A thread on the snippets (paragraphs & quotes) from the book ‘The Epigenetics Revolution’ by Nessa Carey

All your cells (200 types) in your body have the same DNA, so how does a brain cell differs from a blood cell?

This thread will be updated as I read further & further. Image
1/ Your DNA is the script & the two different movies are the cells.

The Epigenome is the one culprit. This is the one who interprets a DNA code as per it’s need.

: Listen this amazing Explanation. Image
2/ “Invert, always invert” ~ Charlie Munger.

This is what he means by that quote. Try to view a same problem from multiple lens. Image
3/ The scientific explanation. ImageImage
4/ The miraculous piece of work that is the human body. Image
5/ This is what the now Wolf prize winner & the Nobel Laureate, John Gurdon was told in school.

Now Listen to this Poem by Charles Bukowski: & think. Image
6/ “To see what everyone else has seen but to think what nobody else has thought.”

Best definition of a great scientist.
7/ The best scientific experiments are designed to disprove, not to prove an idea.

Same should be applied in making a stock investment. Image
8/ “Sometimes the greatest scientific breakthroughs happen because someone ignores the prevailing pessimism.”

Replace scientific breakthroughs with investments & it’s valid.
9/ Simplest explanation of DNA. Image
10/ Why even a single mutation in DNA can have devastating effects. Image
11/ The science behind developing an alcohol tolerance. Image
12/ Fascinating. Image
13/ The obesity pandemic that we are currently facing will have reverberations over the next generations 😤 Image
14/ The Battle of the sexes. Image
15/ Just wow. ImageImage
16/ How new theories take over old theories in science. Same is valid in Investing. Image
17/ What we find depends depends very much on how we are looking. Image
18/ Biologically speaking, this explains why we derive from Chimpanzees.

Humans & chimps split just 40 lakh years ago (small time, evolutionarily) Image
19/ Some part of us is actually, perfect the way it is: Proteins.

How does biology codes for more complex & sophisticated organisms? By altering the regulations of these proteins, not altering the proteins themselves. Image
20/ Scientist who discovered the Si-RNA technology receives a Nobel Prize.

A book in 2012 talks about the various risks involved in drugs using that tech👇

2018- FDA Approves First-Ever siRNA Therapy (an orphan drug)

Another reason to be optimistic. Image
21/ The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not ‘Eureka!’ (I found it!) but ‘That’s funny ....’ ~ Isaac Asimov.
22/ Cancer is heterogeneous. ImageImage
23/ Depression & it’s complexity. Image
24/ The growth of the cosmetic industry to fight ageing has been relentless. Image
25/ Simplest way to live longer. Image
26/ Nature is smarter than people think. ~Mickey, the movie ‘Rocky V’ Image
27/ Butterfly 🦋 = caterpillar 🐛 Image
28/ I like such endings, not tipsy for the sake of it, real.

Overall, a must read for the geneticist 🧬 inside you. However, A bit dry at times.

End of Thread. Image

Niranjan Hiranandani's view of how different real estate asset classes will go through in this cycle?

A micro thread 🧵👇
1/ Residential housing: The finished products are going to sell best all across India.

Location remains the most important factor, others are pricing, sizing of the flats & amenities asked by the residents.

The last 2 have benefitted immensely due to the Work from Home Trend.
2/ Commercial Projects are facing a big setback & should continue facing one for a year or two.

However, one who invests in them now will create High ROI long-term assets.

Tier 2 & 3 cities are seeing increased demand for commercial real estate: Mostly small & medium format.

Commodity Supercycles.

Hit the 're-tweet' & help us educate more investors.

A micro thread 🧵👇
1/ What is a commodity supercycle?

They are near decade long periods where commodities trade well above their price trend

supercycles are rare

Going back 100 years, Only 3-4 supercycles have been identified & each was tied to a transformational period of economic development.
2/ A one-two year rally in commodity prices is NOT a supercycle, rather could just a rebound from an imp. event as what even happened after the 2008 great recession.

Interesting snippets from the shareholder letters by Mr Deepak Parekh, HDFC from FY12-20

To equity Investors: India is not a ‘top- down story; it never was & perhaps never will be

India is a ‘micro’ story

Companies underestand: Risk of not being in India> Risk of being.
2/n

The mindset behind their lending: Hats off.

Also adds, that as India’s mortgage penetration is so low, insincere lenders tend to gain market share during great times.

For HDFC, Profitability is the focus, not market share.
