WHY ARE TESLA VEHICLES SO POPULAR ?

YESTERDAY we looked at the TESLA MODEL 3 across its three different versions

TODAY let us look at the THIRD COHORT of BEVs with 200 KW - 300 KW motors

- and we shall overlay in Red what we have seen for the three versions of TESLA MODEL 3
The Tesla Model 3 Long Range and Performance will beat any of these vehicles in 0-100 km/hr Acceleration

The Audi e-Tron is a surprising laggard

With the Polestar 2 showing up as the best of the cohort outside of Tesla
The Tesla vehicles clearly dominate in Maximum Speed too

- with the Porsche Taycan being the only serious challenger
Tesla Model 3 offers two Battery Sizes of 58 kWh and 75 kWh

Mercedes EQC is carrying the biggest battery at 80 kWh
All of these illustrated vehicles are massively hungrier in their Power Consumption than any of the Tesla Model 3 versions
Which gives them all much lower Range for comparable battery capacities
Weight is obviously a factor with these vehicles being larger and heavier

- with the Audi e-Tron and Mercedes EQC being much the heaviest in Unladen Weight
The variation in Price is quite dramatic across this cohort

And credit goes to Polestar and Volvo for the most price-competitive offerings
This naturally translates into a big difference in monthly Cost Of Ownership

- with the expected cost of Depreciation causing the biggest variations between vehicles
And here is that same monthly cost translated into a Cost Per Kilometre for each vehicle

This suggests that the Polestar 2 is certainly a vehicle to watch
This evidence suggests that the larger Tesla Model Y should be VERY COMPETITIVE when it is launched into the European market

And tomorrow we will look at some summary analysis of these difference metrics across the set of vehicles that we have analyzed with the ADAC database

WHY ARE TESLA VEHICLES SO POPULAR ?

YESTERDAY we looked at the SECOND COHORT of BEVs with 125 KW - 200 KW motors

TOMORROW we shall look at the THIRD COHORT of BEVs with 200 KW - 300 KW motors

TODAY let's take a closer look at what they are competing with

- the TESLA MODEL 3 Image
The Tesla Model 3 has the fastest Acceleration in its class, and in its Performance version it is beaten by very few other vehicles Image
The Model 3 Performance is rated for a top Speed of 261 km per hour Image

"52% OF CAR OWNERS EXPECT TO OWN AN EV IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS"

Let me try and put this in perspective :

Imagine that there are 125 million households in the U.S. in 2031

And that 90% of them own a car in 2031

And 50% of them own an EV

That is say 56 million EVs in the U.S.
56 million EVs is 20% of today's U.S. Vehicle Fleet of about 280 million vehicles

And it would require a supply of 5.6 million vehicles per year on average

- just for the U.S. market

- and just to achieve a 20% conversion rate Image
If we adjust that average annual number to a triangular ramp, the number to be supplied in 2031 would be in excess of 11 million vehicles

Tesla currently holds about 80% of the U.S. BEV market

Even if that falls to 50% Tesla would have to supply 5.5 million vehicles in the U.S. Image

WHY ARE TESLA VEHICLES SO POPULAR ?

YESTERDAY we looked at the entry-level Tesla Model 3 SR+ relative to its ICEV counterparts and a FIRST COHORT of BEVs :

- BEVs with 80 KW - 125 KW motors

TODAY we will do the same for the SECOND COHORT :

- BEVs with 125 KW - 200 KW motors
Once again, the Tesla Model 3 SR+ outperforms all of these counterparts in its Acceleration by a significant margin

And this is the most striking feature of all Tesla vehicles

- they are really quick and responsive
The Tesla Model 3 SR+ also has a much higher top Speed

So Tesla is selling PERFORMANCE even with this entry-level offering

- while others are just selling a vehicle

WHY DOES TESLA HAVE 25% MARKET SHARE IN BEVs ?

Clearly the answer is that they have the most popular vehicles with the widest global distribution of any BEV manufacturer

But there is more to it than that . . .
WHY ARE TESLA VEHICLES SO POPULAR ?

There are many answers to this

But one Big One dominates the rest, and you see it and hear about it all the time

- and several others provide strong support

Let's go to Europe where there is a greater of competitors relative to the USA
The Tesla Model 3 is very popular in Europe, and as we have shown, the entry level Model 3 SR+ has already beaten comparable ICEVs on Price, Performance, and overall Cost of Ownership

When we turn our attention to the BEV space, we hear a lot about the vehicles shown here :

BEVs vs ICEVs - AN UPDATE 20210515

When we first found this report recently we wanted to know more detail

But we discovered that the data was now stale because the ICEV manufacturers had responded by issuing new updates to their vehicles

So we resolved to refresh the analysis
BMW now claims 210 kW for their 330d Diesel, up from 190 kW before, and a smaller increase for their 330i Petrol counterpart

And all of the ICEVs claim they have higher or equal Maximum Speeds to the Tesla Model SR+
But they have difficulty matching the Model 3 SR+ in 0-100 km per hour acceleration
