So, for anyone nuts enough to try, I now think I know how to do Berlin-Belgrade by 🚅, during the easing of COVID restrictions...
Good news: you can do it for €48,19 single when I need to go (not a typo!) but if you want a bed in the night train it gets horribly costly!
🧵
The CHEAP but not very comfortable route
Berlin-Budapest overnight train, but in a seat (no sleeping car because of COVID)
Then Budapest-Subotica-Novi Sad by train
Novi Sad-Belgrade by bus
Trip time: 27hrs
€48,19 single
The COMFORTABLE but expensive route
Berlin-Vienna by NightJet, single compartment sleeping car
Then Vienna-Budapest-Subotica-Novi Sad by train
Novi Sad-Belgrade by bus
Trip time: 27hrs
€238,09 single
The ALPINE route
Berlin-München-Bregenz train
Bregenz-Zagreb night train (single compartment)
Zagreb-Belgrade train
(change Innsbruck on return instead)
No buses 🎉
Trip time: 30hrs
€225,05 single
Options ruled out as unworkable
- going via Zürich instead of Bregenz (longer and costlier)
- using the Zagreb-Prague portion of Split-Prague RegioJet train (timetables a mess, v costly)
- go via PL and pick up Warsaw-Budapest train (unknown if it'll run)
All are fine for transit, and I will need a PCR test to enter Serbia, that I will get before departing Berlin
Now can I persuade the client in Belgrade to pay that amount? We'll see 😉 And based on what they say I choose a route... go to Belgrade via Bregenz, and back via Budapest maybe?
And the battle for better information - on ticketing and timetables - for train travel in Europe goes on!
This is a sort of counterpart of the well known Berliner #Mauerweg I recently finished - a cycle path that encircles the old West Berlin berlin.de/mauer/en/wall-…
My #GrenzeBerlinOst route follows the border between what was East Berlin and the neighbouring state of Brandenburg
I doubt anyone has tried to cycle this, and it’s definitely not signposted!
In the 2 years since the 2019 EP elections I think the EP has struggled for 5 reasons
1️⃣ The result of the EP election itself - now you need 3 groups for a majority (was 2 before), and the turnover of MEPs was the highest ever - 58% new MEPs
2️⃣ von der Leyen being imposed by the European Council was a hit for the EP. The EPP would sooner have had Weber, or Timmermans or Vestager, than von der Leyen
Pretty much everyone who's not French likes SNCF, as they've been on a TGV whizzing Paris to Marseille. Try getting a regional train between small towns and you will have a different view!
