As indigenous practitioners, we raised concerns re: Alabama's #yoga law, which strips all references to its Hindu roots. We clearly noted that we welcome ALL to practice but don't want Yoga stripped off its cultural roots. Cultural appreciation, not cultural appropriation. 2/n
Media houses such as @washingtonpost covered our perspective. Quote: "Yes, it has roots in Hinduism, and it’s a Hindu practice, but it’s a gift Hindus have shared with the world." 3/n washingtonpost.com/education/2021…
Yet, Prof Truschke calls our position "tongue twisters" and a dislike of "dissent." How hypocritical for someone who has made a career out of disparaging our deities, silencing our voices, speaking over us and blocking our earnest attempts to engage! 4/n
By denying us the right to opine upon laws that have an impact on our religion and culture and calling us "Hindu Right," she advances bigotry, hatred and #Hinduphobia against our community. 5/n
Her tweets are a great example of the #WhiteSavior and colonizer complex - first tell Hindus what's "wrong" with them by portraying them as savages and backward and then "educate" them via the lens of Aryans, "caste", Sati, "criminal tribes," "misogynist pig," etc....6/n
...Telling them ONLY the #WhiteSavior knows the best and how to "save" Hindus from themselves. 7/n
According to Jamie Willer on ##WhiteSavior narratives: "The narratives are designed to teach Brown and Black individuals they are not capable of making decisions for themselves and their communities." 8/n scholarworks.merrimack.edu/cgi/viewconten…
Then comes dehumanization, which "involves reducing a complex group of people into one simplified stereotype, attempting to systemically deny individuals the ability to define their own identity and reality at the cultural level." 9/n
"As a form of systemic racism, the white
savior complex controls the production and maintenance of single stories filled with symbolic
codes of dehumanizing racialized stereotypes." 10/n
Hindus are dehumanized by portraying them as oppressors, "Hindu Nationalists," "cow piss drinkers," misogynists, a "band of right wingers," etc. who lack any cultural greatness or sophistication. An art and narrative that Prof Truschke and Co. excel in. 11/n
When Hindus protest, Prof Truschke and Co. "Cry Hindutva" and try to silence dissent and critique. 12/n academia.edu/40082617/Cry_H…
Such behavior is a painful reminder of the practices used by colonizers to deny indigenous people a voice and a representation of their narrative. Doing so allows the #WhiteSavior to maintain a position of power and privilege and control the narrative. 13/n
Coming back to #yoga and Hinduism. Prof Truschke's attempts to portray us as "band of right wingers" is tantamount to the maintenance of this power and privilege because only SHE can tell Hindus how they should talk about their culture. 14/n
Interestingly, #Bhagavadgita, one of the most famous Hindu texts is full of references to Yoga. But...15/n
...that doesn't suit Prof Truschke's narrative, which claims that the Gita "rationalizes mass slaughter." This narrative fits well in her bigotry and peddling of #Hinduphobia. 14/n cohna.org/wp-content/upl…
We don't claim to represent ALL American or Canadian Hindus. However, we will not be silenced or sit on the sidelines when laws and policies impacting our religion and culture are being passed. Attacking us for doing so is nothing short of racism and bigotry. #NoWhiteSavior. 15/n
THREAD: PART 2. Prof Truschke's #WhiteSavior & victim card complex continues. Trying to paint Hindu groups as anti-Muslim, when we never said anything about Islam in our response to her allegations. #RacistTruschke. 1/n
We respect everyone's right to practice their religion, but not the #WhiteSavior's self-proclaimed right to disparage ours or silence us. 2/n
Again, she tries to create #Hinduphobia and a fake narrative by linking our response and legit concerns about Alabama to "Hindu Right." In doing so, she continues to validate our position of how she is the #WhiteSavior and the queen of Hinduphobia. 3/n
THREAD: Indian Americans from various backgrounds protest @SCCgov's efforts to include "caste" as a category in their anti-discrimination policies. So, what is the problem and why should the Indian diaspora care about such a legislation or policy? A dozen reasons follow! 1/n
Policy seeks to have taxpayer supported bodies “define” Hinduism and how it is “deemed” to be practiced – a clear violation of the right to freedom of religion. 2/n
Thread: @RepJeremyGray. #Namaste! Thank you for being a voice of reason for this bill. Yes, #yoga has its roots and its tied to Hinduism. But, Hindus have never imposed their beliefs on anyone. So...1/n time.com/5946284/alabam…
...there is no need for people to be "allergic" to yoga, Namaste, mantras, chanting, Sanskrit words, etc. Hindus have shared yoga as a gift to make the world a more peaceful and harmonious place - something that is much needed in our society today. 2/n
Stripping "Namaste" away is an unfortunate attempt to de-link an indigenous practice from its roots and an example of #Culturalappropriation. We stand against such attempts and encourage people to acknowledge the roots while sharing in the benefits of this wonderful gift. 3/n
THREAD: CoHNA is extremely disturbed by the bigotry and Hinduphobia being peddled by Prof Audrey Truschke. Moreover, we are extremely concerned that @RutgersU and @Rutgers_Newark is emphatically defending the professor under the veil of "academic freedom". 1/n
As the following petition shows, Rutgers students (Hindu and non-Hindu) do not support bigotry on campus and are calling upon @RutgersU to take immediate action. We stand with these students in their call. 2/n docs.google.com/document/d/1-z…
Hindu students are facing vitriol for speaking up, including insults like "dotheads," "Hindu Nazis," etc. Does @RUDiversity consider this type of vitriol resulting from Prof Truschke's supporter a fine example of "diversity and inclusion"? Hindu students are traumatized. 3/n
The callous usage of such words amounts to blatant propaganda and a thinly veiled attack on the Hindu community, and promotes hatred and animosity towards Hindus in the US and worldwide. Inserting it into the headline provides a giant megaphone to amplify #Hinduphobia. 2/n
By using "Brahmin" as a disparaging label, @ZaidJilani falsely paints an entire community (completely unrelated to the issue being discussed) as greedy, elitist and oppressive and furthers a colonial and racist narrative. 3/n
@WSJ@PikettyLeMonde@ZaidJilani peddling Hinduphobia and anti-Hindu bigotry by using "Brahmin Left." We expect better journalism rather than promoting hatred against our community by falsely equating India's social dynamics with US politics. 1/n wsj.com/articles/cance…
By using "Brahmin" pejoratively, you are painting an entire community (unrelated to this issue) as greedy, elitist and oppressive and furthering a colonial and racist narrative along with prejudice against Hindus. 2/n
The callous usage of such words also amounts to blatant propaganda and a thinly veiled attack on the Hindu community. It can lead to serious long term repercussions for Hindus in the United States and globally. 3/n
