How would you explain what "marketing" is to a 5-year-old?

Last week, I asked this on Twitter.

Here are the 5 best responses: ๐Ÿงต
1/ I love @marie_haynes idea of using something that a 5-year-old can relate with to explain marketing.
I'd take this even further and ask that child:

โ€ข "What is your favorite toy?"
โ€ข "How did you learn about it?"
โ€ข "What made you want it?"

This can lead to a discussion about commercials, ads, word-of-mouth, and so much more!
2/ @byosko takes a personal approach to this.

It's so visual.

I can see this 5-year-old nagging his or her parents about something they want.
Marketing is a battle for attention and mindspace.

If you can't stop thinking about a product so much so that you nag others and tell them about it, that's marketing at play.
People don't often buy things with their rational brains.

Most purchasing decisions are emotionalโ€”even in the B2B space.

That's why great marketing uses emotional triggers to get people to buy.
This is such a good example of a "try it before you buy" approach.

And it works!

For example, Costco saw a 600% increase in frozen pizza sales by giving away samples!

This concept works in the B2B space as well. That's what product-led growth is all about.

How can we help users experience the product's value BEFORE they buy it?

By applying this to B2B, it creates a better buying experience for most people.
I immediately thought about the commercials I saw as a kid from a fast-food restaurant with the jingle:

"Pa ra paaa paaa! I'm lovin' it!"

Can you guess which fast-food chain I'm talking about?
It's so catchy! But it made me associate good nuggets with McDonalds.

But of course, as per Corey, the BEST nuggets is from Chick Fil A ๐Ÿคฃ

4 years ago, Laura was a student in my digital marketing class.

Today, she is the new Head of Content at @ProductLed.

Here's the story behind it. ๐Ÿงต
In 2017, I was a part-time marketing instructor at a Toronto tech college for designers, creators, developers, and digital marketers.

Here's my nerdy mugshot on their wall of teachers:
The digital marketing program was a small 3-month cohort-based course.

Laura enrolled with a journalism degree and experience.

She wanted to learn more about the technical side of marketingโ€”google analytics, SEO, and paid ads.

Podcasts are the ultimate form of content.

With one podcast episode, you can create at least 11 other types of content!

Here's howโ€”with examples: ๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ‘‡

Instead of recording podcasts privately via Zoom or Riverside, Iโ€™ve started doing it live on YouTube using Streamyard.

Great way to get more engagement from your audience.
Hereโ€™s a live podcast recording I did with @SeanEllis, @EthanMGarr, and @Wes_Bush for the @ProductLed Podcast.

As a marketer, having a side project is one of the best ways to learn new skills.

Side projects are yours, which means youโ€™re more incentivized to learn well.

Here are five marketing skills I learned through side projects. ๐Ÿงต

In 2013, I put up my blog on ramlijohn.com and wrote an article each week for almost three years.

I don't write there as much as now.
I was blogging a lot about Lean Startup back then.

One of my articles got noticed by the organizers of the Lean Startup Conference.

That resulted in being invited to San Francisco to give a talk in front of 6k people!

I'm trying out a Twitter experiment:

Live on Twitter Spaces every Friday for 4 weeks: The #MarketingRant show

The goal: I get a marketer to rant about a topic theyโ€™re passionate about.
The first one is tomorrow (Friday) at 1 pm EDT with @amandanat. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Amanda is going on a #MarketingRant about common writing mistakes marketers make.

Amanda has a journalism background and is currently the Head of Content at @ShipBob.
Why Twitter Spaces?

Simpleโ€”Iโ€™ve already built an audience here. So has the marketers Iโ€™ll be talking to.

This is another way to build and connect with our audience.

I wrote a whole thread about it below:
