Memo to @SenatorSinema: in 1890s states like Mississippi rushed to disenfranchise Black voters, House passed bill to stop it but Senate filibustered legislation protecting voting rights & we got Jim Crow. Now history will repeat itself if Dems don’t act motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
"The same pattern that existed during Reconstruction—the enfranchisement of Black voters, followed by the manipulation of election laws to throw out Black votes, culminating in laws passed to legally disenfranchise Black voters—is repeating itself today"
In 1890 Mississippi rewrote constitution to disenfranchise Black voters

That year House passed bill to protect voting rights but killed by Senate filibuster

By 1907 every Southern state had changed constitution to keep Blacks from voting & Black turnout fell from 61% to 2%
Failure to pass federal legislation protecting voting rights at end of Reconstruction led directly to Jim Crow & disenfranchisement of Black voters

Similarly, failure to pass HR1 & John Lewis Voting Rights Act will allow GOP to undermine fair elections for next decade & beyond
"by 1907 every Southern state had changed constitution to disenfranchise Black voters, through poll taxes, literacy tests, property requirements, etc. # of Black registered voters in MS fell from 130,483 in 1876 to 1,264 by 1900; in LA from 130,000 in 1896 to 1,342 in 1904"
"We had a multi-racial democracy in the United States and it was taken away"

If Dems don't act to protect voting rights, history will repeat itself

New cover story @motherjones: GOP enacting greatest assault on voting rights since end of Reconstruction and if Congress doesn’t pass federal legislation to stop new wave of Jim Crow 2.0 voter suppression laws Second Reconstruction will end like the first motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
“The same pattern that existed during Reconstruction—the enfranchisement of Black voters, followed by the manipulation of election laws to throw out Black votes, culminating in laws passed to legally disenfranchise Black voters—is repeating itself today”
"the vicious white backlash that has followed Biden's victory—an attempt to overturn the election, an insurrection at the US Capitol, a record number of bills to restrict voting rights—has all the makings of a concerted attempt to end the second Reconstruction"

If Texas House Democrats can walk off the floor to kill voter suppression bill, then Senate Dems can kill filibuster to pass HR1 & John Lewis Voting Rights Act
"This is a now-or-never moment in American democracy," said @JoaquinCastrotx. "If we don’t act now, then our democracy is not going to look the same either in 2022 or 2024" washingtonpost.com/politics/texas…
Texas Dem Rep @TMFtx: "Breaking quorum is about the equivalent of crawling on our knees begging the president and the United States Congress to give us the For the People Act and give us the John Lewis Voting Rights Act" washingtonpost.com/politics/texas…

How GOP voter suppression works in Texas:

-you can vote with gun permit but not student ID

-no online voter registration

-must be deputized to register voters

-voters under 65 can’t use fear of covid to vote by mail

-750 polling places closed since SCOTUS gutted VRA
Texas is already one of hardest states to vote in. That’s why it ranked 44th in voter turnout in 2020

Now #SB7 would make it even harder to vote & easier for GOP to overturn elections
Texas Senate started debate on voter suppression bill #SB7 making it harder to vote & easier to overturn elections at 12:30 am last night and passed it at 6:08 am this morning. Democracy quite literally dying in the dark

New: Iowa House Democrats have filed ethics complaints against Heritage Action & Heritage Foundation for boasting to donors about writing voter suppression laws in leaked video reported by @MotherJones but failing to register as lobbyists in state motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
"We did it quickly & we did it quietly," Heritage bragged about Iowa voter suppression bill. "Honestly, nobody even noticed. My team looked at each other & we’re like, ‘It can’t be that easy.'"

But legislative Rs say group lying & didn't register as lobbyists as required by law
Heritage claimed to write "three provisions" in Iowa voter suppression bill, including one that has put nearly 300,000 voters at risk of being purged

Iowa watchdog agency also beginning investigation into whether group lobbied Gov Reynolds & didn’t disclose it

SCOOP from me & @NickSurgey: In new leaked video dark money group Heritage Action brags to top donors about writing “model legislation” making it harder to vote in GA TX IA FL AZ. This is proof of massive coordinated right-wing voter suppression campaign motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
Must-watch video: Heritage admits it is writing voter suppression laws for GOP state legislators

“we actually draft them for them, or we give them the model legislation so it has that grassroots, from-the-bottom-up type of vibe”

Heritage Action says it wrote “8 key provisions” in Georgia voter suppression law, “19 provisions” in Texas House bill & “3 provisions” of Iowa law. Dark $ fueling voter suppression

“Republicans who adopt these model laws should be ashamed of themselves” says @marceelias Image

Breaking: Ron DeSantis signs Georgia-style voter suppression bill #SB90 restricting mail ballot drop boxes, making it harder to vote by mail, criminalizing giving food/water to voters in line & expanding partisan challenges to vote counting. Only Fox was allowed to cover signing
It’s extremely telling that DeSantis claims new Florida voter suppression law intended to boost “election integrity” but barred all media except Fox News from covering bill signing. It was a Fox & Friends “exclusive”
DeSantis called Florida a model for election integrity but just signed new bill rolling back voting access after 680,000 more Dems than Rs voted by mail & Black share of mail voting doubled in 2020 motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
