"When the #COVID19 pandemic erupted over a year ago, we faced a fundamental challenge:
We knew that 💉, rapid diagnostics & therapeutics were on the way, but we knew from experience that market forces alone would leave the 🌍’s poorest & most vulnerable people behind"-@DrTedros
"Today we can prevent #COVID19 anywhere with new vaccines.
We can detect it anywhere with new rapid tests.
We can save lives everywhere with oxygen & dexamethasone.
We have a unique mechanism for making these life-saving tools available everywhere: the @ACTAccelerator"-@DrTedros
"We have demonstrated that the @ACTAccelerator works: we have shipped 70 million vaccines to 125 countries and economies, as well as hundreds of millions of tests and supplies of oxygen and dexamethasone"-@DrTedros#GlobalHealthSummit
"But as we all know, vaccine nationalism, vaccine diplomacy and severe supply constraints have left us with a yawning chasm between the world’s vaccine haves and have nots"-@DrTedros#GlobalHealthSummit
"It is not just vaccines. Low-income countries are testing at rates up to 100 times lower than in high-income countries.
Many low- and middle-income countries are also experiencing devastating shortages of oxygen and other essential therapeutics"-@DrTedros#GlobalHealthSummit
"We now have an opportunity to fix the global imbalance:
1⃣we need to close the $18.5 billion funding gap for the @ACTAccelerator.
2⃣we need countries to donate vaccines immediately through #COVAX – which is the agreed global mechanism for distributing vaccines"-@DrTedros
"We welcome the generous announcements made today, and in the coming weeks and months, we will need hundreds of millions more doses. And we need companies to help make donations happen fast, by giving COVAX the first right of refusal on all uncommitted doses by 2021"-@DrTedros
"3⃣ we must urgently and dramatically scale up production of all of these tools, through voluntary licensing, sharing technology and know-how, and waiving intellectual property rights"-@DrTedros#GlobalHealthSummit
"We are at a critical juncture. The @ACTAccelerator is a historic, forward-thinking initiative based on the principles of solidarity and equity. But we have not yet achieved what we set out to achieve"-@DrTedros#GlobalHealthSummit
"We must harness the same urgency with which vaccines, tests and treatments were developed to distribute them as far and fast as possible.
"We welcome the declaration, esp. the commitment to support & enhance the existing multilateral health architecture for preparedness, prevention, detection & response, with an appropriately, sustainably & predictably funded, effective WHO at its centre"-@DrTedros
As of 31 Dec 2020, #COVID19 had infected over 82 million people & killed over 1.8 million. But preliminary estimates suggest the total number of global “excess deaths” directly & indirectly attributable to COVID-19 in 2020 is 1.2 million higher than the official figures reported.
The term “excess deaths” describes deaths beyond what would have been expected under “normal” conditions. It captures not only confirmed deaths, but also #COVID19 deaths that were not correctly diagnosed & reported, as well as deaths attributable to the overall crisis conditions.
Every year HIV, viral hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections account for 2.3M deaths, and 1.2M cancers
🆕WHO report highlights achievements, gaps, and actions towards eliminating these diseases as public health threats by 2030 👉bit.ly/3yohFH3
Each day 1 million new sexually transmitted infections are acquired; this burden is too high.
WHO report shows how this can be reduced.

✅9.4 M🧑🤝🧑receive hepatitis C cure
✅Progress in triple elimination of mother to child transmission of syphilis, HIV,& Hepatitis B
✅Decline in mortality related to HIV & AIDS
WHO, @FAO, @OIEAnimalHealth and @UNEP have come together to launch a new One Health High-Level Expert Panel to improve understanding of how diseases with the potential to trigger pandemics, emerge and spread
The panel will advise on the development of a long-term global plan of action to avert outbreaks of diseases like H5N1 avian influenza; MERS; #Ebola; #Zika, &, possibly, #COVID19. Three quarters of all emerging infectious diseases originate in animals.
The panel will operate under the One Health Approach, which recognizes the links between the health of people, animals, and the environment and highlights the need for specialists in multiple sectors to address any health threats and prevent disruption to agri-food systems.
"First of all, I would like to thank the governments of #France and #Germany for their leadership and support in establishing the One Health High-Level Expert Panel. Its creation fulfils a commitment made at the @ParisPeaceForum last November"-@DrTedros
"I also want to give a special thanks to the co-chairs, Professor Markotter and Professor Mettenleiter, and the other panelists for lending us their time and expertise"-@DrTedros
