At Mauthausen, from where my grandmother, great-grandmother and two great-aunts were finally liberated in 1945, Jews were thrown down this notorious staircase to their deaths by Nazis - who thought what they were doing was hilarious.

These were known as the 'Stairs of Death'.
In Papa, Hungary, before my grandmother and her family were taken first to the ghetto, then sent to Auschwitz, they were giving shelter to 2 young children: sent there by cousins in Slovakia who hoped, prayed, they might be safe in Hungary.

One day, they had a knock on the door.
The two children were taken away by the police. And outside, people - my grandmother's own neighbours - cheered and celebrated. The children were never seen again.
There is zero difference - none whatsoever - between those laughing Nazis and cheering Hungarian fascists and this, below.

The people in this video are sick, twisted bastards. Just like those Nazis and fascists I referred to. No difference at all.
There is zero moral difference between what the Nazis thought about Jews and what extremist illegal settlers think of Palestinians. They don't believe they are actual people; they think they're tiny ants to be crushed.

And they think that God is on their side.
I have news for these people. There is no God that would support such a disgusting thing. Just as there is no God who supports Islamist extremism and there is no God who supports Christian fundamentalism and there is no God who supports Hindu nationalism either.
Because if any God *did* support anything as awful as that... no fully paid-up member of the human race could ever believe in such a God.

Every single major religious scripture talks about compassion, loving thy neighbour, peace and fraternity. Because God is love.
God is not hate. Or dehumanisation. Or brutalisation. Or nationalism. Or fascism. Or mass murder. Or genocide.

And God, in fact, implores every single one of us to speak up and hold to account those who perpetrate and support such evil.
That is why I, a Jew, am sickened to my stomach by these people - and by what they do to Palestinians every single day.

The Western world would not kowtow to Islamist extremists or Christian fundamentalists. Why does it kowtow to Zionist extremists?
Zionist extremists do not share 'our values'. Zionist extremists intimidate, brutalise, displace their fellow humans every single day. And we think calling them out is 'antisemitism'?!

It's THESE PEOPLE who are antisemitic. It's THESE PEOPLE who do not act according to the Torah
And very often, I find myself wondering whether any of them have even read it.

But sadly, it's not just them. I know what Zionism means to me and is supposed to mean - but what it means to me died, decades ago.
What it means to me died when Bill Clinton and Ehud Barak made Yasser Arafat a deplorable, disgraceful 'offer' at Camp David - before Clinton then blamed Arafat for rejecting this insult.

What it means to me died when a Jew - a fellow Jew! - murdered Yitzhak Rabin in cold blood
What it means to me died when Ariel Sharon, the war criminal of Sabra and Shatila, paraded around Temple Mount deliberately to trigger the Second Intifada.

What it means to me died when Arafat was placed under house arrest... then blamed for not keeping his populace in check.
Imagine that. A leader under house arrest blamed for not doing the impossible and keeping his brutalised public in check... while under house arrest.

Ever since then, there's been no hope. None at all. Israel, post-Rabin at least, has never ever been serious about peace.
It doesn't want peace. It wants dominion. It has never been prepared to make the kind of serious concessions required - and the whole point of the illegal settlements is, and has always been, to prevent a viable Palestinian state ever coming about.
Settlements which, I might add, began under Rabin and Shimon Peres' watch.

That is why Palestinians voted for Hamas - because they were helpless. Hopeless. Dealing with a 'partner for peace' acting in the most monstrous bad faith.

Monstrous bad faith which is shared by Hamas.
Hamas do not weep when Palestinians are killed. They celebrate. They know what happens when they fire rockets - but anything that helps bring about even more suffering, even more death, gets their thumbs up. Anything for a propaganda victory as their people mourn and suffer.
But that doesn't change Israel's ultimate responsibility in any way whatsoever. Israel is an illegal occupying power. What would *you* do if your people were illegally occupied?

We know what the Americans did. They took up arms in 1776, and celebrate their victory to this day.
We know what the British people were told to do by their leader in 1940 - before a battle which defined how the UK sees itself, to this very day.

We know what black South Africans did - and that their triumphant leader was exalted around the world.
We know what the nationalist community in Northern Ireland did. And that peace would never have happened without some among their number taking up arms in the first place.

The same is true of struggles for liberation from terror and tyranny throughout history.
If an IDF soldier happened to be born Palestinian, happened to be born in a place which is illegally occupied and their people denied almost any form of recognition, any of the basic dignity the rest of us take for granted, they'd probably have taken up arms against Israel.
Don't take my word for it. Take Barak's. It's what he himself said before he became a born-again rejectionist.

