Interestingly, Sinovac is a whopping 97% effective in reducing death numbers. Pfizer is 80% effective.

In stopping patients needing to be admitted to intensive care, Sinovac is 95% effective; Pfizer is 99% effective.
And as this table shows, Uruguay is well ahead of almost the entirety of the rest of the continent in numbers of people vaccinated per population. Only Chile is further advanced.

The idea of using Sinovac with most people was to stop them dying. Clearly, that theory is being vindicated.
Pfizer's lower success rate on that is likely because it's been used for those either more susceptible to begin with or more in danger (doctors, nurses etc).
