There are two parts to the creative process:

• Gathering raw materials
• Refining those raw materials

A thread on how thinking this way can unlock your creativity and 10x your output:
I break these two stages down into:

• Creative generation
• Creative execution

And you can see these two phases in any creative process.

• Filming → Editing
• Writing → Rewriting
• Sketching → Refining
• Recording → Remixing

But this distinction is important.
Why is this distinction important?

Because these two phases require completely different states of mind.

And most people try and lump them together, which leads to creative frustration.

So the key to unlocking creativity:

Completely separating these two processes.
So the first thing you should do: find different sacred times for both.

For me, 95% of my creative ideas come during two times:

• Long Saturday walks
• 60-minute Sunday sauna sessions

And 95% of my creative execution comes during one time:

• 6 to 8 AM, seven days a week.
The mental model to use when finding these times:

Creative generation is best done away from the desk where your mind can wander. But make sure you can capture the ideas.

Creative execution is best done on a regimented, daily schedule. That way, you are executing every day.
The ideal mental state for creative generation:

• Calm
• Relaxed
• No fixed time
• Potentially slightly intoxicated

You want your mind free to wander and explore with no set agenda.

My personal favorites:

• Long walks
• Youtube rabbit holes
• Exploring lindy blog posts
Common mistakes in the creative generation phase:

• Filtering ideas
• Hitting backspace
• Forcing yourself to explore something
• Thinking everything needs to be perfect

The goal here is simple: get as much "creative potential energy" out of your head as possible.
Good ways to improve your creative generation:

• Create an elite capture system
• Learn to see ideas everywhere
• Use the Bird Song technique (h/t @aliabdaal)
• Give yourself permission to create junk (h/t @jamesclear)

This is simply the consumer-to-creator mental shift.
Now, the next step: creative execution.

The ideal mental state for creative execution:

• Done every day
• Done at the same time
• Done with a repeated mix of stimulant/music/sleep/etc

You want to turn your creative execution process into a well-oiled machine.
Common mistakes made in the creative execution stage:

• Distractions
• Perfectionism
• Impostor syndrome
• Fear of being judged

The root of these problems? Ego.

The easiest way to solve this? Up your publishing cadence.

Become too prolific for your ego to keep up.
And that's it!

6 Lessons on Business, Life, and Leverage from @sweatystartup:
The foundation of successful businesses:

Identifying problems, then creating processes to prevent them.

Yes, this requires more upfront effort than solving every problem yourself.

But put in the 20 hours to save yourself 200 hours in the future.
There are two types of employees:

Doers and Thinkers.

• 90% are Doers
• 10% are Thinkers

Doers are commodities. So your goal is to build a business that an everyday Doer can operate.

But you find a rare Thinker, enable them to help build and motivate them with equity.

Build an online writing habit in 30 days.

That's the first of 7 promises we make to every 🚢 Ship 30 for 30 member.

Here's a thread of all 7 promises (and how we keep them):
Build an online writing habit in 30 days.

Early writers face the same problems:

• Perfectionism
• Self-confidence
• Generating ideas
• Impostor syndrome
• Writing consistently
• Choosing a platform

Ship 30 for 30 is designed to eliminate these so you can just write.
Foster a clearer, calmer mind.

Writing is thinking. There is no better way to understand something than to write about it.

But life's big ideas don't need a long blog post.

Atomic Essay constraints force you to simplify, clarify, and distill your writing into clear thinking.

"Do intentional, effortless work."

I've been looking for a short, personal productivity mantra.

One that I can keep top of mind and repeat every time to sit down to work.

Here are some thoughts on these four words and why I chose them:
The four words in this mantra sum up the way I want to work every day.

Let's dig into each one.
Do.

Not plan, not theorize, not ponder. Do.

I've found that the root of overwhelm comes from trying to figure everything out at once.

The simple cure for this overwhelm?

Realizing how much work you can get done in 90 focused minutes.

Let action, not planning, bring clarity.

THREAD: Seven creative principles in five words or less.

From Ship 30 for 30 Office Hours with @jackbutcher

Make noise, listen for signal.

A simple framework for prolific output:

• Share 1,000 ideas, find 100 that resonate
• Share 100 ideas, find 10 that resonate
• Share 10 ideas, find 3 that resonate

Then, find a way to say those same 3 ideas in 1000 different ways.
Consistency is the great differentiator.

What does consistency breed?

Credibility → Talk about something long enough and you become a reputable voice.

Competence → No one has 50 shitty versions of anything. They either have 10 shitty versions and quit or they figure it out.
