Surveillance is a matter of life & death in Myanmar. What role did European companies & EU funds play in providing the military junta with the spy tech it used to counter mass protest against the coup it staged
About the consequences of being tracked in #Myanmar, one former detainee told us: ‘There were detainees from the student unions, they were taken away with black hoods over their heads and they didn’t come back’
The #Myanmar military capacity to track its compatriots has been enhanced by EU companies & EU subsidies. Firms like swedish #MSAB and Italian SecurCube appear in leaked Myanmar ministerial budget documents we obtained
The deals took place prior to the coup but at a time when #Myanmar was still largely controlled by a military, widely condemned for an ongoing genocide on the #Rohingya & known for its suppression of activists and journalists
So when the generals staged their coup on Feb 1, and mass protests spread throughout Myanmar, 100,000s demonstrators feared they were facing a military with highly enhanced tech capabilities
A violent crackdown followed, with 800+ protesters killed, 1000s injured & political prisoners brutally tortured. Internet was restricted, Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter & Instagram blocked & smartphone data used as evidence in arrests
In @LHreports#SurveillanceNewsroom we unpack a horrifying example of how weak EU regulation & oversight enabled vendors of forensic and surveillance equipment to do business with a pariah regime
With @theintercept we uncover the EU funding involved. MSAB & others received millions from the EU’s flagship tech research program #HorizonEurope, previously known as Horizon2020 for their project: FORMOBILE
MSABs products were confirmed to be sold to Myanmar's police -- effectively part of the Tatmadaw (military) & can quickly scan & analyze all of the data on a smartphone
Forensic researcher & coordinator of the FORMOBILE project Christian Hummert told @CaitLChandler and @notzachcampbell that the majority of deliverables from that project would feed directly into MSAB’s products
With @irpinvestigates and the Italian newspaper @DomaniGiornale we find out how it was possible that exports continued when an embargo was in place explicitly targeting military end-use & risks of internal repression?
The piece demonstrates how Myanmar quickly became a new market when in 2011 a democratic transition of power was agreed. But the military never really ceded power & companies turned a blind eye to the military connections of their business partners.
‘We know from previous cases that when authoritarian regimes get their hands on these technologies they use them to enable further human rights abuses,' Scott-Railton of @citizenlabco told Domani’s @ORARiccardo
The @globeandmail with @nvanderklippe zooms in on Canadian firms Magnet Forensics and OpenText Corporation both based in Canada’s tech hub of Kitchener-Waterloo
Europe’s border agency #Frontex not only ignored human rights abuses, its director asked his employees to cover them up & delete evidence, a report by the European Parliament concludes.
The report builds upon investigations done by @LHreports and partners spiegel.de/ausland/geflue…
With our partners @dwnews@trouw@bellingcat@guardian we showed in April last year how asylum seekers in Greece on the mainland & islands were forced back to Turkey, denied the right claim asylum. These pushback operations are against international law. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
We also proved in cooperation with @DerSpiegel@reportmainz@guardian that the Greek coastguard puts asylum seekers, who already arrived on the islands on life rafts and left them adrift in Turkish waters. swr.de/report/brutale…
THREAD: How is one of Europe's most famous companies helping Turkey sustaining an airbridge between Turkey and Libya, despite a UN arms embargo? #A400M#EUarms#Airbus
We analysed flight radar data and confirmed at least 11 flights with Turkish’ A400Ms between Turkey and Libya in the period between June 24 and August 21.
France, Germany & Italy are threatening sanctions against those violating the UN embargo for Libya. But #Airbus is providing critical services to the Turkish A400M fleet, enabling it to likely breach that same embargo.
THREAD: Early March 1000s of asylum seekers were funneled to the TR border with GR at Evros. They've been called "invaders" & even “biological weapons”.
Who were the people at the fence?
What happened to them?
Where are they now?
After Covid erupted & Turkey burned down their shelters & bussed them out of #Pazarkule, we followed. For a month we tracked 30 people from quarantine camps nr Syria to the Aegean coast & prison in Ankara.
Many came from Syria. Like Ibrahim (41) who tried to reach his wife and 3 kids in Germany. Or Rima (45), who was a nurse in Daraa, covered the impact of the war on video and is therefore seen as an anti-regime activist.
THREAD A month ago this video 👇 went viral. Migrants were said to be deliberately harming children to win sympathy. We analysed the video, rebutted the false claim & confronted media spreading it.
First up, how do we know it's been a false claim? This video explains:
Our analysis confirms the location: Pazarkule border crossing between Turkey-Greece. The video is shot on a day that Greek and Turkish police fired teargas at migrants
NEWS In this video we will show that France granted a license for armored vehicles (the Bastion, made by Acmat) to Cameroon, despite widely reported human rights violations by their army. And we will reveal where they were used.
Since 2009 Boko Haram terrorizes the north of Cameroon, Chad and Nigeria. The Rapid Intervention Forces (BIR) of the Cameroon army were sent to protect the population. But they are also caught committing grave human rights violations.
Amnesty International wrote in 2015 how the BIR randomly arrested civilians, and how they tortured and killed them.
