Breaking news: Biden's DOJ will continue to defend Trump in the defamation case that accuses him of raping journalist E. Jean Carroll.

It argues Trump should get immunity... and taxpayers should pick up the tab.

thedailybeast.com/biden-doj-will…
The Justice Department is trying to walk a fine line here. Right up at the top of its filing tonight, it draws this distinction.
But throughout its brief, the DOJ reiterates that Trump was very much doing his job when he essentially called E. Jean Carroll a liar.
This goes to the heard of the current DOJ position here. If the government won't defend Trump... then maybe it won't defend other federal employees too.
This is legalese for: Even if Trump lied about raping someone... and tarnished his victim's reputation by claiming she lied about the whole thing... he's protected.
Again, the DOJ is distancing itself from Trump's behavior. But it's still taking the stance that he's entitled to a massive, trillion-dollar shield.

The immunity and profound legal resources of the United States of America.

Some folks are surprised at the level of detail in our exposés on Matt Gaetz & crew.

I'll use the latest story @SollenbergerRC & I did together as an example.

Time for a thread!

We first heard about "Big Joe" in late March, when @ktbenner broke the story on the DOJ investigating Gaetz.

We immediately started reaching out. Surely, Gaetz's wingman's bestie knows something right?
Multiple sources confirmed that yes, "Big Joe" tagged along with Gaetz's buddy for years. They cohosted a radio show, partied together, and even worked together.

We've spoken to maybe a dozen people who knew them personally.

But how far did this go?

Breaking news: Federal judge shuts down NYC police unions' attempt to block public release of misconduct records.
Judge Polk says unions failed to show that publishing records of discipline would cause irreparable harm to officers' reputation or safety.
Judge was swayed by a simple argument: How much harm could there be if 16 other states already make this kind of info public?

(This is a common theme in 2020, as New York finally joins other states w/ DA sharing of exculpatory evidence & bail reform.)

(THREAD)

Two years ago last week, a government-funded shelter for undocumented immigrant kids discovered that one of its staff members sexually abused a child.

This was never made public.

We just exposed it.

The crime and the subsequent investigation all proceeded in secret. Documents related to this incident are marked “CONFIDENTIAL.”

I know this, because I have them.

My journey started at the federal courthouse in May. I discovered a case in which an undocumented kid was begging to be freed by the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

In the lawsuit, it mentions that the boy was sexually assaulted at the MercyFirst shelter on July 1, 2017.

Sitting in a nearly empty immigration court on Tuesday, the judge called the next case. In walks a 4-year-old Honduran girl, her hair in a dozen braids each with a black bow. She refused to sit in the chair.

She preferred to sit next to me in the back.

The translator leaned over, telling her about upcoming court dates & the importance of attending -- or being subject to a deportation order in absentia.

Of course this little darling had no idea what was going on. She blew raspberries my way & giggled the whole time.

The first time she responded to the judge was when she asked her age. The girl raised her right hand and four little fingers, then looked at me and smiled.

"Wow," I whispered to her. "Tienes cuatro años?"

She nodded, and all the bows swung in the air.

"Si!"
