A thread on how and why you should learn to speed read ๐
๐ฒ Reading is like riding a bike - sometimes you want to enjoy the journey. Other times you just want to get to your destination as quickly as possible. Reading is the same: if the book is good I'll read it slowly and take notes. Otherwise I'll just blitz through it.
๐ Treat book like blog posts - I'm not a big fan of treating books like hallowed objects. If you get like 20% through a book and it's not capturing your attention, it's okay to abandon it.
๐ Reading faster helps to discover gems - if someone recommends a book to me it will take a few hours at most to read. Therefore I discover so many great books as I'll buy (and read) pretty much anything. Speed reading is a really useful skill to have for when you need it.
๐ง Reduce subvocalisation - subvocalisation is basically when we read in our heads. Some say subvocalisation isn't legit, but for me I know I read faster when I reduce the voice in my head when I read. It can be difficult to begin with, but with practice it becomes second nature.
๐ Read the middle - I picked up this tip from @tferriss in The 4-Hour Workweek. The idea is that when we read our eyes move across each line, which is a slow way to read. Tip: you can read quicker by keeping your eye movement more central and reading with your peripheral vision.
๐ Use your pointer - our eyes don't move smoothly across the page when we read, but if they're tracking something (like our finger) they'll move more smoothly. This, in theory, improves reading speed. Although it works best when you're not reading on a screen.
๐ฎ Gamify the experience - normally when I'm reading a good book I'll take my time. But if I get to a point where I'm losing interest in a book or something, I turn it into a game: "how quickly can I read this book while still understanding the gist of it?"
โ๏ธ Write a summary - I've started doing this with all the books I'm reading. And the easiest way to take notes on books is to use @NotionHQ. If I'm feeling particularly keen I will write a summary of the book on my website aliabdaal.com/book-notes/
๐ฌ If you're looking to read faster or need some more convincing it's a great idea, I made a video on this topic that is well worth a watch ๐

The book that changed my relationship with money - 'Your Money or Your Life' by @vicki_robin
Here's what I learnt ๐งต๐
๐ผ Redefining work
We're not really making a living from work. We're making a dying.
In other words, we waste a lot of energy on our jobs in the hope they'll bring us meaning, joy, and happiness. Even though we can get this by spending more time with friends + family.
๐ฐ What is enough?
"Enough is like the horizon - always receding"
We often associate more money with increased levels of fulfilment. But at some stage the more we accumulate the less satisfaction we get - this is the fulfilment curve.
Procrastination is something even the most productive of us have to deal with on a daily basis. Here's a simple formula to end it once and for all.
๐จโ๐ป Action leads to motivation
I used to think you need motivation to get something done, but actually it's the other way around. You get stuff done, and the motivation naturally follows.
As @jeff_haden says: "Motivation is not the cause of action, it is the result of action"
๐ Stop thinking about motivation
Instead of thinking about motivation, I like to think in terms of discipline. When we are disciplined, we will repeat an action enough so it becomes a habit.
Over the past few years Iโve built a system/framework for remembering everything I read and listen to - here are the 5 apps that make it work ๐
๐งโโ๏ธ The magic insight logging framework has 3 layers. 1. Consumption layer - the 3 apps I use to gather information 2. Integration layer - the app I use to bring everything together 3. Second Brain - the app I use to organise my life
Here are 5 quotes from stoicism that changed my life + a few lessons๐
๐ 1. "Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle: some things are within our control and some things are not"
Lesson - I don't set numerical goals in life as I can't control the result. Instead I focus on what is in my control: the process.
โ๏ธ 2. "It is not events that disturb people, it is their judgements concerning them"
Lesson - we often think negative emotions are caused by external events. But it's actually the story we tell ourselves about the event that makes us feel bad.
These days itโs pretty much impossible to quit your phone. We rely on so many apps in our day-to-day lives.
Hereโs a full list of my favourite iPhone apps that I use pretty much every day ๐
๐ @audible_com - one of the best $7.95/month that I spend on anything. Whenever Iโm driving the car, cleaning the house, or getting ready for bed, I listen to audiobooks on 2x speed. Very easy way to use time more productively and make each of these activities more enjoyable.
๐ค @JoinClubhouse - if Iโm bringing my phone to bed with me I usually end up talking to my US friends and YouTubers over on Clubhouse. Sort-of like Discord audio rooms with conversations on all sorts of topics. Follow me @AliAbdaal.
Starting a YouTube channel is the single best thing I've ever done in my life.
Here are my top 10 tips on how to get started on YouTube ๐
๐ 1. Don't worry about what other people will say - the number one fear people have is always the same: "I'm worried about what my friends and family will think." The truth is, everyone's too worried about their own lives to care what youโre doing.
๐ท2. Gear doesn't matter at the start - when I started my channel I filmed everything on my iPhone and only bought fancy gear when I decided to take YouTube more seriously. It's like when you're learning to write: it doesn't matter what pen you use as long as you write something.
