Rep. @BeeForGeorgia wasn't going to let her constituents' votes be thrown out. When the Trump campaign alleged that thousands of voters weren't living in Georgia, Bee personally knocked on her neighbors’ doors to confirm they were in fact residents, demolishing claims of fraud.🧵
@BeeForGeorgia Bee was a champion for her community long before assuming office. She helped resettle refugees, founded a non-profit to empower girls in under-resourced communities, & worked for @SamforGeorgia, the first openly gay Asian-American man elected to the state’s General Assembly.
@BeeForGeorgia@SamforGeorgia In 2017, Bee became the 1st Vietnamese-American elected to Georgia's legislature, assuming the seat vacated by @staceyabrams when she launched her bid for governor. Bee too is a voting rights advocate who helped stop precinct closures & repeal the "exact match" registration law.
@BeeForGeorgia@SamforGeorgia@staceyabrams Criminal legal reform is another one of Bee’s top issues. Before her father came to the US as a refugee, he was a POW for 3 years. She’s introduced legislation to restrict the use of solitary confinement, eliminate private prisons, & hold police accountable for use of force.
@BeeForGeorgia@SamforGeorgia@staceyabrams Bee is an advocate for the Asian American community, which now represents 4% of Georgia’s population. She’s pushed for election & government resources to be provided in more languages, & has sounded the alarm on the terrifying rise in anti-Asian hate crimes.
@BeeForGeorgia@SamforGeorgia@staceyabrams After the March shooting targeting Asian women in Atlanta, Bee spoke out about the legacy of discrimination against Asian Americans, society’s minimization of violence committed by white men, & the intersection of racism & misogyny when talking about victimization of Asian women.
@BeeForGeorgia@SamforGeorgia@staceyabrams “There's a long history of Asian American violence in [the US]..& it is not told..very intentionally to make us keep our heads down, to pit communities of color against each other, to make us adhere to this model minority myth..that sense of invisibility has harmed our community”

We’ve noticed a disturbing trend this year of GOP state legislators across the country defending slavery (?!?!) Here’s a rundown of a few of the GOP lawmakers who hold the dubious distinction of defending slavery or related institutions this year:
Tennessee GOP Rep. Justin Lafferty ranted in defense of the deeply racist three-fifths compromise, which gave slaveholding states more power. The comments came as lawmakers debated restricting the way public schools could teach about racism & slavery.
Louisiana GOP Rep. Ray Garofalo said Louisiana schools need to teach “the good” of slavery. Deeply disturbing that elected officials with power over our children’s education would seek to minimize the horrors of slavery.
Instead of encouraging people to get vaccinated, GOP-controlled state legislatures have introduced a wave of anti-vaccination laws. Here’s a roundup of some of the most incompetent Republicans threatening our post-pandemic return to normal:
A shot of conspiracy 💉 Florida just passed a bill banning businesses, schools, & government entities from requiring proof of vaccination, bowing to extremist anti-vaxxers with new laws that could undermine our health & economic recovery.
A dose of hypocrisy 💉 A Senate amendment in Arizona would prevent private businesses from requiring vaccinations. It of course should be noted that many of the proposal's supporters are totally fine with businesses discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation.
In honor of #TeacherAppreciationDay, we want to highlight 6 of our amazing Spotlight candidates who need your support, Democrats who have served their communities as educators & bring those important values & experiences to our state legislatures!
New Hampshire House candidate Muriel Hall taught middle school students in her district for over three decades! As a member of her teacher’s union, she’s ready to fight to strengthen workers’ rights. Muriel is running in a special election on June 8! races.dlcc.org/races/muriel-h…
Virginia Delegate @shelly_simonds worked as a teacher for much of her career & served on her local school board! She knows the needs of students firsthand & is passionate about raising teacher pay. She’s up for reelection this November! races.dlcc.org/races/shelly-s…
Today is the 14th anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting. For over a decade after that tragedy, the Virginia GOP blocked common sense gun reforms. But when Dems finally won control of the legislature in 2019, they pushed through sweeping changes to address the violence.
Virginia Democrats passed a background check requirement for all gun sales. They implemented a red flag law so that law enforcement & concerned family members could petition a court to remove weapons from someone deemed a danger to themselves or others.
Virginia Democrats also passed a law requiring people to report lost or stolen guns, and reinstated a one-handgun-a-month law to crack down on illegal trafficking. Cities & counties are now allowed to ban guns in government buildings & public recreation areas.
Black women in the US suffer from a maternal mortality rate that’s 3 to 4 times higher than white women, & the pandemic has only widened the gap. Dems, spearheaded by Black women legislators, are working to address this public health crisis. A thread. #BlackMaternalHealthWeek
Ohio Minority Leader @EmiliaSykesOH helped form the nation’s first state-level Black Maternal Health Caucus, which has introduced bills to address cultural competency training for medical professionals & provide Medicaid reimbursements for doula services.
@EmiliaSykesOH Kentucky’s only Black woman legislator @atticascott4ky introduced bills to review maternal deaths & remove taxes on baby products. She’s also fought back against bans on abortion care, which disproportionately harm poor Black women who face barriers to healthy pregnancies.
BREAKING: We just released our Battleground Map for the 2021-2022 election cycle! Here are the states where we have critical opportunities to protect Dem majorities, flip new chambers blue, & expand Democratic power for the future.
💙VIRGINIA HOUSE. We flipped it blue in 2019 & in Nov. 2021 it's up to us to defend it. The new Dem majority passed voting rights laws, reaffirmed reproductive choice, & became the 1st state in the South to ban LGBTQ discrimination. The GOP is desperate to regain this chamber.
💙ARIZONA HOUSE & SENATE. Dems made big progress here in the last 4 years. We’re on the cusp of a legislative majority & an independent commission will give us new maps in 2022. AZ is home to a rapidly radicalizing GOP, full of conspiracy theorists who will repel moderate voters.
