Thoughts on the Nestle story
#Thread #NESTLE @Nestle

Context:
- FT accessed an internal presentation of the Company

- >60% of mainstream F&B drinks pdts don’t meet health stds

- 37% of Co’s products achieve star rating of 3.5 under Australia’s health star rating system

.@Nestle to @CNBCTV18Live
- Assessing part of F&B portfolio to be measured against external nutrition profiling systems

- About half of our sales, infant nutrition, specialized health products etc, not covered by these systems

(So only 30% of overall pdts “unhealthy”)

(2/n)
Impact on @NestleIndia?

- Not much, in my opinion as India portfolio is much smaller than overall global portfolio

- Co has been working towards reducing Sodium & Sugar in their products over the last 7 years or so

Why is health & nutrition not part of India’s packaged food lexicon yet?

1) As a nation, we consume home cooked food for nutrition & packaged for indulgence

2) Organized Food & Grocery accounts for <5% of our overall retail market

4/n
3) We're still coming to terms with lower order things like - Hygiene standards, Ingredient Safety, Water Cleanliness

4) Globally as well, this came to the fore only some years ago with increasing awareness around the unhealthy nature of Processed, Packaged Food and ESG.

5/n
So what happens now?

Nothing, all companies will gradually re-work their ingredients and make them less unhealthy over the next few years.

Will it be as big as the Maggi crisis?

No. That was an issue of possible contamination. This, is an informed choice by the consumer!
