"The public is much less engaged or extreme in its views than you’d suspect... The US history of culture wars suggests we’re at a very dangerous moment... Where America leads, Britain often follows – but we can still choose a different path."
Across a whole series of terms connected to the culture wars, the majority said they’d heard at best “a little” about them, with large proportions saying they’d never heard of common media & political tropes such as “cancel culture” & “microagressions”.
Framing matters: the term that's cut through most is “white privilege”, with over half of the UK public saying they’d heard a lot about it.
While half of white British people agree it’s easier to get ahead if you’re white, only 29% agree there is “white privilege” in Britain. 🤔
It’s good news that the UK public is too sensible or distracted to get caught up in this rhetoric as yet, but it would be a mistake to relax. The public aren't passive recipients of messages from on high, but political & media discussions can be catalysts that encourage division.

Various bankers & journalists have recently been very upbeat about the prospects for Britain's economic recovery:
"The British economy will be booming. It is not yet widely appreciated just how big this boom will be" - Andrew Neil.
My advice: don't believe the hype.
Last week the Bank of England said: "Economic growth in Britain this year should not be confused with a normal boom... economy shrank almost 10% last year, biggest slump in 300 years".
While the opinion polls show a 'vaccine bounce' for the Tories, again: don't believe the hype.
A fascinating new opinion poll by the respected Pew Research Center, discussed in the Financial Times, tells a fascinating story about how a clear majority in the US & Western Europe support large scale, systemic change.
Today, Boris Johnson meets only the 2nd EU leader since Brexit: grotesque far-right racist authoritarian, Viktor Orbán, who doesn't want "our" colour mixed with others.
The Biden administration describes Hungary as 'a totalitarian regime'.
No 10 calls Orbán 'our friend'.
Meeting a corrupt far-right anti-democratic authoritarian, with strong links to the deregulatory free-market think tank network which uses dark money to roll back worker, consumer, democratic & environmental protections, sends an awful signal to the world. opendemocracy.net/en/5050/dark-m…
As we now know, Boris Johnson & his chaotic Govt care not one jot for truth, minorities, or morality: they lie with impunity; deny structural racism; hand multi-£million contracts to their mates; & prioritise money & power over tens of thousands of lives.
Tomorrow, the UK's PM Boris Johnson talks to his "friend" #racist far-right anti-democratic authoritarian PM Viktor Orbán, who has spoken of not wanting "our" colour mixed with others & of Hungary "defending itself against the migrant flow & invasion”.
On Friday, anti-democratic right-wing populist nationalist authoritarian PM with a long history of racist comments Boris Johnson, is meeting with Putin ally Viktor Orbán.
Under Orbán's leadership, Hungary has experienced democratic backsliding & a lurch towards authoritarianism.
Orbán's populism, social-national conservatism, soft Euroscepticism & advocacy of what he describes as an "illiberal state" have attracted significant European & international attention & criticism from domestic & foreign leaders, including Angela Merkel, but praise from Johnson.
Orbán has gradually undermined the rule of law, established tight control over the country’s independent institutions, adopted a new constitution & fundamentally changing electoral laws & the system of campaign financing.
Johnson's 👏 Govt 👏 is 👏 doing👏 the 👏same.#NotADrill
Matthew Goodwin. Ha ha ha ha! 'Universities are full of lefty Foucault-loving bastards! Why would people think about such fripperies as inequality, homophobia, racism & sexism?' I suppose if you hate nuance, critical thought, & know fouc-all about Foucault, he might have a point.
Not a bad show. In fact, Foucault has been claimed by neoliberals as well as 'radicals'. No doubt every right-wing free-market gobshite crank will see it as yet more evidence of the 'anti-British anti-woke identity politics snowflakes' at the @BBC destroying western civilization!
Impartial & sensible Paul Dacre, lined up by opportunist liar Boris Johnson & the the @BBC-hating Tories to be the new @Ofcom & thus BBC regulator, attacked the BBC as a "monolith" pursuing "cultural Marxism" - a far-right antisemitic conspiracy theory.😳
The ever nuanced & professional Paul Dacre - incidentally with *zero* experience in broadcasting - said the @BBC "which glories in being open-minded, has become a closed-thought system operating a kind of Orwellian Newspeak."
Oh the irony.
In another nuanced & impartial critique, Paul Dacre was critical of David Cameron's alleged "sidelining of Thatcherism & his banishing of all talk of lower taxes, lower immigration & euroscepticism (which) are all part of the Tories' blood sacrifice to the @BBC god."
