Today is the 14th anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting. For over a decade after that tragedy, the Virginia GOP blocked common sense gun reforms. But when Dems finally won control of the legislature in 2019, they pushed through sweeping changes to address the violence.
Virginia Democrats passed a background check requirement for all gun sales. They implemented a red flag law so that law enforcement & concerned family members could petition a court to remove weapons from someone deemed a danger to themselves or others.
Virginia Democrats also passed a law requiring people to report lost or stolen guns, and reinstated a one-handgun-a-month law to crack down on illegal trafficking. Cities & counties are now allowed to ban guns in government buildings & public recreation areas.
Virginia now has penalties for people who recklessly leave loaded firearms around children. Trigger activators, which turn guns into automatic weapons, are now illegal. And people who are served with permanent protective orders must turn over their guns within 24 hours.
These measures prevent suicides, murders & accidental deaths of children. They keep Virginians safe, crackdown on gun trafficking & keep firearms out of the hands of abusers. We can respect the 2nd Amendment & save lives at the same time. The GOP just needs to get out of the way.

Black women in the US suffer from a maternal mortality rate that’s 3 to 4 times higher than white women, & the pandemic has only widened the gap. Dems, spearheaded by Black women legislators, are working to address this public health crisis. A thread. #BlackMaternalHealthWeek
Ohio Minority Leader @EmiliaSykesOH helped form the nation’s first state-level Black Maternal Health Caucus, which has introduced bills to address cultural competency training for medical professionals & provide Medicaid reimbursements for doula services.
@EmiliaSykesOH Kentucky’s only Black woman legislator @atticascott4ky introduced bills to review maternal deaths & remove taxes on baby products. She’s also fought back against bans on abortion care, which disproportionately harm poor Black women who face barriers to healthy pregnancies.
BREAKING: We just released our Battleground Map for the 2021-2022 election cycle! Here are the states where we have critical opportunities to protect Dem majorities, flip new chambers blue, & expand Democratic power for the future.
💙VIRGINIA HOUSE. We flipped it blue in 2019 & in Nov. 2021 it's up to us to defend it. The new Dem majority passed voting rights laws, reaffirmed reproductive choice, & became the 1st state in the South to ban LGBTQ discrimination. The GOP is desperate to regain this chamber.
💙ARIZONA HOUSE & SENATE. Dems made big progress here in the last 4 years. We’re on the cusp of a legislative majority & an independent commission will give us new maps in 2022. AZ is home to a rapidly radicalizing GOP, full of conspiracy theorists who will repel moderate voters.
Republicans have been very busy enacting their voter suppression agenda. Here’s a recap thread of the major developments from last week alone:
An Arizona Senate committee approved legislation to shorten the early voting period & require ballots be postmarked 5 days prior to the election. Another bill passed the Senate to implement voter ID for mail voting; 80% of the electorate used mail ballots in last year’s election.
Florida Senate Republicans advanced a bill to ban ballot drop boxes, require absentee voting requests be renewed each election year, & make it a crime to collect ballots from anyone other than a family member. The bill’s sponsor acknowledged it wouldn’t solve any known problems.
Help is on the way! Biden just signed the American Rescue Plan into law, the most progressive piece of legislation in American history. This plan does so much more than people realize so we’re breaking down a bunch of the benefits for the American people. Check it out.
1/13
DIRECT PAYMENTS! The American Rescue Plan will allow more than 85% of American households to receive a direct check of $1,400 per person. The typical family of four making $100,000 will get $5,600 in direct check payments.
2/13
POVERTY ALLEVIATION! The American Rescue Plan will lift 11 million people out of poverty & CUT CHILD POVERTY IN HALF. It will reduce poverty in Asian, Black, & Hispanic communities by 21%, 34%, & 39% respectively.

It’s #InternationalWomensDay and we are pumped to celebrate some of the incredible women who are blazing trails and changing the game in state legislatures across the country. Make sure you’re following all of these heroic women. THREAD!
Under the leadership of Virginia’s first woman & first Jewish Speaker @EFillerCorn, Democrats have repealed medically-unnecessary anti-abortion laws, combatted workplace harassment, banned pregnancy discrimination, and ratified the Equal Rights Amendment.
@EFillerCorn At 28, @MariManoogian is the youngest woman serving in the Michigan House, where she’s fought for clean drinking water & public schools. She’s the great-granddaughter of refugees & the first Armenian-American woman to serve in the state legislature.
When Emilia Sykes became an Ohio legislator, she had trouble getting in the statehouse. Security often searched & questioned her while white lobbyists & aides walked in freely. One day she asked the officer why he wouldn’t let her in. “You don’t look like a state legislator.” 1/7
Sykes always knew representation matters. Growing up as a dancer, she saw the diverse bodies of the Alvin Ailey troupe, letting her know she could grace the stage too. But in the portraits lining the halls of Ohio's statehouse, it was clear white men had long held that space.

But now, as the House minority leader of the most diverse Democratic caucus in Ohio history, Sykes is leading the agenda, helping pass more bills in her first year than were passed in the previous two sessions combined.
