After 12 yrs the most unlikely parties in Israel - the left, the right & even the handful of Arabs elected to the Israeli Parliament - have banded together to form a “change” coalition, & end what many agree has been bad for the country - a Netanyahu administration. #velshi
7/11
These three sides have literally put country before politics, and that’s a lesson from which we could learn. None have given up their principles, none have made concessions to their ideology, but all decided that enough was enough. #velshi
8/11
They will now work to heal their country’s politics together, as impossible as that task seems. This is a fragile coalition, and it does not solve any of the underlying issues Israel faces. #velshi
9/11
The symbolism of this first step could set the table for meaningful change. Or at least a way forward. #velshi
10/11
So after more than a decade of sowing division - Netanyahu actually managed to bring his country together in an unprecedented way. Ironic. #velshi
11/11
Perhaps good motivation for some Republican members of the U.S. congress to do the same by dumping their own albatross, creating a “coalition of change” with those across the aisle, and to start getting things done for America. #velshi

Israel has a lot of problems right now, but it may be in the process of doing something from which America can learn. Israel has something that Americans will find very familiar. #velshi

A bombastic, divisive leader surrounded by scandal and facing multiple personal legal problems, while battling with the press and squawking about “fake news” and who is desperately trying to hold onto power because that may be his best legal option now. #velshi

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was the Donald Trump of Israel before there ever was a Pres. Donald Trump. For 12 years, Netanyahu has led Israel as if he’s had a mandate, despite falling short in every election & then cutting deals to maintain his office. #velshi

When we went into isolation, we had no idea what we were in for. As we navigated this pandemic, we were beset by, among other things, job loss, isolation, lives disrupted, and lives lost. #velshi

We had no idea how to navigate it, all we knew was that we were in this together. Now, our world is opening, and things are starting to get back to normal. But many of us don't feel “normal” because the pandemic has taken a toll on our mental health. #velshi

Getting back to the “before times” *should* help. Freely socializing without fear. Seeing friends and loved ones who make up our support systems, and not being consumed by questions and concerns about a deadly virus. #velshi

The American Civil War claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history, accounting for more American military deaths than World War 1, World War 2, the Korean War and the War in Afghanistan combined. #velshi

An estimated 620,000 soldiers were killed, requiring the creation of national cemeteries for the first time. By July 1862, just two years after the start of the Civil War, 14 National Cemeteries - Arlington among them - had been established. #velshi

They later became burial places for all U.S. servicemembers. Every year we celebrate Memorial Day in honor of the men and women who have died fighting for this country. United States Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. #velshi

In a small town just outside of Oslo, Norway sits Borregaard Manor. It’s a royal estate, originally built of stone and timber in the Middle Ages by King Olav Haraldsson. A peaceful place, where Norwegian Kings would spend their summers. #velshi

In 1993, it became the site where the most elusive peace in the world was almost achieved. During 14 meetings over a span of 8 months, Israeli officials and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization met under the veil of secrecy. #velshi

They sought to work out a deal that would try to end decades of misunderstanding, mistrust, and bloodshed between their people. It started out as an unofficial meeting between PLO officials and two Israeli professors. #velshi

It’s pretty obvious that as a U.S. politician, you probably shouldn’t insult the military. Military policy, maybe, but not the people who actually defend this country. It’s such an easy landmine to avoid. #velshi

Senator Ted Cruz recently retweeted a video which started out featuring a buff, bald Russian soldier with brute masculinity dripping off him like sweat. #velshi

The video is spliced with this bright animated ad that tells the story of why a female American soldier, raised by two mothers, chose to join the U.S. Army. #velshi

Democracy relies expressly on the ability to form an opinion and express it. Which is why what happened this week to the journalist @nhannahjones is so troubling. #velshi
