#PMaddress, live tweeting and translation:
India affected much as rest of world
Worst pandemic since 100 years
Modern world has not seen or experienced such a crisis
But India has fought back. testing, PPE, labs covid wards, new health infratructue created
Built so many oxygen plants
Never experienced such a demand for oxygen
Oxygen trians, air force planes, navy ships. raised production 10-fold.
have acquired equipment from all over the world.
imported medicines from all over
left no stone unturned
Lots of military references
Covid protocol has been our biggest weapon
vaccines are our greatest #kavach = armour
imagine what would have been the sit if India had not been such a big vaccine producer.
praises last 50-60 years progress in India in vaccine manufacturing capacity.
In 2014 vaccination coverage was ONLY 60% We were very concerned about this. At that rate it would take 40 years to reach 100%. hence we launched Indra Dhanush. we worked in mission mode,
and in just 6 years we raised vacc coverage from 60 to 90%.
We also added several new vaccines because we were concerned about our children esp our poor children. And then the coronavirus came. The world was worried how India would cope and look after so many people
But we coped within a year we launched not one but two MadeIn India vaccines. inside of 1 year. We have given 23 crores doses so far. 23 crores. We need to have self-belief we ahd total self belief in our scientists that they would come good. Even when the trials were ongoing,
we set up a vaccine task force, helped them with funds, aided the company's clinical trial work have them 1000s of crores. So that in the coming days vaccine supplies will only grown. Now we have 7 companuies and 3 other vaccines are in advanced trials.
Even for children 2 vaccines are under trials, research is also on going into a nasal vaccine. if we succeed in this research our vaccine programme will speed up.
This is a greart boost to humanity. Very few countried have even started a vaccination programme.
Only the most advanced countries have. The Central Govt have consulted with CMs and with MPs and we decided that those at greatesst risk would get priority. HCWs, Older people. Imagine if we had not given our front line workers the vaccine before the #Secondwave.
Our health services would have collapsed. Then we began to be asked Why is Only Central Govt is doing everything. health is also a State Subject. Therefore we allowed States more freedom to decide depending on their circumstances. From 16 jan to 30 April, the vacc programme
was run by the Centre. He blames the states for asking freedom to expand the age groups. Why only give older people the vaccine. The media also launmched a campaign against us. Why shd the centre object if States wanted to do their own thing?
He is now justifying the 1 May change in policy. Now they have realised the problems of procuring the vaccine. In may we had expanding risks, vaccine shortages... States now turned round and wanted a reversal of the policy. Therefore the Central Govt also reversed its policy.
Now we have decided that the Centre will take up the responsibility of the 25% that States were responsible for. in Two weeks time. From1 June the Centre will give states vaccines for everyone 18+ and over and give it free of cost to the States.
States will not have to pay nor will people every one over 18 will be entitled to free vaccines. But yes, private purchase of vaccines will be allowed, 25% of vaccine peroduction will be allotted to private sector. with just a 150 Rs service charge allowed.
Now quoting scriptures to justify himself. 130 Crore Indians have worked together to fight Coronavirus. We will raise production and expand the vaccination programme. We are faster than most countries. Many countries have admired our Co-Win app.
We will give states adv notice of how many does they will get and by when. behing every dose is a life saved. It is all our responsibility. But we have taken One more important decision. Last year we gave free rations to 80 crores poor Indian. Now I announce that
This scheme will be extended to Divali. 800 million Indians will get free rations. No one will go hungry, we care for everyone. Ever since India started its vaccine journey, But there have always been the nay-sayers. (I think he refers to the covaxin critics)
The negative voices are playing with the lives of our brothers and sisters. We are wtaching these voices and it is everyone's resp to combat these voices.

India will win against #Coronavirus, thank you.

My #sanghified, #Bhakt-riddled NRI doctors group is an amusing place. In response to my columns on India's vaccine policy reversals some one posted this message aboput how Western Media are always negative aboput India: Image
I put the group right by doing a quick search. I posted a CNN story edition.cnn.com/2021/03/07/eur…

You may have missed this bit of genius:
Under the heading,
Conflict of Interest:, the ICMR/Bharat Biotech team wrote:
"Authors do not have a conflict of interest among themselves."
I comment on this in
science.thewire.in/the-sciences/n…
This is like the story:
6 year old, "Mummy, what is sex?"
Mum (all flustered), "you'll have to ask your dad... why do you want to know?"
6 yr old, "We got this form to fill out and after Name, and Date of Birth ( I can write my name and I know my birthday) it says,
Sex:"
I am taking a screenshot before they twig to it and amend it. Also to defend myself against any accusation that I am making it up. This is from the pdf file here: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Bharat Biotech attacking reports and papers by other researchers is bad form and dangerous for its own good name. They should focus on the integrity of their own research efforts and leave it to independent scientists to critique both their own and others' research.
@BharatBiotech is not in competition with other vaccines. #Covaxin does need to to produce more antibodies than #Covishield to be a successful product. Covaxin needs merely to produce enough of an immune response to be protective against SARS-Cov2.
@BharatBiotech would do better to focus on publishing their much delayed Phase-3 trial data - now promised for July - with genome-sequenced evidence in respect of delta variant. This is not a zero sum game.

Fact-checking the PM's Speech on 7 June 2021.
1. "In past decades India depended on western largesse to get its vaccines. Only after the rich West had met the needs of its population would India start"
This is debunked here: thehindu.com/news/national/…
2. "The coverage in India's vaccination programme in 2014 was a mere 60%." I question this claim in my @newslaundry column here: newslaundry.com/2021/06/08/are…
Specifically, I draw on data presented in a 2016 paper in Bulletin of the World Health Organisation.

I've written a column for @newslaundry on the change in Covid vaccine policy announced by the prime Minister when he addressed the nation at 5 pm yesterday, 7 June.
Look out for it in the morning
Here is my commentary on the vaccine policy reversal. It is welcome, if only a partial, roll-back of a flawed policy. My thanks to @mehrajdlone of @newslaundry
