Breaking: #Taiwan reported 245 #COVID19 cases, 240 local and 5 imported.
There are 2 new death cases today.
New Taiepi: 106 (Chonghe: 33) Taipei: 102 (Wanhua: 48) Taoyuan: 12 Changhua: 10 Keelung: 3 Kaohsung: 3 Hsinchu County: 2 Hsinchu City: 1 Yunlin: 1
There were 88 new cases related to the Wanhua tea massage parlor and 66 that have relevance to Wanhua.
One dead case is a woman in her 60s and works in Wanhua. She passed out at home and unfortunately died.
Another case is another guy in his 80s and was unfortunately infected at Fareastern Hospital, where there was an internal outbreak. He was hospitalized next to an infected patient.
320 ENT doctors have now agreed to devote themselves to the community-level testing stations and they are voluntarily devoting themselves to become part of the national medical system responding to the #COVID19 outbreak.
Community-level doctors who are now still receiving patients, more than 88% have been trained at medical centers.
These community-level doctors will now set up community-level rapid testing stations and they are going to start joining the process of vaccinating a larger number of citizens.
They are also planning to recruit more community-level doctors to join the team to offer health consults for those in home quarantine as well as other patients with chronic illness.
Chen is now vowing to increase the pace of #COVID19 vaccination in #Taiwan, even though Taiwan has lagged behind a lot of countries when it comes to that. He stresses the importance for community clinics to join the team of offering #COVID19 vaccination to citizens.
There are at least 37 students at all levels that have been tested positive for #COVID19 so far.
There are still 1 case without a specific source of infection and 14 other cases under investigation to determine their sources of infection.
Starting tomorrow, all levels of schools, including private and public kindergarten will be closed until May 28. They will all switch to online teaching and learning.
All online courses will be viewed as regular learning, which means that there will be no make-up courses during the summer vacation.
Chen is reminding those who went to get rapid tests that a negative test result doesn't necessarily mean that the individual is really negative. He said it could only mean that the individual's viral load hasn't reached a high-enough level to be tested as positive.
He said if high-risk individuals start to show some symptoms, they shouldn't consider those symptoms as a regular cold. They should follow protocols to report back to the nearby hospitals.
He said the growing number of cases shows that the virus has been circulating at the community level for a while, so he calls on citizens to refrain from going out or gathering.
Chen also emphasized the importance of not underestimate the threat posed by asymptomatic cases and reminding citizens not to miss the opportunity to report any symptoms.
He is reminding infected citizens with mild symptoms don't go to medical centers, and leave those resources to those who really need it.
Chen also reiterated that the minor decrease of #COVID19 cases today doesn't mean that the prevention measures have been effective because he thinks it is more important to look at the long-term trend.
Chen is also emphasizing again that once more rapid-testing stations have been set up, it is also not just for anyone who wants to get tested to go get tested. He warns that only those who have close contact with those infected or those who might have symptoms should ...
... go get tested. Chen said expanding the number of rapid testing stations is the priority now, especially across Taipei and New Taipei.
Chen said in order for #Taiwan to become safer from further outbreaks, at least 40% of its populations need to be vaccinated. So far, only 1% of the population has been vaccinated so far.
Chen called on business owners to be lenient and tolerant towards employees who need to take days off during the current #COVID19 outbreak while calling on employees to be honest with their employers.
He also called on the public to not use any discriminatory ways to view or treat those who may have been tested positive for #COVID19, calling it an important move to ensure that #Taiwan to get through the current challenge together.

Latest for @dw_chinese (Eng version): Amid the worst #COVID19 outbreak in #Taiwan, I talked to public health expert Chi Chunhuei about what might have caused the spike in the number of local cases and what should #Taiwan do to get through this challenge. williamyang-35700.medium.com/what-are-the-k…
"Taiwan has done well since the beginning of the outbreak by strictly guarding the border while domestically following a strict guideline of mask-wearing and maintaining social distancing. This allowed Taiwan to have no local cases by mid-April 2020."
"From then until December 2020, Taiwan had no domestic coronavirus cases. The successful control quickly led Taiwanese people into what I called post-pandemic mode, largely living a very normal life.

According to @politico, the European Parliament is expected to pass a motion on Thursday to formally freeze the EU’s investment agreement with #China, as MEPs criticize #China's sanctions on EU lawmakers earlier this year. politico.com/news/2021/05/1…
The draft motion will also call on the EU to step up coordination with the U.S. to deal with China, while stressing that any trade deals with Taiwan “should not be held hostage” by the deal with Beijing.
According to the draft, which has been backed by the biggest political groupings, the Parliament will vote to urge that “any consideration of the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment, ...

US House Speaker @SpeakerPelosi called for a US diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, criticizing #China for human rights abuses and saying global leaders who attend would lose their moral authority. channelnewsasia.com/news/sport/pel…
"What I propose - and join those who are proposing - is a diplomatic boycott," Pelosi said, in which "lead countries of the world withhold their attendance at the Olympics. "Let's not honour the Chinese government by having heads of state go to China," she added.
"For heads of state to go to China in light of a genocide that is ongoing - while you're sitting there in your seat - really begs the question, what moral authority do you have to speak again about human rights any place in the world?" she said.

Latest for @dwnews: After being one of the world's #COVID19 success stories for more than a year, #Taiwan is now engulfed by its worst outbreak since the start of the pandemic. Here's how the government has responded and how experts assess the situation: dw.com/en/is-taiwans-…
"Throughout the pandemic, Taiwan has been praised as one of the world's few COVID success stories, having kept its total number of cases in the hundreds. However, over the past several days, Taiwan has reported more than 900 new locally transmitted COVID cases."
"On Monday alone, Taiwan reported 335 new cases, a record daily high. The vast majority of the new cases are concentrated in the capital Taipei, and the surrounding New Taipei City region."

I'm working on an explainer about #Taiwan's worst #COVID19 outbreak but I want to share some very sensible analysis by Professor Chi Chunhuei from Oregon State University, who has been closely studying Taiwan's disease prevention mechanism since the SARS epidemic:
"Taiwan has done well since the beginning of the outbreak by strictly guarding the border while domestically following a strict guideline of mask-wearing and maintaining social distancing. This allowed Taiwan to have no local cases by mid-April 2020.
The successful control quickly led Taiwanese people into what I called post-pandemic mode, largely living a very normal life."
