Sen. Leahy lays out depths of reach of U.S. government’s (& capital it protects) tentacles in #ElSalvador 🐙 with zero self-reflection abt how the economic policies they’ve been able to impose up to this point might play a role in the current state of affairs...
Despite mass organizing & wide disapproval of dollarization, CAFTA & pro-privatization policies (intended to privilege the private sector w/in essential goods & services... bc you know... trickle down blah blah blah)...
Despite the fact that their financing of military & police to protect private property has clearly lead to death & disappearances of land defenders in the region...
Despite the fact that #Bukele’s program will lead to the same destruction (regardless of his populist lies). But yes, empire will empire...
I’m frustrated at so many’s ability to ignore the fact that Salvadorans feel the level of hopelessness that they feel bc of the failures of the capitalist system violently imposed by the U.S. That’s what #Bukele’s populism mostly speaks to
Oh and bc you know, water management, education, etc can only run efficiently if the private sector do it...

A lot of things happening in #ElSalvador’s legislative assembly today w/#Bukele’s #NuevasIdeas in complete control.

$1 billion loan approved through Interamerican Development Bank (IDB).

This is major & U.S. government backed. 1/
After slew of privatization in first decades of the post-war period, Salvadorans organized in mass to push back to save healthcare, water, education from pro-corporate restructuring & plunder. US embassy & IDB have always insisted on ignoring the will of the masses on this. 2/
I never get tired of sharing this article as a very clear example of this: nacla.org/news/el-salvad…

This is what ppl like Saca, Bukele, & Biden mean when they talk about “fixing” the country’s water, healthcare, education system. 3/
