The 10 cheap purchases that have massively improved my quality of life - a thread πŸ‘‡
⏰ Physical alarm clock - I used to use my phone as an alarm clock, but I'd inevitably spend hours on Twitter or @Hinge when I should have been sleeping. Since I bought a physical alarm clock, and placed my phone across the room, my quality of sleep has massively improved.
🦷 Electric toothbrush - needs to have a 30 second timer as that's how long you should spend brushing each quadrant of the mouth (2 mins in total). I've been using one for a year and I've noticed a massive improvement in the whiteness of my smile. @taimurabdaal noticed too lol.
🎸 Ukulele - I started learning the ukulele when I was in my 2nd year of medical school. I learned by following YouTube tutorials and within a few days I could play songs and sing along. It's really fun. And it was my gateway drug into the world of music.
πŸ“ @pukkapads - I've tried zillions of writing pads over the years and always come back to the Pukka Pad. The quality, feel, and look is second to none. I use it to plan my book, scribble to-do lists, and write down my thoughts. I highly recommend it.
πŸ“š The @AustinKleon trilogy - these are really good and I keep them on my desk at all times. I always find inspiration from them. The books are 'Show Your Work' (this is the book that's probably most changed my life), 'Steal Like an Artist', and 'Keep Going'.
πŸ’§ Water bottle - I drink so much more water now I have a water bottle sitting on my desk at all times. I've also noticed that I feel less bloated and my skin feels like it's glowing when I drink more water. Not sure how much of that is placebo, but yeah it works for me.
πŸƒ Deck of cards - magic started off as a way to increase my sexual market value lol, but when I got to uni I used magic to perform at events + make some money. This gave me more confidence to put myself out there. Check out my video on hobbies πŸ‘‰
πŸ“± @AmazonKindle - this is probably the one item that's most impacted my life because it gives you the ability to read infinitely more books. Anytime I get a book recommendation I just buy it on Kindle immediately and start reading it straight away.
πŸšͺ Doorstop - when I was at university I always used to have a doorstop to keep my door open. Doing this helps people to know that it's okay for them to interrupt you while you're working and it's just generally good vibes all around.
πŸ’» Subscription to @Skillshare - this is an incredible online platform with thousands of online classes on all sorts of topics. I've got some classes too, which hopefully you find useful. It's an absolute no brainer for all the value that you get.
🎬 If you want to quickly improve your quality of life definitely think about buying some of these items. If you're still not sure then check out the full video πŸ‘‰

A thread on how and why you should learn to speed read πŸ‘‡
🚲 Reading is like riding a bike - sometimes you want to enjoy the journey. Other times you just want to get to your destination as quickly as possible. Reading is the same: if the book is good I'll read it slowly and take notes. Otherwise I'll just blitz through it.
πŸ“š Treat book like blog posts - I'm not a big fan of treating books like hallowed objects. If you get like 20% through a book and it's not capturing your attention, it's okay to abandon it.

The book that changed my relationship with money - 'Your Money or Your Life' by @vicki_robin

Here's what I learnt πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡
πŸ’Ό Redefining work

We're not really making a living from work. We're making a dying.

In other words, we waste a lot of energy on our jobs in the hope they'll bring us meaning, joy, and happiness. Even though we can get this by spending more time with friends + family.
πŸ’° What is enough?

"Enough is like the horizon - always receding"

We often associate more money with increased levels of fulfilment. But at some stage the more we accumulate the less satisfaction we get - this is the fulfilment curve.

How to stop procrastinating 🧡

Procrastination is something even the most productive of us have to deal with on a daily basis. Here's a simple formula to end it once and for all.
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» Action leads to motivation
I used to think you need motivation to get something done, but actually it's the other way around. You get stuff done, and the motivation naturally follows.

As @jeff_haden says: "Motivation is not the cause of action, it is the result of action"
πŸ›‘ Stop thinking about motivation

Instead of thinking about motivation, I like to think in terms of discipline. When we are disciplined, we will repeat an action enough so it becomes a habit.

We don't need motivation when it's a habit.

Over the past few years I’ve built a system/framework for remembering everything I read and listen to - here are the 5 apps that make it work πŸ‘‡
πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈ The magic insight logging framework has 3 layers.
1. Consumption layer - the 3 apps I use to gather information
2. Integration layer - the app I use to bring everything together
3. Second Brain - the app I use to organise my life
πŸ“š 1. @AmazonKindle (consumption)

I've been reading books on Kindle since 2008. As you read you can highlight stuff across any of your devices, which is pretty fantastic.

Here are 5 quotes from stoicism that changed my life + a few lessonsπŸ‘‡
😁 1. "Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle: some things are within our control and some things are not"

Lesson - I don't set numerical goals in life as I can't control the result. Instead I focus on what is in my control: the process.
βš–οΈ 2. "It is not events that disturb people, it is their judgements concerning them"

Lesson - we often think negative emotions are caused by external events. But it's actually the story we tell ourselves about the event that makes us feel bad.

These days it’s pretty much impossible to quit your phone. We rely on so many apps in our day-to-day lives.

Here’s a full list of my favourite iPhone apps that I use pretty much every day πŸ‘‡
πŸ“— @audible_com - one of the best $7.95/month that I spend on anything. Whenever I’m driving the car, cleaning the house, or getting ready for bed, I listen to audiobooks on 2x speed. Very easy way to use time more productively and make each of these activities more enjoyable.
🎀 @JoinClubhouse - if I’m bringing my phone to bed with me I usually end up talking to my US friends and YouTubers over on Clubhouse. Sort-of like Discord audio rooms with conversations on all sorts of topics. Follow me @AliAbdaal.
