4 years ago, Laura was a student in my digital marketing class.

Today, she is the new Head of Content at @ProductLed.

Here's the story behind it. 🧵
In 2017, I was a part-time marketing instructor at a Toronto tech college for designers, creators, developers, and digital marketers.

Here's my nerdy mugshot on their wall of teachers:
The digital marketing program was a small 3-month cohort-based course.

Laura enrolled with a journalism degree and experience.

She wanted to learn more about the technical side of marketing—google analytics, SEO, and paid ads.
One of the things that made her really stand out was her questions.

She asked probing questions, particularly about topics that she wasn’t too familiar with.
In a classroom and training setting, there are no dumb questions.

Good teachers get excited when someone asks a question.

It shows that people:
(1) Are paying attention
(2) Care enough to know more about the topic
One of the topics that Laura asked a lot about is Google Analytics.

To her, Google Analytics was an alien language.

Today, one of the first things she asked was, “Can I get access to ProductLed’s GA, search console, and SEMrush account?" 😄
One other thing that Laura did really well was that she stayed in touch with her teachers.

On my birthday, she sent me an email.
Some things I love about this email:

> She thanked me for the advice I gave her.

> She updated me on her job status—She got hired!

> She indicated that she wanted to stay in touch.
Sure enough, she stayed in touch.

A month later, she told me about this useful SEO Chrome extension she found.

I still use it today. :-)
I ended up hiring her for a few copywriting projects. Laura was always professional and delivered on time.
My experience working with her was so great, I happily referred her to friends I know who were looking for content work
Fast forward to late 2020. Wes and I were looking for someone to lead content at ProductLed.

I couldn’t think of a better person to work with than Laura.

So I reached out to see if she’s interested.
I hired her to edit a few chapters of my upcoming book “Product-Led Onboarding.”

And wow, she turned my thrash writing into gold! 🤣

Download the first chapter of the book below and compare it to a pre-Laura version. You'll see!

I loved her work so much that she became the primary book editor for Product-Led Onboarding!

We also hired her as a freelancer to create a content strategy plan for ProductLed. Again, I was blown away.
A few weeks ago, we offered her a full-time role as Head of Content at ProductLed.

Laura is a Canadian based out of Cusco, Peru.

Everyone, say hi to her!
In summary, here are three things that Laura did to make her stand out from the crowd:

1/ She showed enthusiasm and willingness to learn in class.

2/ She stayed in touch with her teachers.

3/ She delivered great work consistently.
The lesson here:

Stay in touch with your teachers. They want to know what you're up to.

Most teachers live to see their students do better than them.
And if you’re looking for an amazing content writer and editor, look elsewhere.

Because Laura is NOT for hire. 🤣

How would you explain what "marketing" is to a 5-year-old?

Last week, I asked this on Twitter.

Here are the 5 best responses: 🧵
1/ I love @Marie_Haynes idea of using something that a 5-year-old can relate with to explain marketing.
I'd take this even further and ask that child:

• "What is your favorite toy?"
• "How did you learn about it?"
• "What made you want it?"

This can lead to a discussion about commercials, ads, word-of-mouth, and so much more!

Podcasts are the ultimate form of content.

With one podcast episode, you can create at least 11 other types of content!

Here's how—with examples: 🧵👇
𝟏/ 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐓𝐮𝐛𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨𝐬

Instead of recording podcasts privately via Zoom or Riverside, I’ve started doing it live on YouTube using Streamyard.

Great way to get more engagement from your audience.
Here’s a live podcast recording I did with @SeanEllis, @EthanMGarr, and @Wes_Bush for the @ProductLed Podcast.

As a marketer, having a side project is one of the best ways to learn new skills.

Side projects are yours, which means you’re more incentivized to learn well.

Here are five marketing skills I learned through side projects. 🧵

In 2013, I put up my blog on ramlijohn.com and wrote an article each week for almost three years.

I don't write there as much as now.
I was blogging a lot about Lean Startup back then.

One of my articles got noticed by the organizers of the Lean Startup Conference.

That resulted in being invited to San Francisco to give a talk in front of 6k people!

I'm trying out a Twitter experiment:

Live on Twitter Spaces every Friday for 4 weeks: The #MarketingRant show

The goal: I get a marketer to rant about a topic they’re passionate about.
The first one is tomorrow (Friday) at 1 pm EDT with @amandanat. 🔥

Amanda is going on a #MarketingRant about common writing mistakes marketers make.

Amanda has a journalism background and is currently the Head of Content at @ShipBob.
Why Twitter Spaces?

Simple—I’ve already built an audience here. So has the marketers I’ll be talking to.

This is another way to build and connect with our audience.

I wrote a whole thread about it below:
