(THREAD) Live tweeting as I listen to "Where Do We Go From Here?," an interview with @Isikoff and @dklaidman, the new episode of the @GaslitNation podcast with @AndreaChalupa & @SarahKendzior.

Journalists Michael Isikoff (@Isikoff) and Daniel Klaidman (@dklaidman) co-host the podcast @SkullduggeryPod on Yahoo News. Tonight they discuss the institutional decline that gave us Trump and where we go from here. For more on Mike & Daniel ⬇️ patreon.com/posts/where-do…
"We're now living in an era of kind of shamelessness that I think didn't exist in the same way before, and of course, the personification of that is Donald Trump." - @dklaidman
I'm posting the above tweets now & live tweeting as I listen from here. This episode of @GaslitNation is available wherever you get your podcasts, or listen early & get bonus episodes on Patreon.

If you're new here, welcome! I do this every Tuesday.

P.S. I apologize if I misquote Daniel as Michael or vice versa. I think I've got their voices down, but it's been a long day. ♥️
"To this day, we don't fully understand all the nature of the relationships and everything that went down in 2016. [Trump-Russia] is going to be an ongoing matter that historians are going to be debating for years." - @Isikoff
.@AndreaChalupa: "They used some interview clip of me on Ukrainian independent TV... so we look like a bunch of Ukrainian illuminati, my sister and I coming after Trump." 😂😂😂😂😂😂
"They tried to play down impeachment and make it go away, and Sarah and I would not let it go away." - @AndreaChalupa

"They smeared us, and Pelosi's staff banned volunteers on the Pelosi groups from reading my book, quoting our show. It was crazy." - @sarahkendzior

Wow.
There's been some unanticipated defenses from Isikoff of William Barr and of Democrats not wanting to impeach. I'm at 36:50, and Sarah's pushing back. This is an interesting episode. Not the usual kind of interesting. I wonder what's about to happen.
Q: Looking back, if impeachment helped Trump more than hurt him, was it still worth it?

@SarahKendzior: Yes, because it's upholding their duty to the public as elected public servants, and it's educating the public about the extent of the crimes.
"They say 'if he really did it, if he really did these things, Congress would act...' It's the LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY that lets this lie endure... I think a lot of people saw clearly he was a threat once [officials] responded to him as if he was a threat." - @sarahkendzior
Daniel: Trump, to some extent, was defanged. When was he kicked off Twitter?

Michael: Before the impeachment.

Daniel: But after January 6, right?

Sarah: After he attempted to overthrow the government from within, he was let off Twitter, yes. THAT was his punishment. 😂😂😂
"Who put bombs around the Capitol? Who took the panic buttons out of @AyannaPressley's office? Who gave tours to insurrectionists in Congress. Those just seem like absolutely essential questions we need answered now." - @sarahkendzior

It's been FOUR months. Holy crap.
That's all for this week's @GaslitNation, another great episode from @sarahkendzior & @AndreaChalupa. Get the full discussion, including topics I skipped over, and bonus episodes on Patreon. This week's bonus Q&A is "The Ukrainian Oligarch of Oligarchs." patreon.com/gaslit

NEW: Three months ago, a New York Times story tricked America. We deserve to know if Donald Trump is still receiving intelligence briefings. trumpfile.org/is-trump-getti…
"Biden Bars Trump From Receiving Intelligence Briefings"

That’s a really comforting headline, isn’t it? We could all sleep easier at night, if it wasn’t a lie. We have no idea if Trump is still receiving intelligence briefings traditionally shared with former presidents.
Neither President Biden or any government official has, to my knowledge, confirmed the New York Times headline, and no reporter has asked for an update. The Times story stems from an interview in which Biden was asked if Trump should — should — receive intelligence briefings.

1. On October 5, 1993, Donald Trump spoke before a group of lawmakers and blatantly lied about Native Americans and reservations. Rep. George Miller noted the racism in Trump's comments. trumpfile.org/trump-lies-to-…
Donald Trump: They don't look like Indians to me, sir.

Rep. Miller: Thank God that’s not the test of whether or not people have rights in this country or not, whether or not they pass your look test.

A friend and I watched two political films last night that came out less than a decade ago. Game Change (Julianne Moore, 2012) and Confirmation (Kerry Washington, 2016). In the last four years, the GOP has turned these films into relics from a different United States.
Confirmation is about the confirmation of Clarence Thomas to SCOTUS, complicated by sexual assault claims from Anita Hill. It's a moving film. But the most shocking moments don't feel like an untold story. They feel like a kid-friendly version of the Kavanaugh confirmation.
Game Change tells the story of McCain's 2008 campaign picking Sarah Palin for VP & everything that happened after. As the campaign got to know her, they FEARED that the base would find out how bad she is for the nation. All of those bad qualities are what the GOP aims for today.

Fox News is so fair and balanced and "America First" that Sean #Hannity was getting briefings from Russian chaos agent Paul Manafort during the Trump campaign.
Steve Bannon was very concerned people might find out Manafort was still advising Trump's team. Manafort "resigned" from the campaign three months before this.
"The reality is you cannot count on [Trump] to win a debate."

Accurate.
