🚨 BIG NEWS 🚨

Thomson Reuters is facing shareholder calls to investigate its business for human rights abuses b/c of its work w/ICE.

The two biggest shareholder advisors in the world, ISS & Glass Lewis, just came out *in favor* of an investigation.

This is huge for investors.
This is how it works: Shareholders can ask the board of directors to change company policies or review business practices.

A shareholder in Thomson Reuters, @BCGEU, called for a human rights assessment b/c Thomson Reuters works for ICE.

That proposal is now gaining steam.
Thomson Reuters has done this for years: They gave ICE access to a massive database w/hundreds of millions of recordsβ€”names, addresses, utility bills, etc.β€”on some 171 million people.

This supercharges surveillance & deportations. In one operation, a couple of ICE agents terrorized an entire community by sitting in their cars, w/their laptops, inputting & sharing data.

They then started to "disappear" people.

And Thomson Reuters is still working w/ICE, even though they no longer have this specific contract.

They're still providing ICE w/software to monitor immigrants, monitor activists, & facilitate ICE's deportations crackdown.

And that'll happen under Biden or Trump.
That's the work that's being challenged right now: Shareholders are calling on Thomson Reuters to investigate whether its contracts violate human rights.

ISS & Glass Lewis agreeing is huge, it means mainstream & heavy-hitting investors will vote for this.
Thomson Reuters must stop working w/ICE. It has done irreparable harm by facilitating deportations under Obama, Trump, & now Biden, violating human rights & expanding a surveillance dragnet.

It must cut its contracts, & investors must stand firm on this.

NEW: LexisNexis, the huge legal research firm, signed a $16.8 million contract w/ICE, giving access to billions of personal records, like credit histories, license plates, phone data, & more.

ICE then uses this data to target & deport us.

This is a new frontier: These data brokers are increasingly working w/police & agencies like ICE & CBP, selling vast troves of personal info.

This lets ICE agents pinpoint people they want to deport, knowing their addresses, phone & internet subscriptions, DMV records, etc.
We've seen how this supercharges ICE's deportations: Two agents sitting in a car entering data can terrorize an entire community. Their information is entered into a computer, their records are pulled out, & then people start disappearing

Today’s passage of #DreamAndPromise by the House is the result of decades of deep organizing by immigrant communities & reflects the urgent need to provide protection from deportation.

But the addition of harsh criminalization provisions in this version is very concerning.
The policing & mass incarceration systems in this country are fundamentally rigged against Black & Latinx ppl, and the #DreamAndPromise Act is no exception.

#HR6 is designed to strip access to Biden's promise of immigration reform from people who have experienced police contact.
Criminalization born of a racist system cant be the measure we use to determine who belongs & who goes.

Instead of extending access to undocumented communities of color #HR6 has punitive provisions that could make anyone who’s committed a misdemeanor ineligible for legal status.

KEEP CALM. PATIENCE. Let's be honest, this election is going to be like no otherβ€” the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted how we vote, & must ensure everyone has their say and that every ballot is counted! (2/6)
WE MUST COUNT. The GOP is a political minority! The country is changing. So Trump & the GOP are trying to change up the rules in the middle of the game, to preserve power. (3/6)

When our ppl began to ask us:

"How did ICE know that I lived here? How did they know that so & so is my cousin? How did they know that I worked at this place and would travel from this location everyday?"
β€”Jacinta GonzΓ‘lez

We realized that ICE was accessing our private data.
This realization lead us to begin researching & uncovering the tech companies propping up ICE's massive data surveillance system.

You can read the report here πŸ‘‡

Thru our research we learned that over 15% of DHS's budget is exclusively dedicated to data management.

That means the surveillance, arrest & deportation of our ppl is a lucrative business for tech.

And thus, we began to call out those tech companies:
