, we had an unlocking and only recently do we have the two in combination Image
Now more unlocking is on the way in a couple of weeks at the same time as there is talk of removing masks in secondary schools.

Seems like an unnecessary risk to me, if there is talk of indoor mixing in a few weeks, removing masks in schools at the same time appears unwise.
Good thread on where we currently are.

Listening to government it seems they think we have bottomed out for cases and they will start rising soon.
Do wonder if the government is looking to speed up herd immunity by allowing the virus to circulate freely in the young.

Like the school trials the nightclub experiments don't feel like rigorous studies that will provide good data
Consider all the uncontrolled variables.

The experiments are there to encourage people to return to normal by creating the impression of safety rather than having measures to cut transmission.
If cutting transmission was the main aim then they'd regulate for ventilation and air filtration and provide funding for it
I think they believe they can let it rip and vaccines will be enough to prevent NHS running out of capacity, which has always been their measure of success
I hear indoor mixing starts during May, and now they're considering no more isolation of close contacts.

Feels like tossing science out the window and embracing GBD. Image
Isnt this just Operation Moonshot?
After criticism over cost and safety the government said they shelved the project, looks like they just cracked on with it without telling us.
Getting rid of measures, possibly isolation, now cuts to test and trace?

However if they were to divert the resources to local public health, that would be a positive change, might help keeping on top of variants.

1/🧵 Questionable ethics in experiments with unvaccinated adults and children

Indian variant found in Leicestershire, few days later a Leicestershire school announces it will be entering experiments to not isolate close contacts.

Wise? ImageImage
This is how the trials work, screenshots are from the official documents sent out to schools taking part in the trials and the SPI-M-O paper the government put out as its scientific evidence for conducting these live experiments.
3/ Here's the local news

No mention of LFD reliability
Glosses over the consent issue
Quotes parent saying its wonderful they are finding ways to reduce isolation

Shouldnt we use measures that cut transmission like ventilation instead?

April 28th a bumper day for BS

1. Tory MPs writing to constituents to smear a group representing 10k NHS workers.
2. GBD skeptics trying to downplay covid deaths in India.

3. Man who downplayed long covid in children and never wanted masks in school because of "balance of harms" calls for masks to be banned in schools

1/ Documents coming out of Netherlands shows they pursued natural herd immunity by stealth, making decisions that would allow infections to spread whilst telling the media their strategy was "maximum control"

Some of this reminds me of the UK
3/ Good thread here from March 2020 comparing Netherlands to UK policy when UK was pursuing herd immunity.

Lots of similarities

No suprise Robert Dingwall signed the latest GBD letter, what is shocking is that he's on NERVETAG.

This are some of his zinger insights from spring last year. He's always been very keen on natural herd immunity.
2/ If you thought the last comment sounds a bit like suggesting a "humane cull" here's the full section where he describes a cull but then says its not a cull, but that government should encourage families to volunteer to cull elderly family members.
3/ Here he is claiming masks in Scottish schools is just a political stunt while claiming masks do nothing along with other typical skeptic lines.

1/🧵So we enter another cycle of the covid news narrative.

GBD group put out another letter
Typical RW outlets amplify it to top of the news agenda
GBD representatives cover the broadcast media with interviews
Much of the scientific community calls it out
2/ Worth considering how the organised well funded and well connected GBD and the skeptic network uses the techniques of science denial. See how many you can spot in the various threads ill link into this
3/The false binary argument they make between remove all measures and permanent lockdown misrepresents their critics and allows Johnson to claim he's the sensible middle ground no matter how much of a gamble he takes.

Where are all those who wanted students back in covid unsecure schools because they said they cared about vulnerable and disadvantaged students.

Where are you now?

They never cared.
#edutwitter
@halfon4harlowMP You're chair of the education select committee you're supposed to hold the government to account. Nothing on your TL about this!

But you did find time to talk about a Mail article that proved to be false!
@UsforThemUK and @lensiseethrough we may disagree on what safety measures are needed in education, but surely your horrified at the government failing to provide funding for the most disadvantaged students in society?