Meanwhile, the West offers the usual pathetic platitudes and both sides-ism, and talks of a 'two-state solution' which is DEAD. Finished.
No Israeli government has even pretended to support a viable peace for over a decade. The choice facing an Israeli electorate, itself militarised and brutalised and brainwashed into viewing the Palestinians as somehow less than human, is never about peace any more.
That's the Palestinians: who are even more isolated and abandoned than ever as a whole series of vile Arab regimes, none of whom could care less about any of their own suffering peoples, does egregious deals with Israel.

And this - get this! - is hailed.
Hitler failed to defeat the Jewish people. Somehow, through the most horrific atrocities in human history, it survived. And now prospers.

I wouldn't be sat here typing this if it had not.
Plenty of Jews killed Nazis if they ever had the opportunity. What were they - 'terrorists' for doing that?

Illegal occupation cannot stand. Illegal occupation must always be resisted. Anything else is to deny the humanity of a disgustingly oppressed people.
Yes, many Israelis do live in fear. But they live in fear because of their state and government's never-ending monstrous behaviour.

As a great man once said: it's the Palestinians you should be weeping for. Not those with the machine guns.

There's two wildly differing responses among those who've known, either personally or through their family histories, suffering, injustice and deep deep pain.

Group 1 empathise with all those who suffer similarly. They seek understanding, they act with compassion, they CARE.
Group 2, for some awful reason which is clearly also part of the human condition, go on to inflict similar pain on others, and rejoice in doing so.

That's often even true of CEOs or office bullies, let alone what goes on in Palestine.
See also: those born poor who end up rich, then spend the rest of their lives voting for the right and to kick even more shit in the faces of those they've left behind.

So much of Israel's behaviour is based on fear. Fear, above all, of *it happening again*.

"In order to have real adjustment within our personalities, we all want the well‐adjusted life in order to avoid neurosis, or schizophrenic personalities.

But I say to you, my friends, as I move to my conclusion...
... There are certain things in our nation and in the world, (to) which I am proud to be maladjusted, and (to) which I hope all men of goodwill will be maladjusted…

I’m about convinced now that there is need for a new organization in our world.
The International Association for the Advancement of Creative Maladjustment – men and women who will be as maladjusted as the prophet Amos…

As maladjusted as Abraham Lincoln who had the vision to see that this nation would not survive half-slave and half-free…

What do the following electorally successful leaders - left, centre, right - have in common?

- Biden
- Obama
- Ardern
- Sturgeon
- Reagan
- Clinton
- Johnson
- Blair

The answer lies in how they communicate(d) their message: selling a vision by telling a story.
Storytelling is absolutely integral to my methodology as an English teacher. I think we all communicate through stories in many ways - and my aim with students is to get them to build their own stories via videos, images and their own imagination, creativity & critical thinking.
Notice how all eight of the individuals I've listed above define(d) themselves much more by what they were *for* than what they were against. Notice, too, how few - if any - of them ever got that angry at their opponents.

Left wing rage? It doesn't work.

Below, a Newsnight discussion which some of you may remember. I'm posting it because in my view, nothing better encapsulates the cultural divide in Britain - nor why the Tories know they're onto something re: 'the war on woke'.

Starkey is both offensive and terrifyingly prescient. He basically predicts the crumbling of the Red Wall AND Boris Johnson's British exceptionalism.

What did we on the left do? Quite naturally, quite understandably, label him as 'privileged' and pigeonhole him as 'racist'.
There is no way of bridging that divide. These are two colossally different world views on show.

And it's just plain stupid for Labour to even try. We'll never be able to out-Tory the Tories; nor should we even want to.

As depressing and cynical as British politics so often is, you have to admit that very few electoral systems anywhere allow for stuff like the below.

I've spent the last 10 minutes in tears of mirth just looking at these images. 😂😂😂

Thinking about Boris Johnson's success - and like it or not, as a politician (but certainly not as a Prime Minister), he's a quite massive success - prompts me to write something about human nature.

You see: we all *assume* that we want honest, trustworthy, dignified leaders.
Just as we all *assume* that we want honest, trustworthy, socially responsible corporate CEOs.

But we don't get them. And something about human nature indulges this for some reason. Especially when it comes to politics.
John Major, Gordon Brown, Ed Miliband and Jeremy Corbyn are all profoundly decent, honest people. All four got walloped at the ballot box.

Tony Blair, David Cameron and Boris Johnson are anything but honest. All three succeeded at the ballot box.

So... why is that?
